One week at a time. The steelers did it last year

Its certainly do-able. I dont know why everyone wants to hate on the jets. Lets take care of houston, and focus on struggling green bay. All the naysayers will be signing a different tune if the jets are 7-5 two weeks from now hosting buffalo.

Mangini and Tannenbaum have done an amazing job this year in getting the Jets into the upper half of the AFC, even if only barely. If they maintain the 8 slot for the rest of the year it will be one of the great feats in Jet's history rivaling the Super Bowl win and Parcell's back to back great years in 1997 and 1998.

I think you might be the only person in the world who thinks that winning Super Bowl III and finishing about .500 this year would be in any way comparable to each other, especially given the easy schedule this year.

I definitely think Mangini and Tannenbaum are taking the team in the right direction, but let's be serious here.

Think of it this way: the Jets coming into the season had no assurances at QB, RB, LT, C, RT, K, NT, LOLB and ROLB. None of those positions were filled by somebody who was likely to have a good year. Then the starting RCB got hurt and has been iffy all year, forcing a variety of people to play (mostly poorly) in that position. Despite all of this the Jets have a pretty good shot at 9 wins.

The Super Bowl Jets had been one of the top 3 teams in the AFC for a 3 year period before they finally won it all. I think the two feats are pretty similar if you look at the probability of each occurring.

Actually, they had only been a good team for one year before 1968 (8-5-1 in 1967, and even then they tied with San Diego for 4th/5th best record in a 9 team league); they were a .500 team in 1966.

I won't bother getting into the relative probabilities of it, but flipping a coin 10 times and getting all heads is a low probability event, and no one would call it "a great feat." What the Jets could do this year is nice, but teams come from nowhere to make the playoffs all the time in the NFL - it's just not that unusual. It's far harder to beat an excellent Oakland team in the playoffs and then defeat a team many people at the time viewed as the best NFL team ever in the Super Bowl. IMO it's not even remotely close.

I agree they are doing a great job, especially if we finish strong.....however, you just can't compare a damn nfl championship to a season in which a team goes 8-8, 9-7 or something like that. I see you're point in that it is almost as good of a job, but come on now, they just don' compare

How does a team go from possible Super Bowl Contender, to talentless and expected to go 4-12? Herm destroyed the Jets because of QB and O-line problems, but the QB came back from injury, and the O-line has been rebuilt. It's not quite as good as it was 2 years ago, but it is certainly good enough. Last year we were supposed to win the division, you don't just go from that to finishing last. I think it's clear the problem is the QB, even if he was healthy last year we'd have fallen short. Next year we're going to have to actually beat some good teams a decent number of times, we can't just hope Chad shows up against the weaker teams. No one is asking him to beat every good team we face, but I don't think it's too much to ask from a QB not to show up for 6 weeks at a time.

I read this entire thread waiting for at least ONE PERSON with the same crystal ball that I have. After Sunday, after we beat the Texans and after the Bears eek out another win in Foxboro, we will be back to 1 game out of 1st place in the AFCE (Jets 6-5, NE 7-4)

Both NE and the JETS have a fairly ez ride the rest of the way, but winning the east and playing our first PO game at home against a WC team sound pretty good right now.

Remeber the year when NE sent the Fins packing and then set up monitors in the parking lots so the NE fans could watch the late game (Jets vs GB)? All that needed to happen was for the great Farve to beat the 8-7 Jets and NE was in baby.

But nooooo. Someone forgot to tell the Jets they were supposed to loose, so the Jets spanked Fave, tied with NE 9-7, and by virtue of a tie breaker went to the playoffs.

    So....lets do it again!!!!!

Yes we do, but most importantly, the jets must win.

The AFCE and AFC West seem to pretty much make up this list. Beating the Fins and Bills is going to be really important.

The Jets really cant afford to lose -- and if they do -- its going to have to be GB/Minny.

The KC win was hard to take.

wow, i just got back from the bar; also watched the Buffalo game. that was a BIG win for both them and us.

Buffalo definitely is no easy win. Losman is starting to heat up and their D was flying around today.

things are about to get very interesting.

    cheers

I wont cry if Oakland upsets San Diego also(Doubtful but eh).

KC looks like they want to go on a run with Trent Green back, and they could potentially beat SD again. So there could be a chance SD relies on a wildcard spot, pending on KC.

The AFC West is way too tight.
