Well, he is bound to knock down a few passes when EVERY QB picks on him. He played like garbage last year. Can he improve? Definitely, but dont defend his play last year. He was absolutely atriocious at times.
A few? He was among the best in the league at it. You guys are acting like little kids, crying because Lowery wasn't perfect. Wah, wah, the fourth round rookie gave up some touchdowns but also made a lot of big plays, but I'll ignore that part. Wah, wah, the Jets should have benched him sooner, even there was no one else that would have played half as well that the Jets could have gotten last season, but I'll just ignore that. Wah, wah, Law was a joke and was much worse than Lowery in coverage, but I'll just ignore that, too. Give me a break.
It's funny. I think with Lowery, we as Jets fans had no expectations for the fourth round kid most of us had never heard of, never seen, or barely knew of through cursory reports. So when he came out and looked good, our expectations shot through the roof, and we thought we'd made a Tom Brady like steal. We were super excited. Then, as time went on, Lowery played like a rookie we never heard of who was drafted in the fourth round. So, because our expectations rose so high, everyone dog piled on him and said he sucked. He was a victim of his own success. IMO he showed flashes of potential of what can be if he's allowed to develop and he works hard. We'll see.
I thought Lowery did pretty well last year considering the situation he was put in. Revis wasn't going to get picked on, so Lowery being a rookie was the obvious choice. Somebody was going to be the victim of those passes. Lowery still played hard and I don't remember him missing a tackle.
Agreed, I mean I will be the first guy to admit it, when we traded down in round 4, right after the run on Cb's (Branch/king) and then Lowery's name popped up on the board, I literally said out loud, "Who the Hell is that?" I mean i did lots of research on the later round guys, (not anywhere near the level that Mr. Electric, and the other great Draft guys do, but still plenty to familiarize myself with just about every guy out there the Jets might have been looking at.) After he was picked, I looked him up, coupled with the beliefs of Mr. E among others, and the Strength guy from SJSU who came on and told us all about Lowery, I was super pumped, and really Lowery was way more than anything we could have ever hoped for as a 4th round rookie. You're right, he managed to play his best game of the year, first. That Miami game was dynamite for a him, he outplayed every other rookie CB that week IMO. As the season went on, he batted down fewer balls, was picked on more and more, simply because of RevisChrist on the other side of the field. Remember raiderjoe after the scooped up Deangelo Hall? how obnoxious he was saying its the best secondary in the league bar none! well several of us here admitted the combo of Hall and Nnamdi was going to be dynamite, and nearly impossible to throw against. Wrong, Hall got 10 million balls thrown his way because no one wanted to throw at Nnamdi. Honest to god, most teams top CB's only look that good because the other team doesnt throw that many passes against them. If you just line-up and throw against them, they dont make that many great plays and get spotted way more often than you would like. If you put them across from a truly great corner like Nnamdi, they pick on the other guy, and he gets exposed. So Lowery is that other guy, to Revis.
Yep, and you want a play maker on the other side of that solid shutdown corner. One who will hit hard and force fumbles after the catch. You'll have to choose between a low percentage pass or getting your receiver beat up and possibly turning the ball over, and teams chose the latter consistently. You'll notice that once law was in, the pass defense didn't get any better, but our physicality got a lot worse all over the defense.
Gholston I think steps up now & Rhodes goes back to being the player he was 3 years ago. I also think Pace becomes a 10 sack guy cause he will not be in coverage as much. Leon & Keller I think will be used more & we could see there full potential which would be great these guys are players who were under used.
that was the coaches fault to have him on Ted Ginn..I think he has potential and he is not as slow as people think, he had a pulled hamstring on the day of the combine anyway i, like others, expect kerry rhodes to be the playmaker he is capable of being in the '09 season
I know the defense will change a lot but how much do people on this board think the offense would change? will ryan affect the offense significantly?
We are all going to see Dwight Lowery turn into a 2nd year stud. I kid you not. He has the skill to be a top tier CB one day if he is used correctly and I think Ryan will be the one to do it. Your going to see a very aggressive Jets D next season and Lowery will benefit from it being able to jump more route as the play develops in front of him. He is a ballhawk, dont forget it. He has a knack for being around the ball, especially if the damn front 7 do their job and apply pressure on the QB. He going to have 5 Ints next season and there will be a noticeable difference in his coverage. I also think we are going to see pleasant progress from Gholston, and he will be a situational player on 3rd downs mainly, but will also contribute spot duty and perform well. I expect to see about 3-5 sacks from Gholston, multiple pressures and knockdowns. He should also improve greatly against the run. Not a full time starter yet, but definitely on his way.
nyjets624 I think Leon will get the ball more cause Ryan has already said we are going to run alot more & if Kellen or Ratliff are our QB they are going to go to the TE as there saftey value alot of inexperienced QB's do that.
