Agreed. Unless McNabb hits the open market or the Patriots decide to let Matt Cassel loose, there is no QB on the market or on the Jets roster who gives them a better chance to win than Favre. That said, if Favre is back next year than Ryan needs to have the balls to break his consecutive games streak because it's painfully obvious that Brett can't hold up competently over a 16 game season anymore. And if the Jets decide to welcome Favre back they need to make him decide what he's going to do within the next few weeks, because the one thing that we can't afford this offseason (but is looking unfortunately likely) is the prospect of Favre's "will he or won't he?" game holding us hostage. As for Schottenheimer, I don't see any problem with trying to convince him to stay. He made some bad choices (namely abandoning the run for an ineffective pass game) but he's done some very good things during his time with the team and I don't see why he can't learn from the mistakes he's made. Unless there's a specific guy who Ryan had in mind, I don't see how keeping continuity on offense could really be that bad a thing for a rookie defensive minded HC to do.
I did agree with that whole Shotty reasoning, but then I started reading all the BS coming out of Jets camp. Mangini a control freak, and that Shotty might not have even been calling the plays. With all that said, I'm willing to give him another shot. Theres a reason less then 24 hours after the season we fired Mangini, there were things going on behind the scenes that we couldnt see. And when it comes to Farve, I'll say it again. If the play calling was better he would have been better. You cant ask a old aging QB to win games for you when you have one of the best running attacks in the NFL. If we ran the ball on every single down against the Seahawks we win that game. Now if Shotty called those plays, HE HAS TO GO! If Mangini was telling him what he wanted, then I want Shotty back for one more season.
You give him way too much credit..he didn't hire anybody, Johnson did and he didn't sign any FAs last year, Johnson told him to spend the money although he may have picked the names. What he did do all on his own is draft Gholston.
All better than Farve at this point in his career... he's done... you need to face it just like he does...
Man I'm so damn sick of you. So you're saying Tanny did nothing but draft Gholston? Man, give me a fucken break. I'm not even going to answer you, thats how stupid your response was. Yea lets blame him for the bad and give him NO credit for the good. Ok?
so he gets the blame for gholston(who i haven't giving up on yet)and no credit for the f.a. he signed or the new coach he hired, and all because your pissed abotu schotty.makes sense to me
Well said. Somebody needs to smack some sence into Woody. I'm going to be extremely disappointed if the Jets bring Favre back.
I'm talking about what he has done lately and that is nothing. You want to keep putting him on a pedestal, go for it. He should have been fired along with Mangini.
This is precisely why this team fails. Print this post. Next time you're tempted to say the Jets are cursed, read this to yourself.
Tell me why he should have been fired with Mangini. Why? He put more then a very solid team on the field. Mangini couldnt figure it out, thats why he's gone.
If Ryan's defense can get them to the championship game with a rookie QB, where do you think they can be be with a Hall of Fame QB who wants to end his career on a positive note. I expect that Woody will fly to see Brett and convince him to return at a lower salary with incentives. Woody really wants Brett here next year and maybe to open the stadium in 2010.
I hope you are right .. but fear its not in the cards unless some major Def UFA's and an unknown WR like Maclin appear on the roster before which is not feasible. If this team wanted to commit to the run they would trade for L Johnson [According to NFL Network's Adam Schefter, the Chiefs shouldn't expect any more than "maybe a second-round pick, probably a third" in return for Larry Johnson. LJ counts $8.2 million against the cap if the Chiefs keep him and $8.8 million if they deal him. Potential trade partners, however, would not be on the hook for any guaranteed money beyond his salary -- $5.5 million in 2009 and $7 million in 2010. Source: NFL.com ]. That is a bargain at 6 M per year. I think Ryan would control his extracurrilculars. Remember what the Ravens had with a troubled Jamal Lewis in '03. This would let Favre game-managed which he seemed happy with during week 11 pressers- and keep TJ strong. Of course Favre would have to (should have to ) rework his contract to make it cap friendly in '09 like back load it- or as you say pure incentives. He may do this if he wants the ring not the money.
Who cares if he is a HOF QB?! Why do people keep mentioning this.. like the ball will float better or defenders wont be able to defend it because the QB is HOF bound... Who gives a sh1t if he's going to the HOF??!?!!? The guy played a HUGE role in our demise this season... he threw 10 INTs and 2 TDs down the stretch. HOF my ass!! Oh wait my bad, I didn't realize that he wants to end his career on a positive note... nm, sign this BEAST!!!
Ryan had nothing to do with Jamal Lewis, he being a Defensive coach and Lewis being a running back. And also, fuck Larry Johnson. I would rather keep TJ and LW.
You say Tannenbaum has "done nothing lately". You say what he did all on his own was draft Gholston. I seem to remember him also drafting an excellent pass-catching TE in Keller late in that same round, less than a year ago. If you consider everything he has done as our GM, you will find oustanding FA acquisitions, generally outstanding drafting, not to mention his skill with managing the cap. But instead of noting the numerous accomplishments he's had as our GM, you mention the one potential bust (I still say "potential" as it is too soon to judge after one season). If you looked at Tannenbaum with an unbiased perspective, you would find the Jets' most successful GM ever at drafting (better than Parcells, better than many in the NFL), even if you do presume Gholston turns into the one inevitable bust (as drafting is an inexact science).
