Of course. As I said, I'm not an advocate of losing. But it's starting to look like we need to mortgage a future draft and go up and get the guy. I don't think it's fair to say this franchise doesn't want to do it. We did it with Sanchez. The problem is that teams that are usually sitting at the top are in need of said quarterback so they don't want to trade. This past draft was somewhat of an anamaly in that sense, and the Browns actually did need that quarterback yet stupidly traded it away. Hopefully Maccagnan shows some nuts sometime in the next couple years and goes up and gets his guy.
Perhaps we've been falsely blaming Joe Namath for selling his soul so the Jets could win the SB. Maybe it was Weeb, the owners and the whole FO who did that. This team has to be cursed. If nothing else, you'd think the odds would be that by now we'd at least have gotten lucky at some point. Even a broken clock is right 2 times a day. It's really disgusting. I'm really starting to lose hope for this franchise. If Mac winds up being a bust as a GM, then that will be it. I will be done with this joke of a franchise.
Namath didn't have to sell his soul. Super Bowl III was fixed. They needed to make the AFL appear legitimate so that they could sell the merger to the public a few years later.
We had a chance to draft Paxton Lynch, and we went defense again. This is why we stay at the bottom. McCagnan and Bowles need to be gone for intentionally setting us back with the signings of Revis and as much as I hate to say it, Fitz. Drafting Hackensuck did not help either. It is a shame that our owner who knows NOTHING about football has run this team into the ground.
In retrospect, we should have done whatever necessary to get Wentz and if that wasn't possible, Lynch should have been selected. Both of these guys have huge, accurate arms and high upside... Our draft current looks pretty bad: We got a fast but undersized 1st rd lber, a project 2nd rd qb, a slow but big 3rd rd lber, big but slow 4th rd CB, and then a bunch of reaches. When the saving grace for your draft was a punter and 2 rookie (Marshall/Anderson) free agent wr's, you got problems...
When you look at this roster, almost every position is going to need to be replaced or upgraded in 2 years (Outside of D Line and WR). Might as well start the slow and painful rebuild.
That's what happens after all those failed draft classes under Tannenbaum and Idzik to a lesser extent. Macc has added some pretty nice pieces over his 2 drafts. This is the danger of signing high priced free agents as well. More often than not, you're paying for past production versus future production. We are seeing high priced FA's faltering and regressing massively.
I would have been all in favor of trading the ranch to move up and get Wentz, but somewhat less so for Lynch. The problem was that we still had a bunch of holes in other areas, and by trading up, we wouldn't be able to fix those holes for years. Lee isn't undersized. I wish posters would stop with that nonsense. The NFL is a passing league now, not a ground and pound power rushing league. LBs need to be smaller, faster and quicker and better in coverage. Many of the top LBs in the NFL are Lee's size or smaller. Burris isn't slow. He may not be a burner, but he isn't slow, and he's shown excellent potential. Hack was a gamble, but with the D talent the team has, Mac thought that they wouldn't be in position to draft a topnotch QB without having to trade the ranch to move up. He was trying to be creative to insure that the team had a quality young starter. He (Hack or Mac) may both fail, but I can understand why Mac took him. I'm not ready to give up on Hack. Let 's see what he looks like when he gets his fundamentals straightened out.
I love these threads going on about who we should've traded up for, who we should've drafted, who we should've signed, and who we should've avoided in free agency. Thank you Captain Hindsight!
Your point is valid, but it's not always hindsight. Some of us really liked Teddy Bridgewater and were screaming for him before the draft. If we had Bridgewater we wouldn't have taken Hack and probably not Petty, either. Those two picks could have addressed needs in the secondary, OL or maybe even TE. That's just one example. Some of us follow the draft closely and identify players that we like and want the Jets to draft. When the Jets pass on those players to take another, and when the player the Jets took fails and the player that some of us wanted instead succeeds, it isn't hindsight.
Couldn't have said it better myself. The games & teams overall play hasn't changed in at least 10 years...more like 20. We as a fan base MUST implement change or it will be 20 more years of misery.
Sorry, I'm not trusting guys watching Youtube highlight compilations to draft for my team. Ever. You can throw out Bridgewater, but do you really want to go back and look at all of the pants on head stupid draft suggestions made by people around here? Remember Jarron Gilbert? A 300 lb DL who could jump out of a pool! People around here wanted us to take him early in the 2009 draft - like first round early. The Bears took him in the third round (what value!) and he played in 4 games and had ONE tackle before being released. Then he was on our PS, and then he was on Bills PS. He's out of the league now. For every hit on a guy like Bridgewater (jury is still out) for the prognosticators around here, there are 10 misses on guys like Gilbert, RGIII, Marquis Lee etc.. Sure, it's fun to discuss and analyze, but let's not pretend we are in any way qualified to make those decisions. Yes, our team drafts terribly, locks us into bad FA deals, and seems to have no guiding principles for the future. I've said it many times that that is a reflection of our wimpy owner's being swayed by an ADHD fanbase that has no patience for building a franchise by developing young talent ("Look - A big name FA! Sign this beast!"). As a result, we have no continuity, no consistency, and seem to start over every year. The fact that a large number of this fanbase feel qualified to make drafting decisions is further evidence that we are not digging out this mess anytime soon.
This year the weeks have been very hard at least for me to make my picks,,,,,but I just cannot see us going into Pitt and beating them there,,,,they have always had our number and our def facing big Ben is a scary thought . I will look on Wednesday and if nothing jumps off at me I will pick Pitt,,,,,,just like fantasy football I like starting my best guys regardless of who they play,,,,( :
Franchise QB or bust. When the Jets consistently have a top 10 QB they can legitimately be in the conversation for contenders. Until then we'll get these occasional teases and a ton of other crappy years.
The problem is U have not gone far enough back in NYJ history. Try 1968 & then add the name JWN to that year & U have a franchise QB for that year
