That is exactly what the TV host was saying. In fact he was implying that by making him a read/react player that we would also be taking him down the road to busthood. Maybe it is time to change the D to take advantage of the skills that the D players have. If he does not turn into public enemy #1 by week 2 when he should be whacking the heck out of TB why did we even draft him in the 1st place?
It's amazing how Cimini will discount a reception for an official's mistake in a preseason game but won't say shit about a bad call like that Baker TD pushout in a regular season game. Rich Cimini can blow me.
Felt a bit sorry for Clemens, if his confidence isn't completly shot by now, I think that game will do it. There were some bad drops in this game and annoyingly no stuckey, who played well in the first game. I really liked Jenkins as Cimini said, he tied up two blockers. Also he held his ground, which is all you need from him to be a massive improvement from last year. I don't remember seeing Pouha out there, who had a great first game.
I think you hit it on the head here. IMO, Gholston is useless to this defense until he masters the entire 3-4 OLB package, which includes a great deal of coverage responsibilities. I've seen many posters state that we can just use him as a situational pass rusher this year until he gets up to speed, I don't see how that can work. If every time he is in the game he will be the rush backer, than the likes of Brady, Pennington and such will be licking their chops knowing where the blitz is coming from. Gholston has to be able to play the entire position to be successful and I think the coaching staff realizes this. They know he can rush the passer so we are going to be seeing him do all the other stuff in these preseason games trying to get up to speed...
Clemens got hosed by bad recieving and so did Ratliff. I'm sure when evaluated those will be counted as completions. But it would be nice to Clemens go the distance. As far as Gholston? ............. He's still swimming.
im more worried about the O line depth then the drops....if one of these guys goes down... its gonna get ugly again....
I noticed they put him at DE when we had 4 down linemen in the nickel/dime packages against the skins. That's one way to use him as a situational pass rusher that he should be comfortable with and that doesn't tip the offense off as to what the defense is going to be.
Bryan Thomas supposedly has great speed and the guy plays as slow as any OLB in the league. It could be we can't judge talent or it could be Sutton and Mangini are asking talented players to over think?
That's why you disguise your coverage and shift zones behind situational rushers, it worked many times against Pennington. Don't just assume the field behind a rushing linebacker is wide open.
I really like Henry in the short amount of time I've seen him. His hands are great. And his height and long arms are a definite advantage. As unfortunate as Clowney's injury was, I think it opens up a roster spot for Henry.
You and Byz make excellent points, but I still think they are trying to force feed him in the areas that he lacks experience. I wasn't thrilled with the pick to begin with so I'm anxious like everyone else to see him flash a few times. Fingers crossed...
No doubt, I think it makes sense though. Hopefully he'll be comfortable and flying around out there at OLB before we know it. I think it would be reassuring to all of us to see him get a sack in preseason too. I'm expecting him to be comfortable some time around mid season.
And here we go...champ will forever be quoting this 1 remark by an announcer in a preseason game, 2 weeks into the guy's career, as his reasoning for calling Gholston a bust. Living in Texas as you say you do, you should be aware of how poorly Mario Williams played his first year, only to follow it up with a 14 sack season last year. Of course, that would require thought which we know you can't do anyway.
