We signed Franks because we wanted a second quality TE. The same reason we were flirting with Utecht. The whole tizzy chris is in, according to all the reports i've read, has to do with Franks' making more this year than him.

Do you really think the FO anticipated a situation and solved it prior to it even existing? Tanny doesn't drive a DeLorean and the nickname's Mangenius, not Manostradamus:wink:

We'll just throw the ball to someone else if necessary. Not nearly as crucial as Kendall was to the O-line.

As others have noted, the only reason Franks earns more than Baker this year is that Baker took the advance last year - they actually earn exactly the same salary.

Mark Cannizzaro is such a worthless slob. This is all re-hashed nonsense during the no-news off-season so he thought he would re-report things like this to piss off fans on both side of the fence. Go work on your neck-brasssiere, Mark, you might have an ESPN appearance coming up.

Yeah, but you've got to wrap your head around the Baker mentality to "understand" why he's so upset.

The only reason he took the advance last year was to "help the team out," so it really doesn't count. Besides, that was last year's money, so it counts even less. What counts is this year's money, which is less than Franks. Any Mofo can see that.

I was wrong about sitting these players down from the outset of their careers and giving them all a crash course on Contract Law 101. The time would be better spent giving them a course on 4th Grade math instead.

    Hmmm

If Jets management really did promise him more money, he then has one of his best years and they then suddenly say f off when he asks for what the promised, then hell I'd be pissed too. We'll never know the real deal, but seems strange that a guy who has been a team player is suddenly barking so loud. They should toss him a bone if they did promise him something because he wouldn't be bad to keep around no matter how many "supposed" backups we have.

C'mon Jeff, you don't think I know that already...give me some credit. I have probably posted that very fact on this very board more than anyone else as correcting people's misunderstandings through bogus reporting has been one of my pet projects...just look at my sig.

The post I made was in response to the fact that some people here actually think that Keller and Franks were direct results of Baker's contract gripes. I contend that is not the case. Now, you can better understand my post.

I can almost guarantee you that Mangini and Tannenbaum are much more astute than you give them credit for and don't make it a habit of walking around verbally "promising" players more money.

This is the problem, and you are unfortunately buying into this f*cking hogwash just like many others, including all the @sshole beat reporters who need a storyline because things are so slow and who therefore need to pump up such gibberish and give guys like Baker, Coles and Kendall a stage from which to spew nonsense.

It's not totally your fault... you're reading into it what's been printed by these half-ass reporters looking for something... anything... to "report" on. So they give these guys audience and the guys take license to then distort the real truth as much as they need to to garner some sort of (in their minds) sympathy for their cause.

I no sooner buy into Mangini or Tannenbaum or anyone else in the organization walking around casually dropping hints of more money than the man in the moon. In fact, I'm sure they take special precautions to guard against saying something that could later be misconstrued as having dangled a financial carrot that they had no intention of following through on.

Like I say, if these dunderheads want to take a statement like, "Well Chris, you've had a good year and we're certainly going to evaluate this" as meaning, "Yeah, I'm definitely promising you a whole shitload more money next year, Chris," then that's their fault.

I swear, it's getting to the point where management should tighten the policy of talking to players AT ALL about future contract negotiations. Don't even get engaged. If a player as much as mentions next year and his contract coming due, management should just say, "I'm not allowed to talk about that at this time, Chris." Case closed.

"Well... what do you mean? Don't you think I deserve more money next year, coach?"

"Money ain't my department, Chris, and you Tanny and I don't discuss that until the time comes anyway."

Why are you killing the messenger? Mini camp is this week and this is where the story could start to take shape, so why not cover it?

If he has something new to report, that would be nice. All he's trying to do is stir the hornet's nest. Typical Cannizzaro.

Anyone need a Defensive Coordinator in '09?

I personally think this is more of a respect issue. I think there is more to the story then what is being lead on. You got to treat your players right, clearly a misunderstanding somewhere, but still. I find it hard to believe that there are so many complaints from all these Jets players for no reason, other then to complain. I don't buy it.

I think there is an accidental misleading addiction between the FO and these players.

EXACTLY!!!!!.....I used to be a Big Chris Baker Fan but I'm tired of hearing these clowns "SPEAK THEIR MIND"...This dude is above average at best...he signed the contract , now he needs to fulfill it........I say cut him now and let's not have to deal with the distraction in training camp. And IF we do..............It'll be damn interesting to see if ANY team steps up to beg this guy to sign him for what he's looking for.......I don't think he'll find any takers....as many of you have said, He's talking his way right out of the league

right, giving him the opportunity to shop around then he might just keep his mouth shut, i doubt he'd have any takers matching his current contract with the jets. if he does'nt want to retire as a jet, see ya!

Contracts don't really mean anything anymore, do they? I mean, the original point of a contract is to, say, come to terms between one party and another regarding the official amount of money, etc owed to a person for services rendered. Sure, renegotiating contracts is fun! Why not? What I don't get is why players sign contracts in the first place, then. The NFL should crack down on this behavior, because, frankly, I'm sick of it. Either sign the contract or don't. Or, have incentives that allow a player to get paid more. Oh wait- they already do.

If free-wheeling renegotiating contracts becomes the order of the day in the NFL, then this type of hold-out behavior will, in general, only increase.

Baker's never made a Pro Bowl. Take the money, Chris, and just play, please. Or don't and leave.

Cut Baker; let him bitch and moan and catch 30 passes a year for 2 TD's for another franchise.

Where does Baker get his sense of entitlement? He sucks, plus the team was 4-12 last year. And he even admits he "took more money (1 Mill) up front" last season. How is that a "sacrifice?"

At least Chad Johnson is a superstar...

This is good in theory. but flip it, if a player signs a contract management should not be able to cut a player that has signed a contract. That is where the main issue is when it comes to the NFL. Contracts are not guaranteed like in other sports. Management wants you to fulfill the obligation of your contract but can kick your ass to the curb when they want to. In the middle of a contract.
