From 1997-2004 we had very good crowds most of the time....I have only been to the detroit game this year, and the crowd was lame, but i've heard it loud as hell a lot of games during the 2002-2004 seasons.....how have the crowds been this year as a whole season ticket holders?? on the flip side, I went to see the Jets at Carolina last year, and the crowd was a joke....no one said anything to me with my Vilma jersey on, and you could hear a pin drop I don't understand why we can't be like arrowhead or denver or something, come on guys have some passion
Honestly, maybe our fan base is turning into something similar to the Giants fan base...older, quieter, apathetic and docile.
over and over the fans were told this is a rebuilding year, even though we are barely 2 years removed from the Pittsburgh divisional playoff game. I guess some fans just don't believe in this team yet, but it is guaranteed if we are in it late in the season the stadium will rock. As for why season ticket holders don't go to games...you have to put yourself in the shoes of a season ticket holder. Some of them are very very VERY rich people...some are more modest but I've talked to a few who are season ticket holders of damn near every team in the tri state area. One guy I met was a Jets/Giants/Islanders/Rangers season ticket holder. He picks and chooses what games he goes to. Think about it, the guy pays for 41 Islander home games and goes to maybe 6 of them a year(I think he was from Saddle River), distributing the rest of of the tickets as he sees fit. He just wants to have his seat ready just in case something huge happens. The Gretzky retirement, Messier number retirement, Jets-Packers in 2002, that Giants/Eagles game where they clinched a playoff spot....that sort of stuff. The money they waste on this is of no importance to them. they come late, leave early...what do they care? They take it for granted, they can go to as many games as they please.
My friend's family has had season tix since 77. I've gone to more games than I can count over the years. I hit opening day this year, and it will probably be my last time going. It took 3 hours to get there, and 4 coming home. And not only that, there seem to be more people around just looking to get drunk and cause trouble not even interested in the game. That may not be the case all around the stadium, but the idiots near us throwing stuff at Pat fans was ridiculous. Guys in their 40s and 50s throwing pretzels, cups, peanuts whatever...I was embarrassed. And I scream my brains out when we're on D and keep my mouth shut when the offense has the ball...so many folks don't understand that concept. I wish the Jets would have brought the team to Manhattan or back to Queens, but c'est la vie. It's better in HD anyways...maybe I'm just getting too old for some poeple's bullshit..I don't know. But I will agree that leaving early in close games is stupid. These Jets deserve better.
What??? Ok...I KNOW it was just against Detroit, but if everyone here wants to bitch about the crowds, than get off your butt and GO to the games!! Dont wanna hear about the season ticket holders, most of them sell thier tickets on E-Bay! I was at the Detroit game, have spent the last 2 days attempting to regain my voice!! So stop bitching and GO to the games than!!
Actually, Sweet Caroline is for the hicks. With a song selection like that, no wonder everyone decided to leave early.
That's what most of us have been saying. We did get off our but (and fly 1600 miles) we did buy tickets on ebay (Craigslist, actually), and that's why we are commenting on how the crowd isn't as fun as it used to be. I still had a great time, I don't want to discourage anyone from going. I'll do it everytime I can. We're just saying we used to be a more fun and rowdy bunch. I think we did get older as a fanbase and maybe we're not picking up the younger fans any more. Not that we should attract the really young fanbase and have to put up with all those "gameface" animations at the game.
