I didnt say you can plug in any bum at center. What I meant, was that its alot easier to find a center capable of starting and still get competant prodcution, which is opposite the case of a 3-4 DE
I think all you guys are in left field sorry to say. I think what Petro is saying is that it is a typical NYJ thing which is why we have been failures for so long cause of signings like him thru the years.
I would agree with that sentiment if we were looking at this as a long term solution. I don't think you can compare this signing to the "failures" we've aquired in the past.
Theres nothing to criticize with the signing. It was not only a good signing, it was a necessary signing. Name me another 3-4 DE on the market...
mawae led a mutiny against groh. there's no way any tuna-coach would touch him. as for kimo, he's a hold-the-fort guy.
why the hell are we signing old players if where re-building. Damn we have a front that don't know what there doing. I see some bad years ahead of us.
Okay then...all that oppose the signing...Name another 3-4 end on the market. There were none. So then riddle me this, how do you switch to a 3-4, when you dont have the personnel to do it?
You are joking right..The guy will fit in perfect with the 3-4 ..His 3 year is most likely a 2 ..You can't go out and pick 20 year olds to jump on a team..You have to have a mixture of age=experience and youth=sponges to soak up that knowledge..You draft someone to take his slot deep in the draft and nurture him to be the succesor.
The Steelers had 2 DE's to choose from...Kimo...or Brett Kiesel. Kiesel is younger...and has more career/upside ahead of him. Having said that..Kimo still has some solid years ahead of him. And I was glad to see he at least went to a team I respect. Kimo is underrated because the 3-4 doesn't feature the Ends. He's a very solid player that will help you guys through your rebuilding.
I love this perception that our whole defense is rebuilding. We still have a talented, young defense. von Oelhoffen is now the only player on defense over 30. Ellis is under 30. Robertson is under 30. Barton is under 30. Vilma is under 30. Hobson is under 30. Barrett is under 30. Miller is under 30. Coleman is under 30. Rhodes is under 30. Bryan Thomas is under 30. Andre Maddox is under 30. Matt Chatham is under 30. Derrick Strait is under 30. Rashaad Washington is under 30. Darrell McClover is under 30. Sione Pouha is under 30. James Reed is under 30. It was my understanding that the offense was the place that was getting a complete makeover. The defense just needed to add a few veterans who know how to run multiple fronts, especially the 3-4. If your whole argument is "well, he's too old", how many teams in the NFL do you think have absolutely no players on defense over 30? von Oelhoffen is now the only one here who is over that age. Bottom line, this was a good signing. A veteran who has a lot of experience in Mangini's style of defense is a positive. We have a young defense, adding ONE older veteran who is still effectively, and who knows the system and will add leadership, and help other players adapt to this system is not a bad move at all. Infact, it is a very good move.
While your statement is accurate and dead on it isn't the fact that we signed a 30+ yr old to the defense and it's gonna kill us it's the fact that we signed a 30+ yr old period.. and to add insult just like you eluded to, our defensive personnel isn't the problem right now so why the hell are we signing 30+ yr old 3-4 DE's? We have other issues.
isn't it funny how no one can name any 3-4 DE's better to sign than Kimo? you have to bring in someone to buy time for the eventual starting DE to learn. Even if we don't get a young, future 3-4 DE this year, next year Kimo will still be here when we draft one. cheers
We have a very young defense that has almost NO experience running the type of defense Mangini will look to implement. von Oelhoffen is a high character veteran who has a lot of experience in it.
I've been trying to describe him to my less football-savvy friends. "Who the hell is that?" "Hrmm... Well he's the guy that broke Carson Palmer" "ooooooooh!"
