The point is... is he worth a second round pick? HEEEEELLLLL No. Plus that 10 mil can do some damage. If it is actually back loaded as you continue to reiderate, will they keep him? or will they cut him before he starts making some major money. And if they do, then they'll have to pay that 10 million in a matter of 3 years or so. And you said that he would become a troy brown kind of player. And they kept troy brown for years and years to come until he was like 80. So if he ends up being like troy brown they'll keep him for an extended period of time and he'll see the end of that backloaded contract. Your arguments have many contradictions in them. I respect the fact that you recognized that it may be a backloaded contract, but you have to also think about that and the amount of money he would get in the end when you make some of your arguments.

They can use one first round pick and split it into two second rounders. They have extra mid rounders from Adam V walking. Outside of the top tier of recievers, The mid to first rounders in the first round have the same projected talent level as the guys in the second round. The draft is loaded with wr talent.

Comparing Clements does everything for my argument. The same reason Mike Young just got 80 million bucks from the Rangers. He is not worth that, the market allowed him to get it. Clements set the market. You hate Samuel because he trashed all hope of us in that final playoff game. He had 10 picks in the regular season, had a great playoff run, and was the reason the pats won several games dyring the year. He would get big money, and there is a team that would pay him. My point was they got him for 7 million. He would have gotten more then that as a fa, there is no doubt.

You have no idea what "contract" the patriots are giving Welker. Right now it is a backloaded pill offer. Honestly, most nfl people do not agree with your assesment of Welker. Most see him as a steal. 68 receptions and 700 yards in Miami is a player with upside. He was catching balls from Joey Harrington, lol. His situation was very bad out there.Welker also had 81 touches on kick returns last year. He will exel in a good system with a good qb. They do not want him to be a wr "threat" They want a guy with a Troy Brown skill set. This guy is Troy Brown when he was 25. You will have no idea about the contract until the gaurenteed money is announced. Right now it is a backloaded offer meant to keep the dolphins from matching. He will not see anything close to 38 million. They have two first round picks to play with. Belidick has prob watched about 100 hours of film on this guy from playing them. I would think he can evaluate talent, he is one of the greatest coaches ever. He might be a perfect fit for there system.

Stop saying woulda coulda shooulda.... People could say the only reason we where 10 and 6 was due to a cake walk schedule. Look at the colts, they won the superbowl with the 5th worst defense in nfl history. Woulda coulda shouldas dont mean anything.

If you actually watched the games, you would see that many of his interceptions were thrown right at him and were caused by good pressure up front. He's also a rather sub par tackler. there's no way he would've gotten anywhere NEAR what clements would have gotten. That doesn't set the market for CB's considering that was just ridiculous. It's not like teams would go "wow this guy got a ridiculous amount of money so i'm gonna seriously overspend for a guy that had only one good year so far as opposed to 2 or 3".

funny how you say they don't mean anything when one of you're arguments was that the pats WOULDA made the Sb if blah blah blah happened.

yes, the Pats are getting more powerful every moment. at this rate, by the time the season starts they will be so powerful that their center of gravity will trap light, collapsing the world around it and turning our planet in to a black hole. they must be stopped! the only way to stop them is for the Jets to sign a FA...any FA! Jets, help us, you are our only chance!

I watched all the games. My original argument was that he would have gotten more then 7 mill, which he would have. If you think Samuel would not have been a coveted fe, imo you are mistaken.

You are taking the "woulda coulda shoulda" comment out of context. I was answering a totally different question.

Sorry if I did not clarify... Not the best writer!

LOL. The Pats are getting stronger every second by giving up a first day pick for a glorified return man? Welker is a threat, but anytime you see the Pats overpaying for someone doesn't make them stronger. It is a sign of desperation at the wide receiver position.

Once again, you have no idea how much money they are paying him. A posien pill contract is so backloaded with dead cash, and options that will never have tobe picked up,it is not even funny. They have two first round picks in a draft that is the deepest in wr's in years. Welker brings the skill set of a young Troy Brown ( who is retiring) They are picking him up for his versatility, special teams ability and to work in the slot. This is not there wr pick up we are waiting to see.

