I don't think defenses will care what Engstrand's offense looks like. I think they will see the Jets as they always do, good running attack, poor passing attack, therefore defend against the run, make Fields beat you through the air. Of course, not every team will be able to execute this plan but the good ones will.
Really? Are we running RPO? Are we runjjng Wishbone? Are we running out of DET’s offensive set? It matters greatly, especially since we haven’t had a QB in this mold ever.
When Fields was on Chi and Pitt, how did opposing defenses play against him? Note that the Jets drafted the speedster WR in the 4th round in order to keep defenses honest. He can't catch so well, but opposing defenses will have to play for the deep ball.
Obviously I'm not a DC, but if I were, I would not concede anything. I would make the Jets prove they could beat me deep. After I get scorched a few times, then I would make the necessary adjustments. Or, if I'm later in the Jets schedule and I see they have a legitimate deep threat game going (and it doesn't have to be the guy they drafted in Rd 4, it could be Wilson or Gipson), then I'm going to deploy my defense to try to stop it. Defenses have been playing the Jets this way for years. That's why we have never been able to get a consistent running game going even with good RBs. When a team knows you have trouble throwing the ball, they can concentrate on stopping the run.
