There are always those types, but you are selling the forum short. I can talk on this board about aspects of football that would get me mostly blank stares if I started talking about them to everyday Johnny Casual that asks you how the Jets did on Sunday. I could probably regurgitate what Steve Young and Matt Millen said on TV to him and he'd get what I was saying, though. Probably stuff from the guys on NFL Radio, too.
My problem w/ this team is the amount of overall talent we have, but the minimal return in terms of wins. -We have elite players at FS(Rhodes for his downfield coverage),CB(Revis),NT(Jenkins), LT(Brick as a pass protector), C(Mangold), WR(Edwards) KR(Washington) - we have solid and/or up and coming players at TE(Keller),Mlb(Scott AND Harris)CB(Sheppard) SS(Leonhard), RG(Moore)WR (Cotchery) OLB(Pace) - we have tough, saavy, successfully experienced veterans at LG(Faneca), FB(Richardson) RB(Jones) DE(Ellis) NB(Strickland) -We have highly talented and promising rookies at QB(Sanchez) and RB (Greene) W/ all these personnel factors..there is no reason we should play as poorly and as grounded as we often do. Is it coaching? Is it the overall franchise climate? I dont think it's the opposition. It's downright frustrating and ensues the notion of SOJ.
Rookie coach and Rookie qb. We can easily pin two losses on Sanchez and another on the ST (this past week). I don't think it's that they're playing 'poorly', it just seems as though things aren't coming together at the right time which is very understandable. Brand new defense and a rookie who started one season at college is leading the team. The losses to the saints and bills were on Sanchez playing poorly, the first miami game was on the defense and the second one was a fluke, the jets dominated that game but two KR's f-ed em over.
Yeah, I think a lot of the board is just frustrated. we wanted intsa-greatness, especially with the good start. I just think some reality has set in, that's all. It is hard to predict how the rest of the season goes. More growing pains or do we really get it all ironed out after the bye? I do expect us to be a serious contenter next year though. All the kinks should be taken care of by then.
A team never hurts its own future by stocking up on good "hogs" on both sides of the ball. Parcells knows this and all of his rebuilding stints always seems to start out with this idea in mind. We just need to keep adding quality depth on both lines and I think it would make almost all the other skill positions better by default (more time for the QB = more time for receivers to get open, more blockers dealt with upfront means LBs/Safteys can make more plays, hurried QBs mean CBs have more pick opportunities, etc).
Our QB needs to play more consistent. Aside from that, we have been outcoached in at least a couple of the losses. All but one of the losses came down to the final minute so if we were able to win a couple of those games, we're not even having this conversation.
Overall Short Term: Consistency. Like others have said, the JETS have talented players on this team, yet unfortunately play like a sum of their parts, as opposed to a greater whole. As a team which unit of the team shows up a strength or weak link that week. Identity. This is actually part of the consistency issue. Granted with a greenhorn rookie at the helm, there will be some offensive inconsistencies. That's just the nature of the beast, but we hear the "ground-n-pound" , but often things get a little too "cute". Not as much as last year, but Schotty and Rex need to be on the same page. Specifics: While the defense has been stout most of the time, they are lacking the big play. Not many sacks at all (aside from last week) and not many turnovers (Kerry Rhodes?). The pressure on the QB is good, but taking him down for a 6-10 yd loss on occasion would greatly help the Field position battle. The biggest immediate performance hole on offense was filled by B.Edwards. The majority of the rest of the issues go back to the identity part, and the trials and tribulations of starting a 22 year old QB (longterm, I think he will be a good QB). Although some protection could be better, and some game planning to put him into a better position to succeed. Hopefully the bye-week will help this. Personnel: Obviously the Trenches need to be addressed this offseason on BOTH sides of the ball. ( I wouldn't mind seeing 2 OL and a DL drafted). Another CB would be nice. Apparently the Eagles knew he was breaking down when they made the move for Samuels. A good CB across from Revis could make an opposing offense 1 dimensional, not to mention mask the lack of pass rush when there isn't a blitz. The parts are in place for this to be a GOOD team, now everything just needs to come together, and a few weak links upgraded to take it to the next level.
we could use a veteren backup qb, depth on the o-line, a slot receiver (which would create more depth at wr), better back up te, more depth on the defensive line, a new rush lb and more lb depth (could be provided with westermans improvement), a little depth at cb (litos will be cut and even if we re-sign him, hes always hurt) and safety we have good starters and solid depth with smith to sum it up, we have very good starters accross the board but we need better depth at pretty much every position sans rb (if tj comes back and leon is ready for next season)
Who is the arbitrator of valid or otherwise? Anyone wants to express their opinion they can and of course they will be challenged. Your opening thread was so obviously a troll as if anyone who thinks a 4 and 4 team that has lost 3 of their last 4 against the likes of Miami twice and Buffalo might not be a richly talented NFL team is out of their minds.
It wasn't a shot at you. It wasn't meant to be a shot at anyone. I just didn't want the thread to go to shit right away like many threads that could have generated good conversation often do.
Wasn't meant to be a shot at anyone? Your original post was dripping with scorn and certainly did not seem to be an attempt to generate good conversation.
I'm not really sure it is. If Rhodes had been in position to de-cleat him when the ball was coming down, he would have been 15 yards behind his own zone. Ginn just ran a nice route and it happened to be right along the invisible line that divides the zones Revis and Rhodes were responsible for. Pettine said that Revis was about to hand Ginn off to Rhodes when Ginn made the second cut and split between the 2 zones, not into KR's zone.
You know, we're not bad, I think our offense is pretty good, especially the run game, our defense is certainly good in both phases, and our special teams are very good as well. The only problem is those 3 units have not all played well yet at the SAME TIME. If we can get games where the offense plays to its potential, the d to its potential and special teams to their potential then we could beat anyone in teh league. For now we have to rely on the stuff that has been most consistent as of late, our run game and our defense. I think our defense needs to challenge itself and start scoring some points.
I don't think we need much more than depth on both lines. What we really need is for the offense, the defense, and/or the special teams units to stop shooting themselves in the foot at the most inopportune times possible. As for the draft, I'd like to see Eric Berry fall to us in a Michael Crabtree fashion (minus the holdout), but I know that's a pipe dream. Unless somebody like that gets close to us I don't want to see any trading up whatsoever.
