Well I think the point is that American Football is the sport with the deepest cultural roots in the US. Showing a guy, who grew up with a (moderate) muslim education and who is himslef a (moderate) muslim, having success in said sport is an example as to how someone can fully integrate in american society even though he believes in Allah and not Jesus. In the end it's an example as to how american muslims are your brothers, not your enemies... Also it shows that on 11/9 all americans cry and honor the people who died in that terrorist attack, not just christians. That said if he is to get a sack I hope they don't scream "Wilkerson blows up the opposing QB"! Would be akward...
Just the fact that as article like this has to be written shows the ignorance that is still there on Islam. Maybe it's because of where I grew up but being muslim was just another religion, and for me.... it still is. EDIT: Some nice responses in this thread btw....Well said Mambo
Why the fuck would anyone compare a black NFL player, likely a member of the NATION of Islam, a barely recognizable offshoot of the Islamic religion, to a bunch of Arabic zealots? Oh right, because some people are ignorant. This article is fucking stupid.
You have to admit though that a lot of people actually are ignorant and put everything islam related together...
i gotta admit, i was expecting a lot less when i opened this thread than what i was presented with. i was thinking this was gonna read like a lot of threads in the BS section. nice responses fellas.
Of course I do. I said that in my post. This article just furthers that, though. The connection between Wilkerson and Arab extremists is tenuous at best, but people who didn't even know about this kid are now going to be thinking about it on 9/11. Way to bring it to the forefront, Glauber. This isn't some attempt at unity; it's sensationalist journalism masquerading as a peace attempt.
He's right, Islam and pretty much any other religion is not inherently violent. Religion is about population control, but it can and often is paired with violence to strengthen that control. Since Islam is one of the most ancient and resilient religions there are, it has more violent interpretations built into it's doctrine to maintain strength. Religion isn't violent, people are violent.
Unless you're counting its Abrahamic roots, Islam, at 1400 years old, is downright young compared to the other major world religions: Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity
I suppose it could be worse. A group of learned fellow's in Texas, saw a Sikh walking down the street right after 9/11 and tortured and killed him because they thought the Sikh gentleman was of the same religion as the terrorists that brought down the Towers...... Yes people in this country are beyond dumb.................I think this is just about the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. Edit: Who cares what religion MW prays to, he is just a football player.
Talk about ignorance...on Sept 14th 2001 I was home from college at the beach in NJ. I walked into the 7-11 I have been going to since I was 13. I know the owner and his family well, they are from India. Some asshole walks in to get a coffee and starts giving the guy shit about 9/11. Saying things like "You fuckers arent gonna hide anymore...We are watching you motherfuckers" The man whos name is Praveen kept telling the guy "Sir Im Indian...from India...Im Hindu" Id expect that shit in KY or TX but not NJ. The guy just kept cursing at him then stormed out. I understand that right after the attacks everyone was extremely emotional and rightfully so however its a shame to still see this type of ignornace not just about Islam but people not from this country 10 years later.
This is a non-story...However, I am really concerned if Wilkerson follows the ways of Ramadan. Every Muslim must fast until the sunset's...How can a football player do this during the middle of the season? The muslim twin brothers with the Vikings and Cardinals did this and it left them so out of energy
Like ME!?!?!?! Haters gonna hate It says in the article he doesn't but plans to when his career is over... many soccer players in Europe don't as well (although some do).
Ramadan has already passed this calander year. its not always the same time of year like Christmas/HoweverYouSpellChaunakah/Kwanza
