Not really a surprise as Ryan does not play a true 3-4 but rather the same type of 3-4 that Dallas and San Diego run.
Dallas is running a 1-Gap 34, that?s a pretty differnt system from every other 34-team in the league right now. And SD is running a pretty basic 34. The Rex Ryan system is most simular to the Steeler?s system, but Rex is even more trying to confuse and surprise the opponent, a lot of zone blitzes, overloads, players shifting around an all the stuff, mangini never had the guts to do on a regular basis.
I don't think they would move him to DE. Just double up inside and let him see some single blocking That should help his stamina considerably.
Stop and think. Ryan did run 4 man fronts last year and will most likely do it again this year. We eill see a lot more looks out of this D then what mangini brought. I'm not sure every one will produce or or handle thier job correctly, but we will see true 4-3 mixed in with the 3-4 this year. We will see D linemen drop into coverage and we will seee all out 7 man blitzes. Mass confusion is the Rayn defensive MO.
It makes tons of sense, because Jenkins is essentially the size of an offensive tackle. There is a misconception in the media and often on this board of the role of a defensive end in this 3-4 system. The defensive end is supposed to anchor the edge and assure the gaps for the blitzers, wherever they may be coming from. There are exceptions in a 3-4(Marques Douglas is practically the standard bearer) but the primary focus is holding at the point and occupying blockers AT ALL SPOTS. While it is an asset to have a guy with pass rush upside at the position, it is not particularly a necessity. Jenkins is athletic enough to excel at either spot and I wouldn't be opposed to spending a high pick on a starting quality nose tackle and rotating him out more often. -X-
