Interesting stuff: Just in case anyone is even interested anymore, don't forget today is a 1:05pm start.
Hughes and Kennedy are not garbage. They are top end pitching prospects who are going through typical growing pains. Cashman made the right move by keeping them. Johan or no Johan we werent going anywhere this season. There are however a few moves cashman has made that i believe contributed to where we are at this stage. 1. Sheffield over Guerrerro- This was absolutely idiotic. Guererro was/is better, younger and isn't a clubhouse/media nightmare like Sheffield.Think about how much more productive our line-up would be right now if we had Vlad. 2. Passing on Carlos beltran- There have been whispers for years that Beltran was willing to take less money for more years to avoid going to the mets and coming to the yankees. Maybe he hasnt lived up to the hype he got that year of free agency...but again...how much better would our outfield/line-up look right now w/ Beltran in there?? This one might be worse than Vlad...at least sheffield was productive for acouple years! 3. Pavano- We threw alot of money at a pitcher who was a # 3 starter at best..who's price tag inflated due to a weak free agency crop. Maybe our pitching has been so-so w/o him..but it hasnt helped our budget and It's caused rumbles in the clubhouse. Than again..if we didnt sign him..he goes to Boston and wins a Cy Young. Thats the way things go these days. 4. Failed bull pen signings- Paul Quantrill, Steve Karsay,Jay Witasik, Latroy hawkins,Buddy Groom...the list goes on and on... This is gonna be a HUGE offseason for Cashman. Many guys are coming off the books and this is the best FA crop in a long time. Logical moves need to be made. We need some hitters who can play small ball and come through in the clutch..NOT senseless big name power hitters. We need relievers who fit into an actual role/system..again..not just Big name hurlers. Let's see what he does..history states he will screw it up and we'll have vomit in our mouths by July of next year.
I half agree. Hughes is very talented, he just needs to stay away from Pavano and learn to stay healthy. You know my position on Kennedy. I just don't see him ever being much more than a bottom of the rotation starter for a bottom tier team. His stuff just isn't very good.
Cashman will most likely keep his job (if he even wants it) but I would bet Hank will be making the calls just like his father did 10 years ago. Right now I trust him more. After all, it was George who personally brought in Clemens, Wells, Boggs and a host of others who I can't remember right now.
How can people have the balls to say the Yanks have made the playoffs since "93"? So I guess the Expos made the playoffs in 1994 too? Is that how it works?
Having pictures in the newspapers and evening news of Yankee Stadium being taken down with a wrecking ball is going to be surreal in October. Almost symbolic.
It won't be. There is an outdoor NHL hockey game scheduled in December. That is the last event I know of. How about Shea though?
I assume you're responding to my post. In fairness, the article specifically mentioned that there were no playoffs in '94, I just didn't include the entire text because it wasn't relevant. Honestly, the thing I found interesting was that the last time there were playoffs the Yankees didn't participate in, Mike Piazza was still in the minors. I just thought it was interesting, not something to argue over.
And didn't the Yankees have a 10 game lead in their division when the season was called? nope...only 6.5. They were going anyway so it doesn't really matter. Mets, on the other hand were 18 1/2 out. http://shrpsports.com/mlb/stand/1994finaldiv.htm
Bleh, the playoffs didn't happen that year. It's fair to say the Yankees didn't make it. They went on strike like everyone else. It really wasn't the point I was trying to make anyway.
Can you really be surprised about that though, he was a platoon player in Detroit, people looked too much at big name and not enough on production
Nah they switched that to Wrigley due to opposition, i don't know if there will be anything in Yankee stadium after the season is over.
No, I'm not surprised at all, and I said he was a waste when he was traded for. Farnsworth had been great and we dumped him for a has-been. The argument was that he'd be better than letting Molina play more games than he'd ever played before. Guess not. They didn't. That was the last time they weren't in the playoffs, when a playoffs actually occurred.
Pretty amazing run the Yanks had, it had to end sometime. I'm not surprised at all that this is the year it ends, I am surprised how it will end though. Before the year I thought it would be the pitching that did them in this year, never would have thought it would be the bats.
By the way, can anyone explain to me why this series isn't at Fenway and the final series of the season isn't at Yankee Stadium? Wouldn't that have made more sense?
When you haven't won a title in a few years, and your division rival won it last year, there's an advantage for the defending champ you would assume. And it's fair.
Personally, I would have LOVED to see the final series at Yankee Stadium, just for the history of it. The Sox were the first visitors and it would have been fitting for them to have been the last as well. It would have been a storybook scenario.
I know what you mean, but it would have been an unfair advantage for the Yankees had both teams been where they should be right now. The defending champ should not have to play at their greatest rival's house to close out a season, especially when that series should have been set up to decide the division.
