I agree thats the way to go, but Saleh is the one to make that decision. Does he have the leadership skills to 'bench' a close friend? Idk
You could say the same about LeFleur too.. Saleh may be too close to his subordinates and players and doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings by calling them out or demoting them. Explains why no one ever seems to pay a price for ineptitude but instead, get endless chances to make the same mistakes.
I'm not sure that would help matters. I'm pretty convinced that Saleh's reputation as a defensive guru is almost entirely because of Nick Bosa. The 49ers defense was pretty bad until they drafted him and it was pretty bad the season Bosa missed due to injury, when Saleh was still there. Saleh also isn't exactly the best in-game manager. Putting more on his plate would likely cause that to decline even more.
LaFleur was a lot better once he went to the booth. Out of everyone on the CS, I'm least concerned about him.
Yeah... Saleh's time is better spent thinking up with lame-ass slogans. I'm not a fan of the defensive scheme we run... hopefully with the added talent it will start to produce results. 'Cause right now we downright suck... and it's gonna hinder the growth we hope to see on offense. Time of possession... turnovers... defensive td's... we're lousy. https://nflpickwatch.com/nfl/stats/teams/turnovers/total/TurnoverDifferential/true
Between the two, LeFleur has the most upside as the offense occasionally shows flashes of what it could become. Ulbrich is the one who should be on the thinnest ice. Too much talent on that unit to play that badly..
Going off topic a little, but has anyone heard that the Patriots wont be naming an OC this season, and right now its Matt Patricia calling the offensive plays. BB must be busting a gasket or something. We got to beat them this season.
I had suggested last year that Saleh needed to shake things up on his staff by moving guys around, not even necessarily firing anyone. If you get demoted but get to keep your job it should let you know you need to up your game and that you're lucky to have that job. The heat is on!
Jets X factor does a really great article on the jets scheme, weaknesses. dependence on talent and what to expect this year. Really great article. If you are going to read one article today this should be the one. Even if you hate the Jets there is a lot here for you too. The article was too big to copy the entire thing and I had to divide it into 3 posts. https://jetsxfactor.com/2022/08/24/system-personnel-game-planning/
That was a really good article, Noam. Thanks for posting. I'm not expecting much from the defense this year. I think they will be suspect to the big play. I'm hoping that they can at least apply more pressure to the QB and come away with more turnovers than last year. Otherwise we are in for a long season on defense. Again.
Thanks. The article might not have been optimistic but it was educational. If we can be average to below average or say the 20th best defense that would be a huge improvement. But, football is complimentary and every little bit the defense improves makes the offense better and every little bit the offense improves will make the defense better. Being around 20th in both offense and defense would be a huge upgrade IMO and significant progress from last year.
I agree. I really don't understand the stuff they are doing on defense. If it is this complicated to pick up, then there's simply NO hope. I expect to see opening day look just like ANY shit game on defense from last year, guys out of place, WIDE OPEN receivers, missed tackles. Not buying the preseason vanilla shit. It shows. Cover 3 is prevent...its trash on every friggin play, and you can pick it to shreds. I hope im wrong, because I will come back and admit it too.
Good article^. Really breaks down why FS and LB are such holes still though hopefully with the infusion of talent at other positions there is marked improvement. But yikes, also reminds me of how bereft of talent their defense was last year! I'm excited about Breece Hall, but this article is a reminder that they passed on Nakobe Dean in the 2nd. For a team in dire need of LB talent and an ultra-talented LB prospect in the fold, it's surprising they didn't take him. It's not like they have an issue with undersized LBs!
The Xfactor article lays it out pretty well... we don't have the personnel to run Cover-3 Press/Bail effectively. Maybe it will get results with more pressure at the line... but I really wished JD would have addressed the linebacker position with more than Kwon Alexander. I remember last years Atlanta game where Kyle Pitts just chewed us up.
Excellent article! Thanks Noam! This really does lay out the basic problem(s) with the Jets defense. And while I do like Saleh, I really don't like coaches who insist on "scheme over player". A good coach should be able to adjust to fit the players he has, not stick with a scheme that only fits players he wished he had. See: Gase, Adam for a recent example.