Arriving late, leaving early, and other musings I have season tickets since 1981 and have been to over 200 Jet games between 1966 and last Sunday. While I know that doesn't make me an expert on fan behavior, it does give me the right to comment on some of the points that have been floating on this board. Leaving early Why would you ever leave early unless the game was CLEARLY over AND you had something else you had to do? I have had tickets since 1981 and have seen over 200 games and games are rarely over before the clock hits 0:00. Would you leave a movie ten minutes before the end to beat the crowd? Do you turn off you favorite TV show 5 minutes before the end to get to bed earlier. Do you stop reading a book with 50 pages to go because you thought of something else to do? All of these things make as much sense as leaving a Jet game early. If you leave a game early, you are not a good fan, period and you are cheating the Jets, the other fans, and yourself of the most important reason to go to a game - to cheer until the game is won or lost. I have never left a game early in my life unless I had somewhere important to go (a wedding ), I had my YOUNG kids with me and they had had enough (they were 2 and 4 years old and I left with 5 minutes to go in a game that was over) or it was kneel down time. Arriving late I have never missed a kickoff in my life and I tailgate before every game. I can't understand why any fan would not make it into the stadium for the beginning of the game. Other than the end of a close game, there is no more exciting time of the game than the anticipation just before kickoff. Every fan should be in their seats for the national anthem, the players coming out onto the field, the coin toss, and the kickoff. When you are in your seat for the start of the game, you show that you respect the Jets, the game, your fellow fans, and the privilege of having tickets to a game. Again, would you show up for a play or movie 30 minutes late? Would you start reading a book on page 100? The stands are about 1/3 full at the start of each home game and that is a disgrace. What is the explanation? Are you lazy? Is having that last beer or burger at the tailgate that important? Can't you time your tailgate and clean up so that you get your ass in the seat 10 minutes before the game starts??? If you can get to the parking lot 2 or 3 hours before the game, you certainly should be able to make it into your seat by 12:55 or 3:55 or 4:05 or 8:25 as the case may be. By the way, the same goes for the start of the second half. Haftime is 12 minutes - time it to be at your seat for the start of the half Standing Up on Third Down I am not a proponent of standing up for every third down on defense. First of all, the Jets cannot see you standing and standing does nothing to help the team. I yell, scream and make noise on third down because it is fun and it helps the defense, but I see no reason to stand, unless it is a crucial third or fourth down at the end of the game. They put seats in stadiums for a reason. If you want to stand, stand in the walkways to the concession area or in the last row of a section. This does not make me any less of a fan. I just find the up and down on third downs annoying, especially with this team when you end up standing 3 or 4 times every time the opponent has the ball because the defense can't get off the field. Plus, I bring my 12 year old son to the games and when everyone stands, he can't see unless he stands on the seat. This, you can understand, is a pain in the ass for him. Other Musings More Jet fans come to the games to drink than watch the game. I see many fans spending the entire game standing on line to buy beer and the bathroom. If you want to drink so much, stay home so you don't have to drive and there are no lines for beer or the bathroom and give your seat to someone who actually want to watch the Jets and not make the Busch family richer. These same people who drink 4-6 beers at $7.50 a pop ($30-45 a game) are the same people that complain about rising ticket prices, the possibility of PSLs , and how much more expensive eating at a restaurant would be compared to tailgating at the WSS. If you are returning to your seat during the game, show some courtesy and wait for the play to end before walking down the aisle to your. We fans don't want to see your back, we want to see the play. Don't throw things at other Jet fans during the game. That includes making paper airplanes from the minnie programs they hand out on the way in or objects at the guy wearing the other teams jersey. Neither I nor most other fans want to get hit with these planes or the object you throw at the fan of the other team. If you want to make paper airplanes, join the boy scouts. If you want to fight with people or throw objects, play paintball or something, but keep it out of the stadium. Jet fans like to think of themselves as passionate and knowledgeable. Instead, they come off as uncaring and ignorant. It really is a shame.
 "Standing Up on Third Down" I guess there is a big difference between college football and the NFL, in games I went to the entire student section STOOD for the entire game, and sat during breaks, I agree for the most part on leaving early, to not leave until the game is clearly over, if leave at all, as for getting there on time I wouldn't condemn everyone because there may be personal situations that cause people to arrive a little late, however I do agree that the stadium being half full at kickoff is pathetic
In the student section at PSU, it's impossible to sit down at all. The bleachers have little sectioned off seats, about 8 inches wide. No human ass could possibly fit in that seat, so you have no choice but to stand.
I thought he did a good job here explaining his points. However, the only one I can comment on is the stadium half empty at kick off because I don't go to games. It is kind of annoying seing our stands half empty at the beginning of games.
Why is everyone hating on Sweet Caroline? Personally, i love the song and its probably the loudest some people are the whole game. I think its a good song to play between the 3rd and the 4th. It gets you up. I much rather hear that than rap or anything like that. Who knows the words to rap?
This was a good post Joe. A lot of the points you have made I have spoken about to my football friends from time to time especially the leaving early part. As far as standing on third down I am always standing up on third down. I go to college at the U of Miami and they stand all game which pisses the hell out of me (well that and the fact that everyone gets piss drunk). So for me standing up on third down is not a big deal, plus it helps me yell louder. If someone asks me to sit down though I will always do so. Sometimes I will get told to sit down because I am too intense. I'm passionate and at the same time I'm considerate.
One thing that really bothered me was people left with 4 mins left just assuming it was all over. On top of that who leaves a win early anyway.
That is the thing I didn't get. I can see people leaving a game that is 40-0 or something like that but why do you leave in a win.
