If the Pats see Garoppolo as their next QB and Brady hates Garoppolo's contract that much, they'll trade Brady. Many HOFers have switched teams at the end of their careers (Favre, Montana, Manning, Namath, etc), and if those teams weren't above letting their stars go Belichick certainly isn't.
But Brady is still very good. I have a hard time seeing them getting rid of Brady and taking that kind of gamble. He'll start until the wheels fall off, where he starts throwing a bunch of picks, and contributing to losses when he normally would help the team win. He isn't that now and I don't think he will be anytime soon unfortunately.
Brady's 40 years old. When the end comes for an elite QB it can come quickly and without warning; Favre and Manning went from elite one season to replacement level the next. It's possible Brady has 5 years left, but it's also possible this is his last good year. If the Pats see Garoppolo as the next Brady, Belichick won't let get sentiment get in the way of doing what's best for the franchise.
Then there's also the possibility that Belichek will use Brady's retirement as a means to also retire. It's a weird situation too because Brady is still ridiculously in shape while other QB's his age would be in the decline and a decision to replace them would be much clearer
God I hope so. Then maybe we could win the division for a change. But if Belichick isn't leaving anytime soon, he knows that while Brady is probably the most impressive 40 year old QB ever, even Brady can't beat Father Time. If he likes Garoppolo enough, he'll choose Garoppolo over Brady.
Call the chiefs this off season... See what they want for Alex Smith or Mahomes... Or keep an eye from afar on Bridgewaters recovery.... Brees only if we look like a contender minus a q.b. there's a ton of draftable qb's even outside of the top 3.... Well have plenty of options when the time comes Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
Kirk cousins will be a 49er. I dont want the jets to overpay for Jimmy G ( see Matt Flynn, Brock Oswiler, Mike Glennon). If they dont secure a top 3 pick (assuming the top 3 prospects come out), it will be a very difficult spot for them. They will pretty much be in the same spot now. They need to get Petty or Hack in there to play to see this year.
I hope the Jets just trade out of the top 5 and draft more defense. No real reason to draft a QB as we already have our mentor on the roster.
Sign Cousins and use our top draft pick on a mad dog pass rusher. Use the rest of our draft on skill players or whatever BAP falls in our laps.
Overthecap.com has some cap figures for next season and I can easily see Jets being able to make a run for Cousins, 49ers will have 49 mil, and will prob be able to make a few roster adjustments to get to 60 mil. Jets will have $81,225,525 when they cut Mo and Skrine (and these 2 cuts are no brainers to me). Redskins will have 58,692.900 in cap and do not have any high end players to cut in order to create more cap. Only the Colts will have more cap space in 2018 and they have Luck. So unless they end up with a high draft pick( I don't think they will because Luck will win them a few games), Jets could theoretically be in the drivers seat, money wise, to land Cousins
Given the way Mo Wilk has played since signing the big contract he'll likely be cut next spring. If the Jets 1st round pick winds up being #6-#10 I'd try to trade up throw in Mo Wilk and other picks. Addition by subtraction and it saves them from giving up a 2nd round pick in addition to whatever picks they'd have to offer to move up and draft a QB. If there aren't any takers just dump Mo and go to plan B, C etc. Another possibility - The Chiefs need to decide on Smith by the 3rd day of the league year like the Jets do with Mo Wilk. Why not swap players? They both carry a 20mm cap hit next year and the Jets shed a player with no desire to play now that he's been paid. Smith gets a 1 year audition to prove he deserves top 10-15 QB salary. At 44 next year he still has at least 6-7 years in the tank. The Jets can build around him with that amount of time left, he's basically Chad Pennington with better mobility and a better arm. It kicks the can well down the road and they don't have to cough up multiple picks to land a top QB in the 2018 draft. If the chiefs dump him and he wants ridiculous $$ as a FA then pass but if you can swap Mo Wilk for him it's a win win imho.
The plot thickens. The Giants and especially the Steelers might come into play too. Big Ben is basically done I would say, the Giants will need to start thinking about QBs sooner rather than later. So the Steelers might snag up Smith if Ben retires, the Giants might draft a QB, who knows. I don't like the look of things.
The Giants drafted Davis Webb this year. Supposedly he is their future QB. I've never saw him play so I have no idea if he's any good but for them to us a 3rd round pick on him they must like him. I don't think Smith fits the Steelers down the field WR system. Ben has been awful this year but I don't think its because his play dropped off dramatically like Peyton's did his last year. To me the issue is personnel. They don't have a quality safety valve at TE like they did in the past. They have 1 NFL quality starting WR in Brown and dregs after that. Martavis Bryant would be the #4 receiver on this years Jets team if that. Heyward-Bey wouldn't make this years Jets team. JuJu Smith has 12 catches in 5 games. A 2nd round pick should produce a lot more than he has to date.
I've always liked Webb. I see him as a 1st/2nd round talent who got taken lower because Goff had a bad rookie season. That said, if the Giants get a top 5 pick, they'll probably take a QB.
He is a prototypical NFL QB prospect, 6'5" with a big arm, but not very mobile. I saw him play in the Senior Bowl where he threw a long TD bomb. Was considered a top 10 QB prospect in the draft. He was one of these guys that started at some mid-western program but got beaten out as a starter by someone else (I think Mahomes) and then transferred to Cal. Other than that, don't know much about him either. The way the Giants are playing, he may see action soon.
It's quite likely Cousins will just decide based on money. If the 49ers offer $22M a year and the Jets off $26M, he'll be a Jet. Cousins will be the highest paid player in the NFL next season.
In 2004, Peyton Manning signed a 7 year $99M deal, which was a record at the time. This after he played the 2003 season on the franchise tage for $18M. His contact came out to just over $14M a year. Here is an article for reference http://www.espn.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=1748909 The 2018 cap will be double what the 2004 cap was. Cousins will be 29 years old coming off of 3 consecutive 4,000 yard 25+ td seasons. With up to 9 or 10 teams bidding on him and tons of cap space available, there is a very good chance he gets over $28M a year from someone. The Redskins could even tag him against for $35M.
The Garrapolo and Cousins supporters need to ask themselves one question.... What have the Ravens won since they handed Flacco that big contract? When you pay a QB who is good but not great, great money it sets your franchise back. How do you think Denver can afford all this great veteran talent on defense? They pay their QB nothing.
I say bite the bullet and draft a good young FQB Or sign J Garappolo who is only 25...maybe he gets ancy waiting for the GOAT to go down
