You want to give up the #1 pick this season? Cause that's the least it would cost. I want some of the rocket scientists on this site to say now, "oh i wouldn't give up more then a 125th round pick for Deuce." unreal

    From todays Daily News.

Saints are looking for a 3rd round pick for him. Barlow was also mentioned. The thing about Duckett thats interesting is that even if down the road you get the featured back you are looking for, Duckett would be a solid backup...and a great goal line/short yardage back.

3rd rounder just seems pretty expensive..or maybe not.

    Suggs not fit for Jets

Flunks physical, goes back to Browns

    By RICH CIMINI
    DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

The Jets say Lee Suggs isn't physically fit to play football. The Browns say he's fine. The end result: It's back to the phones for Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, who resumes his search for a veteran running back.
Finding a quasi-replacement for Curtis Martin is getting harder by the day.

The Jets, who agreed Monday to trade cornerback Derrick Strait to the Browns in exchange for Suggs, voided the deal yesterday when the injury-plagued Suggs failed their physical.

Suggs, who would've competed for the starting running back position, was flunked because of a surgically repaired knee that concerned the Jets, according to multiple sources.

The Jets, fearing that Martin won't be ready for the season opener because of a career-threatening knee injury, hope to make another trade in the coming days. Two prominent names on their short list are the Falcons' T.J. Duckett and the 49ers' Kevan Barlow, both more accomplished than Suggs. They're "very interested" in Duckett, a source said.

"It's fair to assume there could be a lot of moves," said Eric Mangini, anticipating additions at various positions.

Suggs seemed like a good fit. He arrived Monday night at Weeb Ewbank Hall and chatted briefly with Mangini, who told him to start studying. But the trade got blown up yesterday morning, when it was time to take the physical.

Coincidentally, Suggs hasn't suffered any knee injuries in his three-year NFL career - he has hurt his ankle, thumb, neck, toe and shoulder - but he did tear a knee ligament in 2001 at Virginia Tech.

What makes the aborted trade so curious is that Suggs seemingly is healthy for a change. He hasn't missed a training-camp practice, according to the Browns, and he played five series in their preseason opener against the Eagles.

The Browns released a statement that disputes the Jets' medical decision, with GM Phil Savage saying that Suggs will return to practice immediately.

"Medical opinions can vary from team to team, and obviously this is one team's opinion," Savage said.

Said Browns coach Romeo Crennel: "They've got a new regime down there, so maybe they're doing things a little differently. All I can say is the kid was practicing for us."

Mangini refused to divulge any specifics regarding the failed physical.

"We have a whole series of tests - we're very thorough with the process - and he just didn't pass those tests," Mangini said.

Suggs returned to Cleveland, where he likely will be the No.3 running back. Strait, who was wearing a Browns T-shirt and meeting with the Cleveland coaches when the news broke, was en route to New York late yesterday. He's expected to practice today.

This was a setback for the Jets, but Mangini tried to put a positive spin on it, chalking it up to "standard operating procedure."

Now the pressure is on Tannenbaum to get another back. The Jets lack confidence in Derrick Blaylock and Cedric Houston, and would like to acquire a starting-caliber back.

Duckett is an intriguing possibility. The Falcons, with Warrick Dunn and promising rookie Jerious Norwood at running back, are expected to put Duckett on the trading block after this weekend's games. They're believed to be seeking a third-round pick. The Steelers, too, are thought to be interested in Duckett.

At 6-0, 254 pounds, Duckett, a former first-rounder, is a bruising back who was used as a goal-line runner last season. In four seasons, he has rushed for 2,175yards and 31 touchdowns.

Barlow, who split time last season with Frank Gore, also is believed to be available. Barlow (6-1, 231) has 3,614 yards and 24 touchdowns in five seasons. Currently, he's battling a hamstring injury.
