Yeah, I agree with you Revis Flytrap. I was really angry with the Gholston pick when we made it. I'm not a fan of this Boom/Bust players when drafting with high picks. I was hoping we'd trade back and take either Mendenhall, Johnson, or Flacco.
Here's the problem. We can't cut him. We are screwed and it was a total mess made by Tannenbaum and Mangini. He has 20 million in guaranteed money in that contract and we would have to absorb it all in the year he was cut. So we just have to live with it. Maybe we can make him the waterboy so at least he his embarrassed to show his face for the next 3 or 4 years.
I had him in every mock draft I did. I was 50-50 in my reasoning to get him. Half of me said we need a pass rushing OLB, the other half of me said we need to take him to prevent him from falling into the Patriots hands drafting right after us. F--king dumb 49ers had to make that stupid 2007 draft day trade giving the PATS their 1st round pick of 2008 to get back in the 1st round of 2007 draft to take Joe Staley. I've been giving him plenty of a learning curve pass this year at a new position in a new defense. However, I became very alarmed watching him during a few plays on Sunday not exhibiting any breakneck speed, strength or athletic abililty. I'm at a 7 on the 1-10 nervous scale.
We should offer him to Green Bay right now for Favre. They get a top 6 pick that's signed which is better than any compensation they can get even if we win the SB.
I wonder what kind of advice Gholston is getting from Lawrence Taylor right now. Gholston: "Hey, Lawrence. What did you do when your coach called you out your rookie year because you weren't doing shit even though you were a high first round draft pick and were getting $40 million?" Lawrence: "Dude, you suck!"
'Hey Lawrence, can you give me advice on how to improve my technique?' 'Bitch, just give me some money or find me some crack, I can't stop wit the shakes.'
I don't understand why people were so willing to give the guy a free pass. No offense, but if you're the 6th overall pick, you damn well better be ready for the NFL in my opinion. You should be good enough to learn on the job. You might not be at your best your rookie season, but to never really get on the field is pathetic. The problem is people force fed the idea that he's going to need time to develop. He probably convinced himself of the same thing. It's like cramming for a test. He knew he was going to get a free pass because everyone was already apologizing for him before he even played a snap. It's absolutely ridiculous. Someone made mention of him playing a new position in a new league. New position, okay, you're still just a football player, and his job is essentially to rush the passer. Sure there's things he's got to get acclimated to, but regardless, as a 6th overall pick type of talent, your ass should be on that field. None of this "I need time to develop" shit. We threw Brick in the fire, and look how that's paying dividends now. The only difference is he was at least prepared to play even if it wasn't at that high a level his rookie season. It's not like Gholston has a Pro Bowler in front of him in Thomas. And if you can find a rookie for me that's not playing in a new league, I'd like to meet him.
It's hard not to be worried about Gholston at this point. He needs to at least show some flashes in the final quarter of the season.
His most productive play this year has been on special teams (which hasn't been all that productive!!) Let's face it-- the guy's a bust.
thats exactly who i wanted everybody said that would be too high for him but at #6 he was the bpa and thats exactly how u should draft, this is wat drafting for need gets u
Another worrisome thing is that you really never hear anyone on the Jets say he's making progress or has talent, etc. Even when Thomas was a rookie and barely played, you'd read guys say things like "BT has all the moves and talent, just needs to put it all together." At least some glimmer of hope that the guy'd be productive.
The kid had played a grand total of 12 games in the NFL at a position he didn't play in college...relax...its gonna take him a bit longer but I have faith that he'll get it. Too early for bust talk. At least give it till mid next season. If there is no glimmer by then, we can talk bust.
The guy is a rookie. Last year he played defensive end in a 4-3 and now his first year in the pros and outside LB in a 3-4. Major difference between these two posistions. Alot more stuff to cover in the 3-4. You can't really say he is a bust until he stinks it up next year. Gotta give the kid some time.
I hope you're right. I pray every night that he turns out like LaMarr Woodley -- another Big Ten 4-3 DE who had to learn to play OLB in the 3-4.
^^I hope there's a gm or two out there who shares your belief. At this point, I would trade him in the same kind of deal we got for Drob. In other words, just take his contract.
It took Bryan Thomas 3+ seasons and a position change to prove he could play @ this level. It will take time and an opprtunity for VG to show his stuff. He may have what it takes next year or maybe not. The most important thing is giving him that shot, it may be as an injury replacement or something like that. He has to have the snaps during live play to learn how to do it. Everyone is saying how they noticed his play last week, maybe thats because he took in a lot of snaps. Give him a whole game plan and you may be surprised.
I agree, and i didnt even like the pick to begin with. Gotta give him another season before you write him off.
