We also beat the Patriots, the Saints and the Falcons. I know the article was referencing his improvement near the end of the year, but dismissing his play due to the teams they faces is a little silly. To put that in perspective, the Browns had the #8 ranked defense against the pass last year. Raiders were bad, but Miami as a whole was right near our level, and were average against the pass. Geno having a very good game against the #8 D, means something, whether they are the Browns or not.
I saw all those games. Oakland, Cleveland and Miami did not play well. Miami scored 7 points the last two games of the season. Was that Smith's doing? The three teams you mentioned had various roster issues when the Jets played them. And Atlanta had an awful season. Why mention them? More to the point is why anyone would basically rule out analyses that addresses the quality of the opponent.
all 3 of those games geno played well and who cares how good or bad they were, if geno was as awful as you say and the jets as bad as you say how did we win? Geno didn't play great the last qtr but he improved dramatically from a terrible QB to a competent one. Add a year of experience, add actual talent around him and let's see what we got.
To be fair BB, Geno Smith played better those last 4 games. It's true the team was able to beat some sub-par opponents in those games and the kid has a lot to learn. He might even be terrible and shouldn't even be the starter over Vick, I have maintained that. But you aren't being fair by continually knocking his performance the last 4 games...attributing it both to sub-par opponents and game planning. Ripping people as "homers" in some cases for simply saying he played better those last 4 games, when no matter what you can say to discredit it - he did. I went and watched the All-22s of those 4 games and he played much better, no doubt. I don't really think it had much to do with game planning either, they still let the kid "let it rip" like they did all season. Even if I truly believed they were able to mask his deficiencies by altering or simplifying the game plan, I don't really see that as a knock on Geno Smith anyway, maybe the coaching staff is finally figuring out what works for the kid. Hell in our same city the Giants are throwing out their old playbook in an effort to simplify and mask deficiencies for their QB and he's a two-time SB MVP!!!
It really depends who you're talking about, it's not all heavy excavating equipment here - sometimes just a beach pail and a little plastic shovel.
I don't believe I KNOCKED his performance the last few games in the sense of denying he performed better in them. In fact I have said he did. For example clearly he did not turn the ball over as much, and did not lose the three games they won (by definition, perhaps, but also compared to other games earlier, when he imo lost the games with turnovers and poor play). But I do think the quality of opponents is relevant when attempting to extrapolate those wins into the future. And I also think there is a risk that opponents will take the more conservative playcalling and offensive scheming employed in those games and counter that approach.
I absolutely fucking detest this logic. When we lose we lose. But when we win it's because the team had something affecting them.
Rex Ryan has a winning record as a Jets HC. He's just got figure out how to get back at it this season
It's more about Geno's pocket awareness, footwork, running improvement and confidence level improvements, than just the results of the games. There is a noticeable difference in his poise from the early season to late in the year. Some of the mistakes he made early on wreaked of inexperience. He seemed to learn from most of them and use it to improve his game overall. Smith put up 3 TDs and a 91 rating against the #8 passing D (#9 overall D), his best game of the year aside from Atlanta. Was that only because of Cleveland playing bad on offense (against our viscous Dline)? What roster issues did the Saints have when we played them that affected Geno? The Jets also had numerous roster issues last year, that affected his position directly. Winslow suspension, Goodson suspension then injury, Kerley injury, Hill injury and inability to get the timing down on his routes, Holmes injury on top of his other injury, the oline ups and downs. It seems you are looking for excuses to dismiss him. The Falcons were better than their record indicated, IMO. Either way, the point is that Geno improved when you look at point A and then point B. I'm not saying he's awesome. He struggled against the Panthers, who have a top D in the league. He's still got a ways to go, but the improvement is a good sign. I just don't see why people are throwing that in the garbage because we played a few crappy teams down the stretch. The guy improved, just looking at his mechanics, and that is completely irrelevant to the quality of the teams he played.
if your gonna knock the teams geno played good against then i hope you are also knocking the piece of shit offense he was working with in the losses too. When Greg Salas and David Nelson are a rookie QB's #1 & 2 targets, with an unreliable TE in Cumberland and who the hell was even the slot WR while kerley was hurt? Salim Hakeem? lmao.. I would love to see another QB's let alone another rookie QB's performance with that piece of shit we were calling an offense. And i dont wanna hear that atlanta sucked shit bc they were projected super bowl contenders by alot of people last year and we beat them while they were still healthy..us on the other hand were projected as the worst team in the league...32nd! How does it possibly matter who we beat? WE AINT SPOSED TO BE SHIT!!! We are underrated by even our own supporters if u ask me.. see me when the playoffs start this year. 10-6. We are not the team other teams wanna play! lol
The only evidence Big Blocker needs of a team's ineptitude is to get beaten by the NY Jets. That's the only explanation.
I don't mean to beat a dead horse but I really think it comes down to a clean windshield for Geno. When the pocket was clear & he had time to step into his motion he made clean throws & more often than not they were the proper reads(at least based on result). You can't take his performance over the last month away from him b/c of opponent. You play who is on your schedule. How many times have the Patriots side stepped facing an elite opponent due to injury or suspension over the years & blown the team away in the process?Does that ever stop anyone from hyping them? Furthermore,,Both the Browns & Raiders have given the Jets all kinds of trouble even in GOOD years. Miami was playing for a playoff birth at home..Jets were already eliminated.
Yeah...well Mother Teresa never won us a Super Bowl. You can not like him all you want...he's still the only QB to win us a Lombardi Trophy.
One thing I hate Jets fans doing is grading Rex by "Jets Standards". By that, he should get a 10 year extension. By NFL Standards: He should have already been fired.
Didn't you know that injuries are only a legitimate excuse when they happen to other teams? That rule doesn't apply to the Jets! Smells like chowda to me...
Marvin Lewis and his years of mediocrity? Gary Kubiak before Wade Phillips? Jason Garrett? This isn't Jet standards my friend. This happens in the league.
