Translation: The Pats turned down Coles for Branch and Mangini is doing damage control in case something leaks, which given the tit-for-tat relationship between the clubs is likely to happen.
Oh wow, Deion Branch's 1 superbowl obliterates Coles 0(sarcasm). You make it seem like Branch is a 3 time MVP or something. Coles hasnt been to a superbowl so it isnt a fair comparison, and the only reason why Branch has been to 3 is because a guy named Tom Brady and a coach named Bill Belicheck. Dont make it seem like Deion Branch is Jerry Rice now. Lets compare what theyve done in the regular season(and im only comparing what they done in the same season seeing how Coles has played longer). 2002: Branch - 43 rec 489 yds 2 tds Coles - 89 rec 1264 yds 5 tds 2003: Branch - 57 rec 803 yds 3 tds Coles - 82 rec 1204 yds 6 tds 2004: Branch(through 9 games) - 35 rec 454 yds 4 tds Coles (heres Coles stats thru the same 9 games to make it comparable) - 54 rec 505 yds 0 tds 2005: Branch - 78 rec 998 yds 5 tds Coles - 73 rec 845 yds 5 tds Totals: Branch - 213 rec 2744 yds 14 tds Coles - 298 rec 3818 yds 16 tds Call me crazy but Deion Branch doesnt seem more productive than Coles, and Coles isnt the product of a system like Branch is. Branch has had Tom Brady throwing to him his entire career where as Coles has had Vinny Testaverde, Ray Lucas, Chad Pennington, Patrick Ramsey, Tim Hasselbeck, Mark Brunell, and Brooks Bollinger throwing to him.
Quote me once where I said I want to "hand the #1 position" to anyone. I just want a #1 WR. Coles is not the guy. He'd be a great #2 and I'd love to keep him. I want to FO to bring in some new blood, whether it's Branch, Rogers, Porter, or Watts. I want someone to challenge Coles, and if need be, beat him out of the job.
No, fool, hijacking threads that have nothing to do with Penny, only to spout off nonsense about Penny brings out terms such as "ignorant" or "clown".
Wait a second, let's be fair here: 2000 Coles: 22 rec, 370 yds, 1td 2002 Branch: 43 rec, 489 yds, 2td 2001 Coles: 59 rec, 868 yds, 7td 2003 Branch: 57 rec, 803 yds, 3td 2002 Coles: 89 rec, 1264 yds, 5td 2004 Branch: 35 rec, 454 yds, 4td 2003 Coles: 82 rec, 1204 yds, 6td 2005 Branch: 78, 998 yds, 5td 2004 Coles: 90 rec, 950 yds, 1td 2005 Coles: 73 rec, 845 yds, 5td So up through 2003 nobody in their right mind would be trading Coles for Branch. However given the reality of Cole's performance over the last two years who exactly do we expect to have a better season this year? My money is on Branch if he plays.
Even when u compare it like that, Coles is still the more productive receiver. Also, Coles makes the tough catches. Branch had Tom Brady and Coles had everyone else. In a terrible season last year with no QB or o-line, Coles only had 153 less yards than Branch who had his best season last year. Coles in one of his worst seasons was on par with Branch in his best season. Add on the fact that Coles will make any catch on the field regardless of whos gonna smash him, i'll take Coles anyday over a guy Tom Brady makes look good.
Shouldn't the comparisons being made be Branch vs> McCariens and Cotchery? Coles is a possession reciever, Branch is a deep threat, something we dont have, if one forgets about our rookie WR/RB/QB, Smith.. This entire "trade Coles" stuff is pure BS.... planted by the best BS farmer in the media.... John (the bbokworm) Clayton. I'd love to smack that little twerp. Backhanded, of course.
if you are going to be crticial of pennington...you better be able to back it up with some argument of substance rather then calling him noodle arm....hey mnjetfan...wheres patrick ramsey now??? thats right!!! not starting!!! ahhh the subject of my sig....
Coles has been just as productive or more productive than Branch if you look at stats. Stats however don't always tell the story. My own eyes told me Coles who I watched develop in 02 was turning into a great WR. I was thrilled with the Moss for Coles trade because Moss wasn't nearly the WR Coles was from observation of performance. With Brunell for 9 games and Ramsey for 7 games in a system where the No. 1WR is suppossed to be a downfield threat Coles had 90 receptions for under 1,000 yards and 1TD. Moss had 84 receptions for 1483 yards and 9 TD's in the same system. In that same system the RB with Moss was much more successful than with Coles who couldn't stretch the field. I believe Cotch can be a successful possession WR. Mangini clearly wants to run the ball and stretch the field with downfield passing. He can't with the current group of WR. He can only stretch the field with Smith who isn't going to get that much time since we probably need to run a two TE set or at least have a FB more than we can run multiple WR sets until the line Gells. I think they don't believe Coles can get down field anymore with enough seperation for Pennington to comfortable float the ball out to him. That's why they would trade him for Branch not because Branch is better but because he is more of a stretch the field guy and he can create downfield seperation.
Good thing the old regime is gone because imagine the fallout. We lose Coles to DC. We then trade our fastest WR (who was a much ballyhooed #1 DP) to DC for Coles. Now we're thinking about moving Coles again thereby losing what could have been a great 1-2 punch at WR. I have to think though that Mangini's denial is damage control. If the right deal comes along, Coles is a goner. Dissention can't be tolerated by the new Regime in any form. Guys can gripe, but they'd better do it privately. In my mind, that's makes the case for a Coles' trade quite plausible..
All this "Oh the Moss trade looks bad now."... Please tell me, someone, anyone...With 4 different QB's in last years dismal offense...Please tell me the numbers Santana would of put up, I would love to hear it.
