I see Clowney is now fourth on your depth chart. Just last off season, he was the favorite by the majority on this board to be the #2 in this offense. What a difference a year makes.
This was effectively Clowney's first season, now people got to see what hes really made of, and how he performs in the nfl. And its obvious hes not very good at somethings
Those somethings he's not good at would be running a sharp route. Speed is nice, route running is more important. That's why Cotch is a very talented WR and Clowney is inactive most of the time.
yeah something is wrong with his head but we have known that since he started tweeting. it just sucks that he has such good hands but is still basically worthless.
if he stopped tweeting and worked with Ellard on how to sell routes he might just fit in to the offense on a weekly basis.
The only thing David Clowney is good for based on what we saw last year is stretching the field. Even then he only draws one defender. I just don't see him as worth all that much in the kind of scheme the Jets are likely to be running over the next few years. What the Jets need is a real slot receiver or a solid route runner outside who would let Cotchery move into the slot in 3 WR sets. The skills that Clowney has would be more valuable in a run and shoot type attack where the Jets were consistently flooding the deep zone with targets and asking Sanchez to find the open man downfield. That's not the offense they are running.
I like having Clowney on this team... just not as a #3 WR... the only thing he's good at is running downfield fast and having reliable hands in the process. That is a valuable skill but if you can't run routes than you are only a situational player... ergo a #4 WR on the depth chart. Considering right now we are a run first team so I'm ok with our #5 (B. Smith) and #6 (W. Smith) being primarily ST7wildcat guys all we need is to find a true #3 WR whereever he comes from between RFA, UFA, draft, TC whatever... I really hope Britt Davis can step it up this year... plus don't forget A. Allison... like Clowney he is primarily a down-field guy but unlike him he can be a factor in the punt returning game too. When talking about fringe players it's important to talk about how well they can contribute on ST.
