The individual team sites seem to be the best place for current minor league stats. BTW, another reason to bring up Bell, it would clear a path for the Mets to keep Henry Owens in a "closer" role if they called him up to AAA. Owens numbers so far this year: 14 2/3 IP 4 hits, 5 walks 33 ks
Yeah, Clemens to the Mets is wishful thinking at best. If he comes back it is going to be for the Astros. There is a very, very slim chance that the Yankees could lure him to New York if they can blow him away with an offer but I doubt it. The only part of this game that I saw was the top of the second inning. At first it looked like Lo Duca missed him, but then I realized that Angel Hernandez was the ump so I assume he made the wrong call. In any case I don't know what Bobby Cox was so pissed off about. Moving Smoltz to second was definately not worth getting tossed for.
20 million dollars for 5 months of pitching isn't worth it, i don't care how good he is. I'd rather have 2 mediocre pitchers.
In terms of value for your dollar, I'd say the 11m the Mets gave Wagner would be a much much worse deal, but people were jumping up and down about what a coup the Mets had pulled off.
Well he is quite old to be pitching in AA(27). He never made it out of A ball with the Pirates even though his numbers were pretty good and he always had dominating strikeout numbers. I'd like to see him get a shot at least.
Well that's the Wilpon's problem not ours... and I just brought up that we'd make an offer for him and he would be interested. I think a deal is highly unlikely but the Mets would be a great situation for him so if he was only making $10 or 15 million I think he'd be ok.
If Clemens pitches as well as he did in Houston it's worth it without a doubt. You'd rather have 2 mediocre pitchers than a Cy Young candidate? With Pedro, Clemens and Glavine the Mets major liability (the bullpen) would be covered up by the amount of innings their starters log. They'd be a WS contender.
Jorge Julio. Seriously though they have Wagner at the end but the bullpen is filled with a lot of inexperienced guys who I would not trust in big game situations. The Mets have a strong team but if they have a weakness that's what I think it would be. Then again I guess the only way to get experience is to pitch inexperienced guys.
Um, next time you watch the Mets watch Duaner Sanchez, Darren Oliver, and Aaron Heilman instead of Julio ok? To say it's a liability is beyond retarded... the Mets bullpen has given 0 reason to worry except Julio. They may be inexperience but a guy like Sanchez has proven his worth when he always shuts the door in the 8th whether it's against the Marlins or the Braves. Wagner has blown 3 saves but remember he was hurt most of the spring and is not in season form yet. Also one of the saves falls on David Wright's defense, not Wagner. Including today's game (where Fortuano had a horrible game - and he won't be in the bullpen come September and October) the bullpen's ERA is 3.29 which likely ranks among the top in the league. If you exclude this horrific performance today the ERA was 2.74. If you're a fan of the glitz and flash, the Mets bullpen leads all others with 119 K's in 108.2 innings. Not really much you can oppose to there. Finally, name a bullpen in the majors that is good AND experienced. Besides the Angels I really can't think of any. Having a bullpen with a great closer that is recovering from injury, a lights out setup man, and dependable middle relievers such as Oliver, Heilman, and Bradford easily ranks in the top 10 in the majors. Julio has also been working with Peterson and has allowed 3 ERs in his past 12.2 innings and is starting to grow into someone that we can depend on in tighter games. This bullpen is great, not a liabilty. It will be even better if we ever FREE HEATH BELL! The only problems on the Mets right now is the #5 starter and the fact that we leave 10+ guys on base every night. The lack of run production once guys get on is sickening...
Sanchez has been lights out, but other than that nobody has been overly impressive. Isn't Heilman moving to the rotation anyway?
No Minaya and Randolph both said Heilman is staying in the pen. The fact is the mets do have one of the better bullpens in baseball, so saying its a weakness is a joke
If Heilman stays in the pen then it defintely helps their cause. Like I said, I wouln't trust their bullpen until it proves it can be trusted.
Name 5 bullpens in baseball better then the Met's pen. The only pen I would trust more is the Angel's bullpen because they have a great closer in K-Rod as well as veteran guys leading up to him such as Shields and Donnelly.
Well right now its hard to argue any team having a better bullpen.. But its also hard to have confidence in them in a pressure situation cause none of them have really been in a pressure situation before. besides Wagner who hasn't exactly been lights out in those spots.. So until they do it, it is unclear if they can do it in that kind of situation..Right now it looks good but it is still very early.
Alright I understand that... the original statement was that the bullpen was "The Mets major liability" which is extremely far from the truth so I had to break out with all the numbers.
Ok my bad, thats what happens when you jump into a conversation that you don't know its about. In that case I agree with you 100%, the bullpen is the strength of the team right now..
The entire pitching staff is the strength right now (with the exception of now having our #4 and #5 starters hurt... one of which will be out for the year). The team ERA is just over 3.00 I believe. As I also said before, the problem is that we are leaving 10+ guys on base nightly and we need to get a lot more run production out of the lineup. We're also waiting for the time where Floyd hits one of his rockets away from a fielder instead of right at one...
