I agree on the first point. I do think after looking at the torrent of the game that neutralizing the rush was one of the reasons they went with the shorter passing game. I have to give credit to the OC for that because they did take the pass rush out of the game. They also trapped the hell out of those little D-linemen, which was also good strategy. I wanted more downfield passing, but when I look at the game again, I do see some nice timing patterns for 18 yard gains and such. The one time they did throw anything close to a fly pattern, the receiver was BJ Askew. That kinda left me scratching my head. If you get a chance, watch Washington's 50 yard pass play again. All this talk about picking up blitzes and stuff and Buffalo's pass rush. Perfect play call by Schottzie. Washington starts off to the left in the flat where he comes upon a penetrating LB, but instead of blocking him, he puts a spin move on him that left the LB flat-footed with an expression of "Oh, shit!" as he realizes that Washington wasn't there to block him, but was the hot receiver. Some beautiful cuts and cutbacks on that play as he made his way down the field. We're Jet fans. We'll have to unlearn years of behavior before we can deal with success. We keep expecting draw plays and such. And outcome doesn't always equate to a good plan. Blindly accepting that if points are scored, things must be perfect is kind of naive. On the other hand, a lot of us will tend to be overly critical until we learn to trust this staff. Again, when we got the ball in the 2nd quarter I wanted to attack more. Well, the old adage about perception being reality was proved to me when I watched the first half again tonight. We scored on 2 out of 3 possessions in the 2nd quarter. Guess that was a pretty good attack, after all. When I see Hackett-like play calling at times, it's hard to realize that those plays are now part of an overall plan, rather than what seemed like random plays that appeared to be designed to infuriate Jet fans rather than to gain yardage. Now if we could somehow have kept Mrs. Blaylock in labor for the next 3 months...
Very well said. I guess it's easy to be satisfied with the way things are when the result is a win. But becoming complacent will only come back to bite them later. Hopefully that is not the case and Mangini & Co will fix anything that needs fixing.
Perfectly put. People need to look at that final drive again..the one the put the game away. The Jets got the ball with 9:07 remaining. Pennington hit Coles for 16 yards on a pass down field. The Jets had the ball at the Bills 42 yard line with about 8 and a half minutes to go in the game. When Cedric Houston scored there was 3:20 left. The Jets used more than 5 minutes of play clock to go 42 yards. The play to Coles set up all the short passes that followed. I just dont see this as hackett like...I see an offense that has been fairly aggressive..even with the lead..passing a lot on first downs.
Thanks for backing me up Exactly. I''m talking about the 5 yard dump off squarely up the middle. That's not the sort of pass that should be squeezed in. A few times he tried to massage it into quadruple covergae. It goes without saying that short passing game is imperitive to the Jets attack. An honest Jets fan will admit that Hackett was a genious before his time. His ball control style of offense dominated games. He maximised what he had with Chad's shouldder and arm at the time. We should have played NE in the title game. Severely underappreciated.
