Well, I would say that "thinkin'" and "hopin'" is nice, but the proof will be on that line of scrimmage this fall. We shouldn't just read resumes and think we've got the problem fixed. I would like to see more investment in the draft in the line of scrimmage. This doesn't mean I think it's a great idea to bunch early draft picks -- but there are certainly a lot of good Big Uglie candidates in the later rounds -- as we've seen from another thread I have been participating in on here. It's not a box to check off, the line of scrimmage is the real key to victory. For an example, just look at the NYG's ability to turn that game around last year in Buffalo. Eli couldn't throw to help himself and so the OL and the RBs just took the damned game over. The NYJs need to conquer the line of scrimmage so that they can take the game over, all the time. When are NFL defenses going to respect the NYJ line of scrimmage? The answer is, When We MAKE them.
Hate to say it because PFT is usually pretty good, but thats a god awful analysis. A corner at six is ridiculous if weve already got one dynamite corner that we just drafted a year ago, and any Virginia Tech fan will tell you that Xavier Adibi is not even close to an inside linebacker, hes like 6'1 220 and fast, hes an outside linebacker and probably not a 3-4 linebacker at all. They probably meant to say Vince Hall, VT ILB who runs 6' 240 and is a dynamite player that I'm hoping for in the third.
Admit you didn't watch him play last year. I don't attack Aso or Huff because i didn't watch them play. How many games did you watch Revis play last year? -- Sheer Ignorance.
First off all you have to look at Asomugha stats . They are self explanatory. Teams only threw 27 times against him and completed like 9 passes. Revis look how many tackles he has in comparison. Lets see more tackles equals no one afraid of him, and alot of wrs are catching passes on him. Thats exactly what we saw in first half. Teams were tested him regularly, and were having alot of sucess. Even Rhodes was being victimized in pass coverage in the first half. Second half both players coverage picked up alot. Now was it them getting better or other factors. Like Weather, TEams Jets played, or Gimmick Jet defense employed. (standing their defensivelineman up at line of scrimmage. Jets by standing their Dline up were confusing alot of the other team blocking assignments. (remember the steelers game) What was probably the worst team generating a pass rush(jets), suddenly was having alot of sucess using this gimmick(its fools gold just like the exotic Blitz packages employed the year before) Eventually teams figure out what you are doing . THan your relying on your talent, and whats happens is what we saw in first half. Lets See Pittsburgh without their full wr corp + Jet Gimmick giving them fits.,Dolphins (worst team in NFL) Titans(Horrible passing offense and a severly banged up chiefs team to end the regualar season. Look at the weather for some of those games in second half. Not condusive to passing the football. YES only time will tell what Revis is. He could be very good, or it could be other factors I mentioned. Even if Revis all that. You still need at least two other CBs. Please don't tell me J Miller and D Barrett are answers. Go ahead want to dispute anything I said. NOw Even Huff stats tell the story. Look at the top TES and how he was able to control them. (hes one ogf the best Coverage safeties in the game) He really not cut out for SS as thats why Raiders are moving him to his more natural FS(Better suit his skills)
NT is the most important Position in 3-4. IF you don't have one there goes effectiveness of your 3-4. Also when you starting the olbs you were last year. Lets see No NT + no pass rushing OLbs = your Des look like they aren't doing their jobs.
You & I, & hopefully the Jets' know that they need 1 more young talented O-lineman that can play T/G. Its just that they can get that player in the 4th - 6th round & don't need him in rounds 1-3; if they don't add anymore draft picks by draft day.
Jake Long sucks. He's a complete stiff. Gholston abused him. Long is way overrated. He is very big, but so is Anthony Clements & Adrian Clarke.
Sure, with all that said- The Raiders have a 26th ranked Defense, Jets have the 19th. Aso's stats weren't needed. I don't care what went on, plus the excuses made afterward. None of that answered the question if you watched Revis play. Stats mean little. You really think all of Revis' tackles are from pass plays? The guy is impressive in run D, he doesn't shy away. So thanks for essentially saying "No i didn't see him play" all the while blowing asomugha in the process.
Long is overrated? Son, put the pipe down... Watching Gholston blow by him once, being half of the Sacks Allowed by Long in 4 years doesn't make him overrated. When you get older you will understand.
Then why is Richard Seymour the most important player on NE's D. He is the only person on the team capable of pressuring and penetrating without blitzing. We do not have a guy like that on our team. NE is a completely different D when he is hurt or out. The NT is important, but if you can't get pressure without constant blitzing you are in trouble considering how many teams are throwing out 4-5 recievers at a time.( which was why the Giants went on a run without Shockey) The Jets have signed a bunch of guys trying to fill this position the last 2 years, Kimo Van Oelhoffen anyone, Coleman?? We are giving away Drob because he can't fit either 3-4 line position, not just NT. He was drafted as a 3 technique DT. Same reason we would pass on Ellis or Dorsey. Why is Parcells never projected to take Dorsey who is easily the best D lineman in this draft? Because he doesn't fit EITHER position in a 3-4. Impact Dlineman are way harder to find than LB's. Go reread every draft over the last 10 years.
I agree totally here, but Jets' had so many holes & appeared to fill some of them...but they still have alot. O-liine & d-line need more players, than they have draft picks. This is more than a 1 offseason task.
Well lets not go too crazy. SD and Pitt both run a 3-4 and neither of them have front 3 players who are really good pass rushers. Their pressure comes from creative blitz packages and athletic OLB's. There is not one single factor in the 3-4 that is more important than any of the others...you have to have the following... 1. A true nose tackle w/ a wide playing base, the ability to collapse the pocket, command double teams, and capable of at least 25 plays a game. 2. A solid front 3 rotation w/ enough size, strength, stamina and discipline to keep the linebackers protected and gaps occupied. 3. Athletic Olb's w/ muli dimensional skill sets. They must have proper size to take on TE's and OT's in the running game, the ability to cover TE's in the passing game, and the speed/technique to rush the passer 4. Big, strong, and smart ILB's who can call the gap assignments pre snap, and take on interior lineman post snap. 5. Physical CB's who not only can cover in the passing game, but can come up and maintain gaps in the running game.
The problem is unless you have a monster pass rush, you need 3 good corners. Two is not even enough. Welcome to the pass happy NFL where passing records are broken every year.
Ok....I see it like this: If Jets' draft McFadden, there O-line is enough for them to be successful this season, because McFadden doesn't need much of a hole with his speed & power. If Jets' draft defense...then they will have to draft defense heavy to be successful. Jets' O-line isn't strong enough to carry offense yet. I see Damien Woody as a good G/T backup or starter at guard. Jets' really need more players than they have draft picks. They really need to trade down...if possible. They need at least 5-6 picks in the first 3 rounds alone. They also need to re-sign Hobson & play him at ILB. That would help defense for this season.
We basically agree, because when you go by that criteria, we are weakest on D at CB and 3-4 DE, which was my original point. Our LB's look good right now, we are deep at NT, Safety not a problem, and we need another Corner. But if Ellis( who is getting old) goes down we have ZERO depth at that position, or really at either side of the line. We disagree on San Diego. Olshansky and Castillo are way better than what we have at DE.
