Oh, and he won't name his QB for next week either. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/sports/125412682788870.xml&coll=2
Mangini: Worst coaching hire ever? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/joe_posnanski/09/29/mangini/index.html?eref=sihp
Basically, his criterion comes down to the fact that Mangini had just been fired. I agree that that was part of why the hire was so surprising, but you can't then dismiss Kotite, which is the same thing. Also, his reasons about Zorn and Cable aren't really reasons at all. There are three people currently in the league (Zorn, Mangini, and Cable) who are clearly in the "WTF?" category, and I don't think Mangini is necessarily number 1 on that list.
Good article but I would disagree with him that Kotite was a much worse hire. At least Mangini has shown that he could spot talent...Leon, Mangold, Brick, and Revis. Mangini reminds me of a young Mike Shanahan except he can't coach a lick.
I'll throw Oakland out because they are a trainwreck but Zorn is in there. He may beat Mangini because at least Mangini had the playoff season... there were alot of good candidates including the guy who is now the coach of the Jets. I just think the way Snyder is the only guys who are gonna coach for him are new guys looking for their first gig. Not for anything but it's hard to throw Morris in there after 3 games. His team is awful, he seems like a likable guy and seems to be a brilliant mind he just ha sno talent.
Kotite was a worse hire! But for Cleveland this guy may be right! I don't think Mangini was a bad hire for us, he did not work out but I do think we have better talent because he was here. And now that they are out from under his thumb you can see the talent paying off because it is used properly.
Mangini might be a a douche but he did help put together a solid team for us and send us off in the right direction. God only knows what he's doing with the QB situation in Cleveland, but Kotite was a much worse hire for us than Mangini was for the Browns.
Still my favorite thing about the Kotite hire--we fired Pete Carroll who had lost five straight to hire Kotite who had lost seven straight. Rex needs just one more win to equal Kotite's total for two seasons.
Zorn may be in over his head, but he was an accomplished assistant when he got the Redskins job. Matt Hasselbeck credits him with turning his career around, and when the Seahawks were in the Super Bowl Zorn was getting a ton of buzz. You can't call him the worst hire in the history of the NFL. Rod Marinelli should be a factor in this conversation. I mean, he did lead a team to 0-16. Mangini is horrible, but there's no way to trump Richie Kotite. We're talking about a guy who went for 2 while down 11 points because rain had smeared his chart and he had no idea what to do. And this happened before the Jets hired him!
 A lot of coaches were a disaster when they first put in the two point conversion. One of Kotite's four wins with us was because Don Shula went for one to go up 15-9 and Bubby Brister's Jets came back to beat them 16-15.
while Kotite and Mangini and clearly comparable in the situations surrounding their hirings, as the article points out, at least Kotite had a winning record so there was at least the illusion that he may be a good coach. Mangini is the same as Kotite but had a losing record as a coach, making his hire with the Browns far worse. saying otherwise is just fanbole.
Mangini can become Kotite because Kotite went to the playoffs with the Eagles, collapsed the following year and then got a job immediately with the Jets. Same can happen with Mangini. He's proving me right so far. Browns kotite.
Disagree. Mangini had two out of three winning seasons. We aquired most of our current talent while he was here.... He isn't in the same boat as those other bad hires he mentioned. Yeah the Browns look awful right now but I think they'd be 0-3 regardless of who was coaching them. They are just awful.
