Geno Smith will never be a Top QB. He will never be a Pro Bowl QB. Can he manage the offense, with a strong defense behind him, to play decently and make the playoffs? We will see. In my opinion, he is the worst Jets starting QB of my lifetime. I have never felt less confident in a QB ever. Hope his new offensive weapons help him out, or even better, Fitzpatrick or Petty outplay him in Training Camp.
this has the potential to be an end of year thread bump where all the people auto shitting on Geno will backtrack.
It also has the potential to be an end of year bump thread where all the pro- Geno posts get torn to shreds
not really, the pro genos, save a couple that followed him from wvu, are not talking in definitive statements, just preaching patience with a 3 year project heading into year 3. i don't see how anyone would be shredded for that
Bump the thread. Tag my username, and I will come back and lead the parade if I am wrong. I would love nothing more!
Reason for optimism: Football Outsiders gives historical comparisons for every NFL player based on age, season number and career statistics... they have John Elway as the comp for Geno's career trajectory. Lol, not banking on that one.
John Elway was yester-years Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning. They were first picks in the draft for a reason. Please never mention Geno Smith and John Elway in the same sentence ever again. _
Lol, it's the first I've ever seen Football Outsider's "Similarity Score". At least it didn't take me long to find out that it's another made up garbage stat.
Hey, at least this one gives a formula for how it's calculated http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/similarity ESPN just gives QB's a rating depending on the weather and what kind of mood the statistician was in when he was watching the game.
Ha I had a laugh going through some of the similarity scores, some of my favorites were Dalton-Aikman, Dalton-Montana, C. Palmer-Marino, Tannehill-P. Manning, Cutler-Montana. I guess to be fair, they are comparing specific seasons where their scores were similar but it was still funny.
correct. I don't see a single person saying GENO is the man and is going to step forward 100%. Just that there is reason for optimism that he can. On the flipside, there are a ton of 'definitive' Geno is hopeless posts.
I get everything you're saying, but worst of your lifetime is really, really strong. Two words: Brooks Bollinger. Smith had ups in his career. By your admission, he could do things in the NFL competently. Bollinger, who started for the Jets, could hand off to Ron Dayne at Wisconsin, but, in the NFL, couldn't even manage five first downs. Just saying, Smith isn't the absolute worst ;-)
Bringing up Bollinger is a real sore spot for me. Not saying the dude was any good, but there's a real example of how a CS can underserve a Qb. You can talk all you want about how a 3rd string Qb doesn't get much work with the top players. But in 2005 the Jets entered the season with arguably the two most fragile 1 and 2 Qb's in the league in Chad and the even more fragile Jay Fiedler. It was not as huge a surprise as it might have otherwise been when both went down in the same game, leaving Bollinger as the starter. He was totally unprepared. In that case I blamed the CS, especially Herm, for that set of circumstances. Even more telling, despite the unhappiness wiht Bollinger's performance that year, his Qb rating was 72.9. Smith's for two years with the Jets? 71.5. Heh.
If Geno learned to simply not make mistakes with handling the football, he'd appear as a strong middle of the road QB. It's amazing how not losing the game for the team alone makes a significant difference in the contribution to a successful program. Obviously we want more, but that alone would be a great leap.
It is very true. That is the problem though. Other QB's around the league actually win games for their teams. Jets fans would be happy as long as Geno doesn't lose the game for them. Unfortunately, that is the current situation we are in.