Having 29 million in cap space and adressing in house needs is not desperation. Btw, they still have over 9 million left under the cap.

Please indicate in my post where I mentioned money. The mere fact that they met the second round tender means they overpayed for him. Welker is not Troy Brown, he only wishes he was.

neither do you...how do you know its a backloaded contract? what do you think 10 million guaranteed means? either way they are paying too much for a return man which may not having much bearing on any game...not to mention a 2nd rounder...that was my comic relief of the week

Not really imo. First off, I am sorry if I came of like a dick. They can split one of the two first round picks into two second round picks. They have some extra mid rounders. They need a replacment for Troy Brown. They basically have an extra pick due to the two first round draft picks. They know what they are getting with Welker. They watch hours apon hours of film on him. He has been in the leauge for two years and has obvious upside. He brings the skill set of a young Troy Brown. Everything I have read on espn has welker as a steal for a second rounder. Watching him play I think a team with the flexability of 2 first rounders in a draft where wr's are all over the place it is a smart move. He is perfect for that system, imo.

That figure is pure speculation! At this point this is a speculated offer, They have not signed anything.Until you see the offical contract you cannot say it is overpaying. This is done with rfa all the time! Look at the Hutchinson deal. There is no way in gods green earth this dude is getting anywhere close to 35 million bucks.

Most of you guys are acting like the patriots have no idea what they are doing. I am not going to try and be unbiased, it is worthless around here!

no team with two 2nd rounders will trade for the pats 1st rounder, especially when the talent is so level from the end of the 1st to the end of the second...who ever has two 2nd rounders besides us...

I know Welker makes plays, not near as many as Troy Brown but I can see the similarities; and I think he does well in our division because of a current lack of physical corners and because of the Ty Law Rule, but whenever you have a player that size taking the type of hits he is taking, you have to wonder if that 2nd round pick is going to end up sitting on the IR. This is of course my opinion that he wasn't worth the second, I just don't see him being worth a day 1 pick because of that risk.

BTW, I put as much credence into ESPN's football opinion as I do in Vince McMahon's football opinion. ESPN is sports MTV.

if you know anything about reporting or sports journalism...you dont report a contract unless you are close to certain you have a good idea of what it is worth, otherwise your columns lose validation

point is there are paying him way more then he is worth...and for a 2nd round pick...thats a joke! would you give tim dwight a contract that large...

You are wrong. They are not paying him anything. the contract numbers are pure speculation and there is not even a contract yet! If you think Wess Welker is going to get anything close to tha sum you are taking the term "wishful thinking" a bit to far. This debate is about the draft pick, not how much money he is getting. There is no contract, and when there is, it will not be worth these big rumor sums that are being tossed around

If you think the pats cannot trade down and trade up there is no point in debating this with you. You are 100 percent wrong about this. They would package a 1st rounder with one of the extra mid rounders from when Adam V walked. People trade up and down all the time.

Look what happened to lasts years second round pick by the pats. Everyone I have talked to has this kid as a steal. Troy Brown is the same size as this kid. We will agree to disagree. With two first round picks, I think a second for a proven nfl player is worth it. 68 catches for over 700 yards in a terrible situation in miami is a person with upside. I see him fitting in perfectly in that system.

Thank you, you stole my thunder. Those prics in Foxboro pissed their pants when a rookie 35 year old coach at that took Herm's scrapheap into New England and beat the crap out of them. They pissed their pants and supposedly broke an NFL rule about changing playing surfaces mid season, now they are spending like Daddy Warbucks in the offseason. Bellichicken is scared and now the Pats are making desperate moves. Welker is a good return guy but not even close to 40 mill and a 2nd rounder. I'm sure the Dolphins brass laughed when they saw that, what would be better is if the Phins actually matched it.

Oh and I'd much rather have Brandon Stokely at a much much cheaper price and no draft picks to give up.
