I can understand your thought process regarding the bold, and it's valid. I'll just say that imo it was a special circumstance. Taylor had been struggling and already had 2 hits to the head or concussions within a week. Mayfield was the #1 pick in the draft. There was a very good chance that he could see some action in the game. While on a short week, there's no way the D could have practiced against Mayfield, but Bowles and Rodgers could have had a contingency plan in case Mayfield did play of how they would play him. Heck, I've never coached a sports team, but even I know that with a rookie QB you disguise coverages and blitz/pressure him. Bowles didn't do that. He sat back in a passive zone. Mayfield isn't Taylor. Mayfield is extremely accurate, highly accurate on the move, mobile and smart. I definitely fault Bowles for the way he allowed that game to be taken away. If I was the owner, Bowles wouldn't have wanted to be Bowles following that loss, as I would have reamed him a new asshole, told him he had 13 weeks to fix this shit show or he was gone, and told him that there had better not be another Crowell like incident or a stupid taunting penalty like Johnson or that player would immediately be cut and Bowles' life made a living hell. For certain, following that abomination, Bowles would have been demoted and Mac would have been elevated over Bowles, and Bowles would have had to report to Mac, and Mac would be put on notice as well.
I mostly agree. He did make an adjustment though. They let off the pass rush and dropped into coverage which gave Mayfield enough time to work. What makes me nuts is bates running thr same plays way too frequently. Bates needs to expand the playbook and get a little more creative. I hate when they play to protect a lead. Exactly what did you expect when you have a QB who is nowhere near ready being mentored by a coaching staff which will never be ready? The Jets had two capable QBs at training camp and they decided to put the kid in so he can get his ass handed to him game after game? 30 INTs and 50 SACKS should do absolute wonders for Darnold's confidence going forward. Of course, this is assuming he gets out of this season alive and well. I don't know who is making the decisions over there in Jetsland, but their thought process is convoluted...to say the least.
