Kiper: 3 Overall Jets select a dlineman

Discussion in 'Draft' started by AJT73, Jan 18, 2019.

  1. Hes not a top 5 tackle..physically hes not top 10 but his track record could play a part.

He may struggle w speed rushers at the next level.Id venture to say that one of the reasons you take a tackle top 3 is he can handle any type of pass rusher no more important than a speed guy.

Average rankings base off preseason rankings. As more people watch the further he has fallen.

  3. Quinnon Williams scares me at 3 bc I'd like to see another year of similar production from him. I'm not questioning that he's been dominant at the collegiate level but there are parts of his game that leave me wanting to see more before picking this guy top 3. Interior DL is one of the hardest evaluations in football. We can't ignore the past w. the likes of D rob,Wilkerson,Sheldon & now Leo. We can't just focus in on the play making & ignore other aspects of the position b.c as we've learned you can't gloss over portions of a DL prospect's game.

With that said my concerns stem from the fact that he is extremely dependent on his ability to shed blocks. He has a few different moves that highlight his flexibility/agility/burst & he executes them on an unreal level. HOWEVER, those 5-8 reps per game when his moves don't immediately yield penetration/separation he is pretty well neutralized. You'd like to see a DL still be able to get penetration, collapse the pocket & keep their lane integrity when they aren't able to disengage; Towing the line,if you will.I have concerns about that portion.Even against the run folks are saying he's a dominant run defender..and yeah when he disengages he blows everything up. But when his moves don't work..is his anchor & lane integrity anything special? I don't see it.

To be fair he's just a baby physically & will absolutely get stronger so it's possible his anchor & bullrushing ability will ascend. But I need to see more. This brings up questions of if he can play in both a 1 OR a 2 gap. 1 gap b.c you must be able to get penetration/collapse the pocket at all costs. If your moves don't get you there you better damn will bull that guard's outside shoulder & at least make the QB step up. 2 gap b.c I'm not yet sold on him being able to "Tow the line" as alluded to above. It's a read & react scheme that demands lane integrity & anchoring first before disengaging.

NFL OL know how to handle different moves no matter how crafty they may seem. His moves working at the Pro level or hell even after a whole offseason for college OL coaches to hone in on his tape are not a sure thing. If his moves don't work at the pro level what does he become? A pretty average player at this stage. Now if his moves work even at 50% deduction of what they are now & he's got a better anchor/bull rush than I'm giving him credit? He's literally the end of Tom Brady. The free shots he gets at the backfield..it won't matter. Offenses wont be able to get off the ground; W. threats at the 3 other DL spots of course.

Reason I like Ed Oliver better is b.c he has a larger body of work, is much more athletic, has acouple good moves in his own right, doesn't have an 1/8th of the surrounding cast Williams does & tows the line exceptionally well. Is he the playmaker Williams is? Impossible to say w.o forcing the 2 to trade college Uniforms for acouple games. But to be fair I'll give the nod to Williams at this stage w. some skepticism attached.

Do you think he was dominant in the Alabama Big Games ? I didn't....didn't hear his name at all in the Clemson game.

The WORST NFL OL is going to be better than the BEST Clemsnon OL'er.

Agreed.....but this guy to me, against the best teams, looks average at best. Late 1st Round or 2nd Round.

Bingo....this is what I saw in the Georgia game for the most part and especially in the Clemson game. Lawrence had all day to throw. Their running game wasn't bad, either.

What makes you think this guy is a baby and he'll get stronger and/or bigger ? He's 21, not 19. You may be right, but how do we know this isn't a bigger version of Vernon Ghoulston ?

If he couldn't blow up the Georgia or Clemson OL's, what makes us think he can do that against the Patriots and Steelers ?

His moves didn't work against the better teams in college, that is what scares me.

I love Alabama and Saban, but the truth is going back years/decades....Alabama defensive players tend to have a very high BUST rate written on them. I'll never forget how lucky we were drafting Marty Lyons in 1979 instead of his teammate, Barry Kraus (who went much higher).

I have to do more work on Oliver. This could be the guy who has the BOOM-or-BUST label on him even more than Williams. Difference being that guy was said to be Top 10'ish while Williams was seen as Top 5 or Top 3.
