I don't know who called OLB a desperate need, but I didn't. It's just an area we need to improve upon. We haven't gotten nearly enough pressure from the outside (especially when we aren't blitzing).

    1. He's sniffed some, just hasn't sacked them. It is embarrassing.

    2. He was drafted to be a 3-4 OLB. That requires more than just pass rushing abilities. If it was just that, I'm sure he'd see the field more. Unfortunately, the game is bigger than that.

Is what I'm saying here really that hard? We'd still take the hit in the next capped season. It's written down somewhere.

They'd still end up paying him...good money too...and he'd probably be signed by someone else too.

    Look up for big news.

We're going to be living with Gholston, and I bet he turns out to at least be workable...

I'll answer everything rather than quoting 8 posts.

The DL is getting old. I know, but like I've said, it can be replenished later in the draft, or OLB can be had later. And by later I mean on friday not thursday in april.

Thomas isn't getting younger and he isn't quality. Jarrett Johnson is better and they are almost the same age. The OLB depth is terrible. Blind optimism on Gholston doesn't mean anything. I'm using what I've seen from him - the ability to hold an edge every now and then, get no push on the pocket, zero instincts, and play mediocre special teams... fucking special teams.

This team isn't built to rush the passer and pass the ball. But it does need to rush the elite teams better. It will never be a finesse team, that's the best part. It can have the best of both worlds. An OLB in the 3-4 is how its done... one that opposing OCs hate.

The Steelers and Pats always put the money on the front 3, but they had the edge rushers to finish the job. Like I said, its backwards and forwards with the drafting of the defensive players.

DeVito is a DE, not a NT in the Gregg kind of way. He might replace Douglas, but I don't know. The money is tied up due to one douchebag who can't beat 3rd string LTs. Thankfully an uncapped year and news reports have said that this is the last year for Gholston to prove something before he goes bye bye this year.

Gholston has single handedly fucked up the future of the OLB position and that's why its being discussed in this offseason. If he was twice as good as he is now it wouldn't be an issue. Fucking pussy that he is.

The funny thing about the Pats - they had Warren, Wilfork, and Seymour for all four SBs.... but they haven't been the same team without McGinest, when they won their 1st three.

    6th overall for "workable"

stop bullshitting. I won't fall for it.

    You know he's awful.

I hope he gets signed to a 4-3 team.... where he fucking belongs.

Well if "Sam" from Iggles Blog is correct and the salary cap comes back then you're right it makes no sense to cut him. Obviously everything I said is based on saving money. This is the first I've heard of this, and I'd like to find a more reliable source than Sam.

TheJetsBlog.com has made plenty of entries and quoted Tanny saying "this is a big year for Vernon"

meaning - just convince the OL your a football player, or we cut you.

Yea...this has to be annoying but it's easier to organize.

So can OLB. In fact, considering that we have 4 large contracts at LB and one more (Harris) on the way, it's probably better to go OLB later.

Thomas and Johnson are the same player...Not a ton of sacks but solid play and good against the run. It's quality depth, and they can start if you let them. Obviously, they're both upgradable...we have Gholston...they have Kruger.

Blind hatred for Gholston means nothing either. I'm not trying to offer blind optimism, and my optimism is only blind if you ignore everything I say except the supposedly crazy part where I say he can be a good player. I've given many reasons why I think Gholston can be a solid starter when they ask him to, and I think it's coming sooner rather than later. When I saw him start I saw him hold his edge, occupy opposition's blockers, and even break through a couple times (no sacks, of course)....but those little good things keep getting ignored and there's nothing I can really do to help that.

We got beat by Peyton Manning...that loss is really causing everyone to forget how good the D was the other 17 games. Our pass rush already improves getting Jenkins back...it's not about a single guy and even if it is, that single guy doesn't HAVE to be an OLB.

And those edge rushers had the DL to free them up...It's not like Harrison or Vrabel were some special talents...they "sucked" for years...If you invest in a DL then you're investing into the biggest, most important part of your D. Just like investing in the OL for the offense...if you understand what I'm saying there you understand everything I'm saying.

DeVito's a swing lineman and I prefer him there over him starting anywhere.

No, it's percieved that Gholston has fucked up OLB. All he's done is develop at a slow enough pace that we really question it, which is fine because that gives us something to talk about if we choose to talk about football.

I guess it would suck if you choose to think about it like that...There's got to be some questions in the offseason.

That's because Bruschi and Vrabel also got old...then Seymour got older and missed alot of games...and then it takes a minute or two to replenish the stock at OLB in a 3-4 because you're developing former college DEs. It shouldn't take that long soon enough now that prospects are expecting getting looked at as a DE or a LB, but for then and even now it's an issue...

Obviously it takes good OLBs to have a good 3-4, but there's no denying that having a great DL helps the 3-4 LBs play up. It's true of any front 7...That D was totally built on the DL...it only took off once Seymour was drafted and played/started as a DE/DT/NT...all 3 are top 20 picks...Wilfork was considered a top 10 talent in '04 (a loaded draft)....that was a gift and then some.

    Gholston is bad.

its not just Peyton, its Brees, its not going 2-4 against the division etc.

Its planning ahead for the age that's going to plague this defense in two years.

I've said 3 times the DL or OLB can be the 2nd round pick. Its backwards and forwards, but both need to be addressed.

And at 24 entering his 3rd year in the league being coached by two top defensive coaches that might change.

All I'm saying is that with the money we have at OLB, the age of our DL, and the backup talent at either position...I'd much rather throw more money at DL. We can easily pick up a decent developmental OLB prospect in the 5th...we need him far less than we need a starting type DE.

So basically you're admitting that we're wasting money on Vernon Gholston?

The faster we get rid of him, the better the future of this team gets.

We drafted him to be a pass-rusher but he doesn't have the ability to be a great pass-rusher in the NFL because he isn't quick or agile enough. So now we still need an OLB who can pass-rush, along with all our other needs.. so yeah, he fucked us over.

As long as OLB is addressed I don't care when it is. 1st, 2nd, trade up, etc. If its a 5th rounder he better be a sleeper or someone who shouldn't have dropped and did and now everyone regrets it.... like Tom Brady.

    DL is the same way.

But - if there is a CB who is sitting there, begging to become a Jet, take him. Revis needs a friend.

He'll probably show up in a few minutes after taking a while to think of something incredibly intelligent to say, and bash me for being the "only one that cares".

Agreed. I posted on this thought a few weeks ago which I'll just paste here:
As for JLfDWare's o.p -- while Pace is a good pass-rusher, there's no way you can put him on Suggs' level right now; he just doesn't attack the passing game with the same speed and ferocity that Suggs does (in fact, not many players do, and that's why Suggs is who he is).

Furthermore, Gholston looks like complete garbage, and this will be his last year to prove he has an NFL career with the Jets. Thomas is meh.

So although pass-rusher isn't an 'immediate need', both Gholston and Thomas can be upgraded, and if someone is available in the draft that is better than them, there's no reason to ignore that guy.

Having said that, I still stand by my belief that the DL should be improved before anything else. Then CB and/or OLB (just in terms of Defensive needs).

You're fucking disgusting. Get a fuckin life...It was posted twice because it's a good fucking thread.

I'm sorry my ideas conflict with your so much that your backwards ass can only resort to trolling my posts and threads as a form of retort. BAHAHAHAHAH my balls.

I find it sadder that you actually believe this dipshit. You're fuckin smarter than that...

Easy there DWare...don't get so worked up.

I like how you edited: "Go fuck yourself" out of your post - probably a smart move.
