It happens almost every year. People were calling Chris Long a bust but I'm sure they don't remember saying that now. And I'm not saying Wilson will break out, but one and even two years just isn't enough time to get a true evaluation in most cases. On the flip side, Michael Clayton looked like a Boldin clone after his rookie year. And now he's FA fodder.
I remember watching Chris Long struggle on a shit front 4, and now he's becoming a game changer. Its about patience, and as long as a player works his ass off, he's going to contribute.
Us Jet fans have been spoiled of the last handful of years because to quick impact rooks. Even though I am a little disappointed most of our rookies haven't done much, it's hard to get PT when you have a deep team like we have. OP, do you think all fullbacks are gimmicks or just Connor? Either way, you're wrong.
McKnight and Conner have been productive special teams players, which is good for 4th and 5th round picks as rookies. Vlad was always a project who wasn't expected to start this year. Callahan is grooming him, hopefully as our future RT. The only one that really concerns me at this point is our first round pick, Kyle Wilson. No, I don't expect him to start over Revis or Cromartie, but he isn't even above Drew fucking Coleman on the depth chart yet. I think Cole is even above him on the depth chart. I don't know what he's doing wrong that he can't beat out those two, but to me it's alarming even if it is his rookie season. To make matters worse, he was supposed to be some bad ass punt returner and he couldn't even hold onto a part time role in that position when our #1 punt returner got injured for the season. No opposing QB's are crying about Kyle Wilson.
I still think the Revis holdout hurt Kyle's development more than people think. Not only could he have rep'd at the nickel spot like he was supposed to all camp, but he would have had Revis working with him every day on finding the ball. It's been a disappointing year for him, no doubt, especially when you see what McCourty's been doing in New England. But it's way too early to write him off.
I can't believe this turned into a Wilson flame fest. Again, the haters bought into Rex's fluff that Wilson was All-World. But here's the reality, even Revis (yes even Revis was a rookie too) got burned terribly his rookie season. This isn't to say Wilson will be Revis, but it's saying that even the best in the league have a learning curve. I guess I'm just disappointed because one of the Jets' biggest exploits is being gashed up the center by the TE or slot receiver. Wilson was supposed to be the solution to that problem and it really has not worked out.
The problem I have with Wilson is that he's barely seeing the field. Scrubs are higher on the depth chart than him. I don't expect him to be great in his rookie season, but I do expect a first round pick to get playing time over Drew Coleman and Marqious(sp) Cole. He's at the end of his rookie season. He should be playing over those guys. And I'm hardly a hater, I want the kid to do well. Are you going to turn and look the other way and pretend like this is par for the course for a 1st round pick?
Hard Knocks: "Hey, did you see the termainator on that play, he kicked some ass." That basically was his season.
Or the key block on Greene's first run TD. He definitely has had others, that is just the first one that comes to mind. You only watched hard knocks I guess.... Not the actual season.
TGG is the world of extremes. If you say Wilson had a disappointing rookie year, then you must be a hater with no patience already calling him a bust who will never be any good. For whatever reason it can't just be that he had disappointing rookie season.
Exactly. There's a lot of shades of grey. If you say Wilson hasn't had a disappointing rookie season, you're being ignorant. Doesn't mean he's a bust long-term. But when the cornerback taken one spot ahead of him by your biggest rival is the AFC rookie of the year, it stings when your guy can't get on the field at a position where Drew Coleman and Marquice Cole are seeing a lot of time.
McCourty was taken two spots ahead of Kyle Wilson. We have never had a chance at him, so I don't get why people are upset about that. Have you seen Kareem Jackson play? Houston selected him over Kyle Wilson and Devin McCourty. Jackson has had an awful season. Sure, he's got a few interceptions and plenty of pass deflections...but those stats don't tell the whole story. He's been burned all season long and it's not because he doesn't have the talent to defend these guys. It's because he's not ready. The Saints drafted Patrick "Toast" Robinson with the 32nd overall pick. He's been awful so far.
I'm only upset about that because it shows a guy drafted in the same area for our biggest rival competing and beating us. I'm still a Wilson believer, but my faith takes a hit when he can rarely get on the field in our secondary. He needs time, but this isn't the start you wanted for for him. Or for McKnight, though he's made strides since training camp. Conner is who we thought he was. Good points about Jackson and Robinson. I always thought Wilson and McCourty were better, but then you also have guys like Alterraun Verner and Kyle Arrington who have been productive as late round picks. I know we have a tough secondary to crack, but he was toast when he played early in the year, and now he can't get on the field. I'm sure the former is the reason for the latter, but it's not like we couldn't use another cornerback with his talents. Hopefully, with experience he learns how to get his head around and not get burned. He's quick enough and a good enough athlete, he just needs experience. My biggest point in this thread is that when you have a 4-man draft class a year after a 3-man draft class, you're not going to get many players stepping up, even in depth roles. And when that happens, your team as a whole is going to get older. Then again, I guess we did get Jarron Gilbert, a guy a number of us, including myself, wanted last season.
Kyle Arrington isn't a rookie and he was a UDFA last season. He's a product of great coaching in New England. I don't think he's a very good player and that was obvious early in the season when the Patriots' pass defense was struggling. ...but Belichick has always had success with plugging random players into his defense. Guys like Fletcher, Banta-Cain, Sanders, and Ninkovich are perfect examples of that. Alterraun Verner was a steal. I have no idea how he fell to the fourth round. Dewayne Walker is THE best defensive backs coach in all of college football. He recruited Verner and coached him for three years before he left to become a head coach at New Mexico State. If we end up losing Cromartie somehow, I'd love for the Jets to take a shot on NMSU corner Davon House in the second or third round.
I know this guy isn't exactly a rookie, but Josh Mauga was a hell of a pickup. He's made a lot of great special teams tackles.
I'm only slightly disappointed with Wilson. I have faith that he will come along tho. I also said the same thing about Gholston Conner is far from a gimmick. That kid is tough he will be a starter.
This reminds me - last week, I officially updated my files and declared Dewayne Robertson a bust. . . . . sometimes I get so wrapped up in other business, I forget small details.
I remember Gregg Williams saying he doesn't trust him at all about a week into TC. I remember when they made that pick, I laughed at them.
Every time a ball is kicked, there is a 95% chance he's going to tackle the returner. And his tackles are usually textbook. I'm impressed with him.
I would draft House on his name alone. A CB with the name House is a recipe for awesomeness. So many puns.
