Vernon Gholston is never ever going to do well because he doesn't want to. It doesn't even matter whether or not he's even able to play football, which he's not. He doesn't have the physical tool set, the technique, nor the intelligence to play. But regardless, he did shit in this league, and he got payed out the ass to do so. Why would he try to do anything in regards to improving his career now?
Chris Baker is the one that I always think about when the what if he signs with the pats fears start up with anyone. People were convinced that he was more than what we had seen out of him for years.
i don't agree with that. he was one of the more articulate people on the team. you could tell the kid was not a dummy. he also worked hard. no one ever knocked his work ethic. but that doesn't mean he has football instincts, and i think that's a big part he lacked. Especially when he was at linebacker, he would think and then react instead of just react. As far as physical limitations, i agree as far hip fluidity and what not. He's a stiff.....like most bodybuilders. Technique was definitely not good enough, partly because he never needed it in college. His bullrush was good enough to be his only move because of the competition level., something that should have been really evaluated during the scouting process the combination of all that, then having to learn a new position....was the reason he could never succeed. that said, i think he'll play in the NFL still. 4-3 DE on a struggling defensive team, he'll get a shot and a lot of playing time.
Also, Gholston had a role to play, and was drafted for that. He failed miserably, and had 3 years to prove himself. Woodhead didn't fit our system. Was he going to get carries over LT and Greene? No, or at least not enough to keep him around on the roster for 3 years when he never saw the field as a Jet
Vernon was given multiple opportunities to prove himself. Hell, I remember Rex putting him in against scrubs late in preseason games and he still couldn't do anything. Seems like he was a good teamate and tried from what I have read, he just doesn't have it for whatever reason. Perhaps a change of scenery and he will have some limited success, but if you can't make plays in a Rex Ryan defense, then what defense can you do it in?
I would personally be very happy if he came back to us at near-base salary. He can defintiely contribute.
He is going to do well somewhere in a 4-3. He doesn't fit our system. He can't play in space as an LB and he is too small to be a DE. Reminiscent of Hugh Douglas. Couldn't play the 3-4 but did great in the 4-3.
We didn't cut Belichick. We hired him as our HC and he wrote his resignation on a piece of napkin. I can't see Gholston having success as a 4-3 DE either. He'll need more than just a bull rush to have success there too.
So what if Rex won't say the truth, everyone else knows the guy was a miserable letdown and doesn't seem to care about the game. I just hope Vernon knows it.
well gholston was at least a clean kid and not a douchebag. I don't understand the insults at him, high draft picks bust out every year in the nfl. let the other fanbases insult our players, not us. never had a problem with gholston, perhaps the panthers or bears will pick him up.
I'd be happy if he came back and paid us his salary of the last 3 years and contributed like he was expected to.
Well, for the Jets at least, and starting with Vilma, the first rounders have been solid to becoming some of the best players at their relative positions. After a draft history that was always notorious for being one of, if not the worst, it's only sensible for fans to really hate on the colossal disappointment that was Gholston.
