Yea we all have expectations, I don’t expect the owner of the team to lay them out for me piece by piece though. I sure don’t expect him to,on the first day of the offseason, to make any rock solid decree. And sorry if I don’t take “ I have no mandate” to mean anything other than he has no mandate, espically when we haven’t made a single player transaction and the uniforms are still in the laundry service. Too many variables, hell we don’t even know who will be in this years draft yet.
Well, if memory serves Steinbrenner was big on results. Al Davis comes to mind too. Jerry Jones is another owner that demands excellence. Kraft wouldn't put up with simply being competitive. Our ownership is happy just to get the participation trophy as if this is Pop Warner. No mandate..
No mandate means exactly that. Anything goes as long as the team has a pulse. Just like 2017. Just be competitive and we'll get around to winning at some point in the future.. This is the best we can do after 7 years without a playoff appearance or 50 years since a SB. Pathetic but that's what its come to in Jetland. I guess if ownership doesn't commit to winning in a specific timeframe, we as fans have nothing to hold them accountable for. Expectations = Mandate.. "I expect the team to do ___________ or else". It could be a bit more challenging than suiting up and knowing which way the field is.. Lite a fire under some complacent asses. Lets hope there is at least some reasonable expectation other than showing up and being competitive in games. We just did that in 2017. I'd like to think $100mil buys more than that.
Pretty crazy that we finally have somebody in charge who wants to take time and build a winner instead of forcing the issue to make the playoffs. All this comment by Johnson means is that he is going to give the rebuild time. If we fired Mac and Bowles right now, you'd be at square one with this rebuild again. Just get better every year, it's truly that simple. If this team doesn't improve on 5-11, heads will be rolling in Florham Park for sure.
I actually don't have a problem with there being no playoff mandate next season, but I think it's ridiculous to make a point of saying it publicly the first day of the off-season. What purpose does it serve to deliberately set expectations low right from the start? No one would expect a mandate of playoffs or bust when they each have 3 years left on their contracts, but what exactly does it hurt to say that the ownership views seven straight seasons out of the playoffs as unacceptable, and is going to do everything they can to help the team become long-term contenders as soon as possible? That gives all the wiggle room anyone could need, yet also sends a clear message that anyone, player, coach, or administrator, who isn't helping the team reach that goal shouldn't expect to stay. It seems to me that that is the message every owner should send to their entire organization.
How much improvement does $100mil buy these days? I could understand if the Jets were in Cap Hell and totally dependent on their draft picks for new talent but that's not the case. Is it unreasonable to expect more ROI than 6-10 for $100mil? Maybe it is for the Jets. Who knows.
It can buy you a shiny new QB named Kirk Cousins who will instantly make the NYJ a perennial playoff contender, and after adding a couple pieces to this team like an edge rusher and CB, this team would be competing for Super Bowls. Brady is going to be done in 2 seasons. Big Ben has been flirting with retirement for a while now. The time to build this team is now.
They made declarations of playoffs or bust? If they did they were creating their own news. Not letting the media dictate it for them. Everybody says their goal is a championship. If this gains traction you'll hear one of them say that tomorrow. Just more click bait here. It means nothing to me. Where did this actually come from anyway? Jeffro didn't post any reference, which is the type of shit Semeni and Manoosh does, and I only saw a paste without the author.
Well, Steinbrenner was well known for making his own news. Same for Jerry Jones and Al Davis. But the one thing all those Owners had was expectations that had to be met. All of them wound up with championships in their respective sports too. Regarding the link, give me a sec. This thread is actually a mash up and I think the link got lost in the merge.
I am DONE with the Grifter Coach and GM plus those two Con Men the Johnston Brothers Enough is enough ...they draft FQB I'll stick around the Circus and enjoy the Clown Show and see where it goes If nothing happens or they get some retread other than MCGown....CYA I listened to the new Giants GM on the FAN today...absolutely no nonsense come right to the point guy : "at the end of the day ..it's about winning" Can't stand being stuck in woosyville
It means they wouldn't be upset if spending $100mil doesn't result in a playoff team. If this FO/CS can't put together a playoff team with a $100mil in cash, all our draft picks +1 AND the talent already on the roster, then there's really no point.. Maybe being mediocre IS the goal after all. They have all the time in the world to accomplish that.
I, for one, am glad that the Wilpons don't own the Jets, or people would be going nuts hearing they're going to cut payroll after a disastrous season...
The issue with this organization is that they seem to be treating a 5 win season as an accomplishment.
I understand your point, and yes those guys you mentioned did demand and verbally expressed that their teams won. Jerry Jones was quoted as saying he was surprised that his team did not make playoffs this year. However, George Steinbrenner actually had his most success when he let Gene Michael guide the team through development of home grown players and added FA accordingly. Jerry Jones on the other hand had one of the best HC in the game but because of his ego got rid of him and sent his team into mediocrity for a long time. I don't like the no playoff mandate either but it doesn't matter what Chris says or doesn't say, the team could end up being really good with some FA sprinkled in amongst good draft picks. That is how the 2009-20010 jets were built by the way, draft picks and some good FA signings. Just roll with it Cman, if they end up 4-12 next year, I'm sure people will be fired.
They haven’t spent anything yet. Right now it’s the same team that just went 5-11 and has no qb. Can they spend the money before we go lynching over innocuous comments?
What exactly are you looking for here. Want cj to bang the table right now, playoffs or heads on pikes and have mac go all Tanny with the cap space?
