I already said Namath to Maynard. But Vinny to Keyshawn??? O'Brien to Walker???? Not better than Chad to Coles. I did say you can make a legitimate argument for O'Brien to Toon though.
Coles no pro bowls on the Jets only 1 with Ramsey in Washington. Pennington, no pro bowls on the Jets. Vinny and Key pro bowl together, Walker 2 pro bowls, Sauer 4 pro bowls, Toon 3 pro bowls all on the Jets. Vinny and Key were outright great in 98.
I thought Coles made the Pro Bowl last season. 2nd most receptions in a single Jets season in 2006. Chad should have been there in 2002. Walkers 2 Pro Bowls weren't with O'Brien throwing to him. Vinny to Chrebet in 1998 was great too. I'd put Vinny to Chrebet over Vinny to Keyshawn.
CORRECTION - I guess technically Coles didn't make the Pro Bowl last year, but he was called up to go but couldn't make it in time.
Chrebet had a great year in 98 but Key was the No. 1 guy and he was also an incredible blocker in the running game. I agree Chrebet had his best year in 98 but Key was the No. 1 guy that year. Walker's two pro bowls weren't with OBrien but he had a sensational year in 86 when Toon made the Pro Bowl but Walker had a 1,000 yard season with 12TD's and averaged 20.7 YPC. In 2002 Gannon was probably the best QB in the AFC followed by Manning. Chad had a great year but he only played in 13 games and didn't have the yards or TD's. If Herm had started him at the begining of the season he probably would have and we may have had the home game in the playoffs that we needed to take us to the SB that year.
If being the No. 1 guy has any meaning than you can't keep mentioning Sauer. Gannon and Manning were definitely 1 and 2 in '02, but Chad was just about as good as anyone that year and should have gone. He still ended up w/ 20 TD's. Walker really could have been something special if we had better QB's to throw him the ball.
Sauer was 2, 1 and 2 in the league in receptions 66 through 68. He was 4,2 and 3 in recieving yards in the league those 3 years. He was top 10 in TD and yards from scrimage in the league 3 years and he was arguably the best reciever on the Jets those 3 years. Sauer was often times lined up against the No. 1 CB of the opposing team. Chrebet was widely used in 3 WR sets and very often faced a safety or LB. Personally I thought Sauer and Toon where the two best WR the Jets had. Maynard was very much like Walker and Sauer very much like Toon, he was both a possession and a serious deep threat WR.
Watch a tape of the shootout in Miami. O'Brien and Walker hooked up for three TDs in that game alone.
Testaverde was great in 98. I have never argued with that. He was also the most important player on the team that year and had more to do with the team's success than anyone. However, that was his only good season as a Jet and by far and away the best year of his career. In 99 he was hurt. In 2000 he was incredibly inconsistent and led the league in picks. In 2001, Edwards put reigned him in after the 2000 interceptions and he was not a factor even though the Jets made the playoffs. Testaverde was putrid in 2002 and Pennington did take the job from him in 2002. In fact, Pennington's play in 2002 indicated that Edwards should have given him the job in 2001. Testaverde was done with the achilles injury in 1999. After that, it was clear that he no longer wanted to get hit. He hurried his throws and was uncomfortable in the pocket. That led to the picks and eventually the losses, which piled up starting in 2002. In all, Testaverde was a mediocre QB. His career TD and yardage numbers look good only because he played so long. He is a compiler and not a star. One very great year by Testaverde and Johnson do not overcome multiple good years by other Jet QB/WR combos. Todd and Walker had good years in 78, 79, 81 and 82. Why not mention them? Pennington and Coles concededly have had only two good seasons together - 2002 and 2006 (Coles was gone by 2003 and returned in 2005 when Pennington was injured). All in all, Pennington's career as a Jet trumps Testaverde's in my eyes. He has a better winning percentage, three playoff appearances to Testaverde's one, a better TD to INT ratio, a better QB rating etc. You are right about Sauer. I stand corrected. You forget how good he was, even if it was for a short time.
If Walker, Toon, and O'Brien could have stayed healthy for two or three years in a row that offense would have taken the Jets deep into the playoffs.
Well since he's only been in the league since 1999, how exactly was he in attendance at the 1993 pro bowl? Spectator?
Perhaps a poll on TGG.com of who we think was the best QB/WR duo in Jets history to settle this once and for all?
