Considering we have the least amount of cap space in the league and Geno as our #1 QB, sure why not? Of course, the offseason is far from over, and there are a bunch of things that can happen between now and then. Considering Macc's track record has been good so far, I trust him to get us out of it intact. And it's mostly a one year thing; our cap opens up next year.
we're not in cap hell because A) we get instant relief next year and B) we can have a pretty damn competitive team this year
Sp, NFLPA says that we have 564k cap space, but I am not sure if Jeremy Ross' salary included in that, Overthecap says 20k, I believe last one is the correct. So, Brick's retirement freed up 9.1M, Clady will count 6M against the cap, so we have ~3.1M.
Lol @ the cap hell thing. It's pretty normal to not have a lot of cap space after splurging the year before. Not a hard concept. Tannenbaum never put us in cap hell and John Idzik didn't do anything other than cut 5-6 aging starters to give us room, and then magically we had all this cap space and he just didn't do anything with it, so Macc did.
the amount of cap space, in a vacuum, is completely irrelevant. it needs to be taken in context with pending free agents, players likely to be cut/retire/replaced, and players whose contracts need long term restructuring. not that we are in cap hell, we arent, but its not like we also have a spoil of riches coming. especially with a team full of 30+ year olds at major impact positions who will need to soon be replaced
idzik was on a 3 year plan. last year was the season he was going to go after free agents. but he was fired in year 2 of a 3 year plan his owner publically signed off on. im not sad to see idzik go, because he couldnt draft worth a lick, and thats the most important aspect of a GM in the NFL. but as far as FA goes, he never got his chance
JJ you got a good point in regards to next years cap I took a closer look and did some calculations on this boring Sunday yes we've got 44 mil in space next season BUT ... Unless Petty is our guy we will have to sign a QB say around 10 mil if we franchise Mo again (18M) and we would either sign Clady or have to replace him (10M) that already is 38 mil ... we could always cut Revis and save 15 mil but yea it looks nice at 60 mil total but we would have to re up our guys or replace em etc ...
I still think Mo gets traded and we upgrade our OL and OLB since we're set on the DL on the other hand if we lock Mo up long term I'm ok with letting Sheldon walk ... one thing's for sure we can NOT lose both ...
We also have a team with a short window and it is def a win now team.Which is why we need Fitzpatrick back
Doesn't seem like anybody is beating our door down to get mo, any trade of him now would probably be a bad trade. They know we probably won't franchise him again so why trade for him when you might be able to pick him up off the street? I just hope we find a way to sign him to a new deal.
There is a reason that teams trade for players rather than wait until they hit the market...when you wait until a player becomes a free agent you are bidding against every other team in the league and there is no way to guarantee that you will get that particular player. It is understandable that a team will not give value as if they have Mo under contract for the next 5 years, but if they want to guarantee he is on their roster (not to mention get use out of him for this year) a team will give up some value to get him. A team that really covets him is taking a big change if they say to themselves "we will just sign him when he becomes a free agent, unless they have illegal inside information.
