Take your insightful understanding somewhere else, Mr. Smart guy. I bet you were reading before you saw this. Egghead likes his bookie book!
When I read what he said, I thought "Shit, why'd he hafta say that." But then I watched the video. He wasn't being boastful, just confident. He's starting to make me a believer. And for all his sometime bluster, I'd rather live with his faults (whatever they might be) than have a robot like Belichick or Mangini at the helm. And his players absolutely love playing for him. Listen to what TJ said about him yesterday on the NFL Network...that he considers Ryan a teammate. That kind of respect goes a long way at the pro level. That's the same Thomas Jones that was considered disgruntled earlier this year. Look at how he's responded this season. Look at how the whole team's responded. It's not all about the talent on a team, look at the Redskins. Anyway, when I look back at our season I see so many good things to build on. Most of our losses were our fault. We can correct that. We weren't really blown out of any games 'cept the Pats game in late Nov. The New Orleans game was closer then the score IMO. We even played better after that dismal Atlanta game. A lot of teams would have mailed in the rest of the season after that. If Sanchez can markedly improve and if we can get a slot receiver (ala Welker) we will be one formidable team. Of course, that's if we can mantain our running attack and our defense..a defense which I feel can get better, maybe even legendary if we can make some noise in the post season. Whatever we do in the post-season, Ryan's got this team headed in the right direction...and he's doing it with style. It's been a while since I've felt this good about being a Jets fan, and if Ryan can keep it going a few more weeks, he'll make a lot of people into believers as well.
Supposedly (according to PTI) Revis' reaction to Rex's comments was "That's crazy!" I guess that's one guy who hasn't been convinced by Rex's confidence!
Low expectations are a chronic pattern of short-term thinking. Those, who have no expectations from themselves, have no right to expect anything from others…. Please, what are you talking about? Setting expectations initiates the process for the playoffs. It’s his job to sit down with each player and clearly define what's expected of them. Which is winning the Super bowl!!!! When expectations are not clear, players may not play 100% Quiet? I don’t recall him ever being quiet regardless if they won or loss…. Okay, enjoy watching WWE wrestling while we get to watch our team on Saturday. Peace out.
I don't know why people care so much what he says. Hes a head coach with no inside voice you gotta take it with a grain of salt. People need to stop worrying about what rex says it's just his personlity and no jerk off in a forum is gunna stop him from talkin so squash this beef you got.
The bigger mystery is why more coaches do not openly state the way they feel about their team. It is SO refreshing to hear a coach openly display his faith in his team.
Personally I would have preferred playing the disrespected angle another week instead of going for the gusto...but Rex and the Jets' bravado kind of remind me of Davey Johnson and the Mets in the late '80's. Nobody like their trash-talking either, but they backed it up and became beloved.
I don't mind when Rex talks like this, but they need to back it up on the field. He will look really stupid if we can't beat the Bengals this week. This is just my opinion, but I think it would be more effective if Rex didn't say this stuff every week, but just when the Jets players really needed it. I think it doesn't mean much if Rex, or any coach, says this kind of stuff every week. Anyway, I'm not complaining. I'm a big fan of Rex and I know he's being honest and genuine, which is all you can really ask from him during interviews and press conferences. It sure beats Mangini's attitude
Why don't you go watch a nice quiet sport like figure skating or synchronized swimming. I'd much rather Rex's personality as a coach, then a emotionless robot Mangini type.
The danger of this is undermining future comments if you continually fail to meet expectations. People might take you less seriously. I am actually all for the "we can win the super bowl attitude," but to say you should be favored over Indy or San Diego is a bit much.
Who cares if people take you less seriously? It doesn't matter. The game is played on the field. If the gals want to take us less seriously - GREAT !!! Namath predicted the Jets would beat the Colts in the SB when the Jets were 17 pt. dogs. We won. Being confident in your team is a great thing. Expressing your confidence in your team is also a great thing. If you don't think you can win the game and win the Super Bowl you shouldn't be coaching or playing.
If the players take what you say less seriously because you've blown too much hot air, you can undermine your ability to motivate.
