it seems that Mattison's schemes aren't working. Rex was the most impactful coordinator Baltimore ever had. Nolan and Lewis were replaceable, but Rex seemed to be special. They still have better players. HOF players... but the schemes aren't maximizing the skills. They are playing base formations and the attack that Rex implemented just isn't there. I feel bad for them in a way. I like that team. Lewis, Flacco, Reed, and coach Harbaugh are easy to root for.
bodes well for the future. Now if Schottenhiemer would just call a game like a regular human and not some benzadryne addled psycho, we might be somewhere.
i take a rare stand with that opinion. I don't care about the murder trial and everything else. His passion on a football field is unmatched, and his leadership is second to none. We won't see another linebacker like him for a long, long time. I love his pregame huddles and what he brings to a defense. Its beautiful.
Turnovers and ST's have given up 7 TD's, our defense has given up TD's. That's pretty crazy..... They can only get better as they get more comfortable with the system. Rex said now that certain players have experience with the system they should start making big plays, referring to Defensive TD's, and I think he meant Kerry Rhodes. Once he learns where every player is and will be he can jump the ball and get some picks.
Generally, it is a good sign that things should improve and wins will come. However, leading the league in defense by yardage is a little misleading. We are 17th in interceptions, and 23rd in forced fumbles, and 27th in sacks......doesn't sound like the best defense in the league to me.
Who gives a shit what our D is ranked. It's nice to see and it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy but we're 4-4 and those are the only numbers that matter in the end. I would take a #15 ranked D and a 6-2 record.
I'm with ya htere. Off feild things aside, Lweis was been one of the best Linebackers in the NFL for a decade now and is a monster of a personality on the feild. That man is the true start of the team in Baltimore and the city eats it up every week.
I am under the impression that the points our defense has let up equals 11.5 / game. 9 TD's + the field goals.
I agree with this entirely. The problem with our way of thinking though is that the Jets still really put themselves in a hole by losing twice to the Fins. If that 4th loss had come to any other team (including NE, except BUF) then the Jets would still be in great shape... but two losses to MIA puts the Jets back on their heels in a bad way. I think any realistic observer of the Jets realizes that at this point that the Jets are definitely a team that's on the rise and going places, it just might not be this year. Still, I'd bet anything the second half of this season is going to be a blast to watch.
He is a great player. But I read an article about him where he was basically comparing himself to Jesus. The guy said something about he blesses everyone he meets. Way over the top. I think there are a few screws loose in his head.
Top D Top in rushing and 4 and 4 with a 1 and 3 record in the division in a pretty weak division. It doesn't get anymore SOJ than that.
Lewis is 34, Gregg is 33, Pryce is 34, Rolle is 33 and Reed is 31. Having your mainstays on defense all aging into the twilight zone at the same time is a really bad thing. The two primetime guys in that defense were Scott and Leonhard and they're both in NY now. I think I underestimated how much of a hit their defense would take this season. I figured they'd go from great to above average and instead they fell through to poor.
I am not sure about your analysis. The nfl.com stats show the Jets giving up a total of 134 points, with the D giving up a total of 4 rushing td's and 5 passing, which is nine, and 6 on a combo of kick returns, interceptions and fumble returns. That site also shows the points per game average to be 16.8, so I think that includes points given up by the O and ST. A purely defensive stat would not include those other points, imo. Of course it wouldn't. Interesting that I see only one other team having given up 3 touchdowns on fumble recoveries, that being the Rams. In fact only four teams have given up two. Stats don't always lie - giving up a touchdown on a fumble recovery will bite you in the ass, alrighty.
You are absolutely right. He gave away 2 games singlehandedly. Plus special teams gave away a game, and Sanchez still had a chance to win it in the end, but failed. We may be #1 in defense, but when your passing game and special teams give up points and games, there is not much your defense can do - you will not go far. QB is still the most important player on the team. We can easily be 7-1 right now if just our QB delivered when we needed it the most. Against NO and Buffalo he simply gave them games, and even against Miami in NJ, if he could just get us in the end zone on the last possession, we win in spite of special teams failures. Like I said, there is a reason why QB position is most important. If Sanchez did just a little better against Buffalo and finished that drive against Miami, we lead the division.
