No shit, it can happen. Folk could also miss a 20 yard field goal and Campbell would still be kneeling. Again, it's about percentages. Scenario 2 is clearly the more likely of the two choices. We made plenty of mistakes tonight, but this wasn't one of them.
What are the percentages Folk misses a 20 yard FG, out of curiosity, since you're playing the percentage game???? Hey, we agree to disagree, but I would think any fan would want to give their team a chance to extend the game regardless. Playing your percentage game, making the FG is a whole hell of a lot surer than going for it on 4th and 2. A on-sides kick is not a certainty by any stretch of the imagination. But, kicking an onsides kick down 3 or 7 still keeps you in the game.
Any 12 year old Madden player will tell you that you kick it on first down and take your chances onsiding it....you don't even take it to 4th down.
Kick the field goal and get the onside, I mean we do have Westhoff the guy who invented the damn thing.
Seriously? i have never played Madden in my life, sorry I deal with common sense. And thank you cakes. I thought it was common sense to extend a game. On 4th down. Guess I didn't have my PlayStation plugged in.
I disagree, If we get the TD there wed have time, if we got the ball back, to set up for a field goal. If we went for a FG having to get a TD in less than a minute would be alot tougher.
No obviously not, but hindsight is 20/20. If we went for the FG and then didn't get a TD because we got the ball back and were in FG range but we couldn't score a TD Im sure PLENTY would say that we made the wrong choice. My personal opinion is it was the right call to go for a TD and try and get the ball back so our Offense could work with about 40 seconds to get to about the 35 and in, just like we have plenty of times the past seasons to tie or win the game.
Did you read the thread? Hindsight is not 20/20. I didn't like the call/play BEFORE it happened. I've pointed this out, 3rd time, now.
Ingersoll...I see you in the thread. You're one of the Raiders fans I respected this week. What you say?
They just decided that scoring a TD from 2 yards out on 4th down, then getting an onside kick and only having to kick a FG to tie it was a higher percentage than kicking a FG, having to get an onside kick, then drive for a TD again. I'm not going to blame them for this call, it was an extremely low chance of coming back either way.
Just to note, there was :49 left on the clock when the Raiders snapped the ball for the 1st kneel down. So, I'm sticking with my OP. You have to extend the game. They would have been trying an onsides kick with something like 35 seconds left. That's assuming it would have taken about 20 seconds to get the kick team personnel on the kick through the uprights after the 3rd down play. It's all far fetched, regardless, but I would always lean towards what I would think to be conventional wisdom and extend the game. I've said it a bunch of times, scoring 7 or 3 makes no difference to me when it's a 2 score game.
Theres no guarantee the Jets would be able to drive down the field again for a TD. It was too close not to go for it. I agree with the call. We were just a yard short.
I would have went for the TD on fourth. The chances of them getting the on-side kick and then scoring a td with no timeouts is almost nill. Getting the on-side kick and then kicking a FG, much more feasable. The play that really screwed the drive was the third down play. Worse was Wischusen on the radio. He had him definitely in for a TD, was like, oh i don't know why they are going replay, he's clearly in. Then, the big, oh, I didn't see this part of the play. Awful when the announcers do that and you are listening on radio.
I meant to say our 4th down effort was a yard short. We may never reach anywhere close to that goal line again had we went for the FG.
At the time I wanted them to kick the field goal to give themselves a chance but you can't really say definitively which call was right after the fact. Besides.. we're talking about a 10 point game with less than a minute on the clock and no time outs. Plus you're banking on an onside kick recovery. Kinda grasping at straws here.
