Shawn Green on Shawn Green Even he knows he sucks. With the Delgado injury this is probably moot for a few days anyway, unless Willie's gut decides it's time to give Chavez and Anderson some OF starts.
I said from the start that if the argument is that Milledge should get at bats to see what he can do I can see it. Your argument was that Milledge is a much better player, and right now that's just not true. At this point all that matters is getting to and winning in the postseason, and there is no evidence that Milledge would help them do that against righthanded pitching. Right now, Green is better in that spot, and as I said before, it's not even close.
If you just look at the overall numbers against RHP this year, no, it's not particularly close. But as I said in my earlier post Green is living off his insane start to the season and has been trending downward ever since, with no reason to think he'll improve. Milledge on the other hand had a much better August against RHP then his first month up. Their numbers for August against RHP are pretty similar with Milledge having the slight edge in OPS. Green as I said was .333/.404/.400 in 45 AB compared to .348/.375/.435 for Milledge in 46 AB. I also don't believe I ever said that Milledge was a much better player then Green, just that he should be playing every day. Going purely on a talent perspective at this point in time it's probably a toss up between Green and Milledge but when you factor in all the other reasons why it's beneficial for the Mets to play Milledge and sit Green it becomes a slam dunk in the kid's favor.
You keep discounting Green's start, but then focus primarily on his June. He has not, in fact, been trending downward all year, but rather has a U-shaped pattern - high in April, downward to June, and then upward since then. The pattern has continued in the first few days in September, as he has a .357 OBP and .500 SLG in the three games, so the prevailing pattern is that he is if anything getting better at the plate, not worse. He also had an .811 OPS in last year's postseason; if Lo Duca, Reyes, Wright, Valentin, or Chavez had managed that the Mets probably would have been in the WS. You didn't say that Milledge was much better, but you did say that he was better, something you seem to have backed off on. http://forums.theganggreen.com/showpost.php?p=616695&postcount=146 At this point I couldn't care less about 2008 and beyond. Based on right now there is absolutely nothing wrong with Green playing against righthanded pitchers, and there are plenty of arguments that he is the best choice, at least until they clinch. All of the hyperbolic rants against Green ("There's no defending [him playing]"; "Even he knows he sucks"; "it becomes a slam dunk in the kid's favor") don't change that.
And if Green could've caught a fly ball that was in his glove the Mets probably would've went to the WS as well. My problem with Green as a player is basically the same as my problem with Loduca, as aging players with little to no power they're basically at the mercy of luck and their BABIP at the plate. I like what I've seen from Milledge alot this season, his approach at the plate is much better then last year and I think if they would stop jerking him around and gave him some solid playing time we'd see him be the better option sooner as well as later. You keep saying there are plenty of arguments for Green to be playing but I really haven't heard any other then "he's a lefty" and in my mind that certainly doesn't come close to outweighing the upside that Milledge has if he's allowed to play.
i really wish maine or perez would give us a reason to be upset that it's going to be the 3 old ones at the top of the playoff rotation, but they aren't.
when we start seeing this nonsense from beltran i think it's time to start considering exactly how much ricky and his preaching "aggresiveness" has to do with the rash of idiocy we've seen on the bases lately.
Considering they traded their best prospects for Teixera, their deadline moves aren't looking too hot right now.
so I see by the scoreboard, the Mets once again getting owned by a journeyman no name pitcher huh....albeit the "B" lineup some things never change
