I saw on ESPN that Mangold wants back next year. We really have all of the leverage with his contract and age. Since we have so many holes to fill and need a veteran guy on the line, I'd say we should restructure his contract for like half that money and maybe a little money guaranteed. I can't imagine Mangold would expect much more than that. He could hit the open market, but I don't think he will make a ton more than what we would offer him.
Nick Mangold is the type of player you keep forever. Do people really want to cut him loose because he missed games this year? Before 2016 he missed a grand total of 4 games in his accumulated career. Personally, I hope the team listens to the dumbass opinion to get rid of him, because he deserves to play for a winner.
Mangold is the best. Klecko Namath Maynard Chrebet Toon That's what Jets fans get. Once in a generation players that get stuck in the big suck.
I really hope Mangold comes back. We have a lot of immediate needs but center is one we can probably slide on for another year. Just renegotiate the terms of his contract.
I really think the Jets will try to get Mangold to play next season on a reduced contract. He said he wants to stay with the team and would discuss a pay cut when that time comes. He may need surgery in the off season , won't know for about another month when his injury is reevaluated. I don't think he will be offered a large contract in free agency , especially if he has surgery so he may very well return. He has been a great player and I wish him success no mater what his decision.
Mangold said that he has no plans on retiring and wants to continue playing with the Jets. He never struck me as a player who was all about the money and so although we could save 9 million with a cut, I would prefer we restructure him, and get him on a cheaper deal. He deserves to come back and retire as a Jet. He is also still talented and has never been the source of any locker room drama. Also, our o-line is a mess, getting rid of him means getting rid of a valuable asset and also a mentor and good locker room character.
They need to reduce his salary, but not insult the man with a ridiculously lowball offer. His next contract, which probably will be his last, should reflect his years as an anchor on this team and his level of play. Once Mangold went down, the rest of the oline was not far behind. Lets hope that fact wasn't lost on Macc. We don't get to see many homegrown players stay with the Jets their entire career. We have a few and Mangold should and will be one of them.
