Lets rewind this to last year. Would you still be putting all these players over CP? Doubtful. He single handedly carried us last year. Also, if you look at what he has done historically from just a win/loss perspective who on your list is better? It seems like a bit of an over reaction to a bad year where much of it was out of his control.
Happy New year Super. I like this thread and count me in for keeping Chad next year. Ok, he doesn't have a laser arm but he has loads of smarts and can lead a team through it's strength, not his. He was muscled out of the job this year because everyone thought Kellen had to have his chance. I don't like what I see in him already and there appears to be no one in free agency or probably the draft who can help this team in the immeadiate future. I hope we we keep Chad until either Kellen blossoms or we pick up a new future guy. The guy I want isn't available but someone tell we how we could work out a trade for Aaron Rogers at the Bay.
Cotch and Coles made every single catch they put nothing on the floor and they made play after play, coupled with great special teams that continually changed field position in our favor and put points on the board. That, no injuries an easy schedule and a new scheme that fooled a lot of bad teams is what carried us. In big games against good teams Pennington broke down last year, Chicago, Jacksonville, Buffalo at home he was expossed and he made one of the dumb plays of all time in the Pats playoff game that turned a close game in the second half into an outright blowout. Pennington played well at times last year and poorly at times last year, he did not single handedly carry this club last year.
That is because Kellen is not better than Chad and the players know it. If Kellen was the guy, he wouldn't even care if Kellen was there or not. Do you think Cutler gave a crap about Plummer?
Good post Red totally agree. I don't want Pennington back beacuse he isn't that good and it's a total bore to watch him play. I'm not at all sold on Clemens but the idea of paying Chad 4.8 million when we could bring in a solid veteran to compete for half that makes me ill. It's bad enough if we keep him he counts for almost 8 million against our cap next year but unless he is willing to take at least a 2.8 million dollar salary cut there is no way he should be back next year. Even if he beats out Clemens in TC, he still isn't a 5 million dollar a year QB on a rebuilding team that needs to make changes and move on. To give you some perspective Chad will make 4.8 million next year and Clemens will make 445,000 next year. Salary matters in the NFL especially if you are rebuilding. We can argue that Chad is better than Clemens although the team results prove otherwise but one thing is sure at 4.8 million Chad is an anchor on this team that needs help all over.
Dude, he threw picks to lose us the game in 3/4 consecutive games and had games where he was throwing for 100-150 yards. If you're going to make rookie mistakes, when being smart is supposed to be your strength, then you might as well put in the rookie.
I agree. Chad was very much off this year. If we recall, Chad had a horrible pre-season. He did not look sharp at all. Can anyone speculate on this? I think it totally carried over to the regular season. Then when it became quite evident that we had major issues with the offensive line and Chad had no time at all, plus no reliable running game, it did a number of things. It completely limited they play calling, which is why it may have been speculated that Schotty was unimaginative this year. I just don't think Schott had the tools and tried to work with what he had which wasn't much when it was obvious that our line was undersized and sucked. After that, Chad's weaknesses could be completely exploited by opposing defenses because they could completely not respect our running game and basically said, "Chad, beat us with your arm." Well, we all know Chad can not function like that. That is why Clemens took over after we were officially eliminated from playoff contention after week 8 (very sad). This is and interesting point. Chad is a "run will set up the pass QB" while Peyton is a"pass will set up the run QB".
Plummer was not immortalized by mgmt or fans the way Chad is. It is time for Chad and all of his cronies in the locker room to go. The team is rebuilding and there should be a whole new crew available for the next Qb wheather it be Clemens or somebody else. Chad serves no purpose here anymore. His presence can only serve as a distraction at this point.
If you put Chad behind a solid Offensive line that will consistently give him time to pass, and give him a RB that teams need to worry about so that Chad's PA skills will be effective, then he certainly can be a top 10 guy.
I said it before the season started last year, during the season and after that Chad is the most overrated Jet of all time. I would take them all over Chad.
I'm sorry but the minute you have to qualify the "is a top 10 guy" statement with the following... "needs an offensive line, and a running game, and good receivers and a superior defense, etc..." he is not a top 10 guy. Top 10 guys can get the job done with less than ideal circumstances. Pennington is not a top ten guy. He is a Trent Dilfer kind of guy who makes top 10 money.
I believe that this is the essence of it. My definition of a top player (whatever number you choose, and whatever position you're talking about) is that he changes the game with his presence, and makes the other team adapt to him. That has not been Pennington for a very long time, and certainly by no means was the case last year (the notion that he carried the team to 10 wins last year while having 17 TDs and 16 INTs in 16 games and less than 7 yards per pass attempt is to me completely ridiculous). IMO he was a top QB in 2002, and has ranged from a little above average to average to below average since then. I also agree that unless he is willing to take a major pay cut he does not belong on this team next year (and even if he is willing to take that pay cut it still might not be worth the distraction), and him having a great year for Minnesota next year (for example) wouldn't change that fact at all.
The Broncos players loved Plummer but not so much the fans. I would argue the fans booing when Chad got hurt is not exactly immortalized. If Kellen has to worry about Chad being on the team he is not the QB we need. If that is the case, don't bring in McCown because he will beat him out of the job then you will be whining how Kellen doesn't get a fair chance. It seems like the best scenario for you would be to get Bolly back and maybe a undrafted free agent. Then that way maybe the players in the locker room would think that Kellen is the best option.
Considering your definition of top player, I would say that the Jets do not have a top player at any postion including QB. We have some good players but no top players. At this point While KC won three games, however imo the best he has looked to was in the Baltimore Game which he lost. I can not give him credit for the Steelers game because the defense really stepped up for that win. Therefore I would say KC 2 CP 1. At this point I would assert that we have two mediocre QB's at best. I like Chad a lot, is he the best option for winning at this point, I don't know, but unfortunately KC has not done anything to make me comfortable about the QB postition for the future or that he is the best option at the position.
Plenty of people would agree with that, but I don't. Unfortunately, none of those "top players" are on offense, which is a big part of why the offense sucked so bad. I would argue that Washington is a top kick returner, and Revis, Rhodes, and Harris could very well be top players at their positions, as teams definitely do game plan for them (two are rookies and two are second year players, so it's hard to be sure at this point). But, if the general point is that the Jets are a team without a great deal of talent, I think that's hard to dispute.
I might give you Washington as a top Kick returner, I think Hester is more dangerous, but Washington is darn good. The fact that you say revis rhodes and harris COULD be top players proves my point. I think I said that we some good players those three would be in the bunch. But I stand by my statement that we do not have any top players. We do not have a game changing, must prepare for, must account for players on either side of the ball, In short there is not one player that opposing teams are scared of, Harris Revis Rhodes are a nice nucleus for a defense but only time will tell.
