Because it's not realistic, and not the best use of our resources. I think I've shown that in my posts.
This thread is highlighting something ive long been at odds over w the majority of other jet fans for about a decade now. There is constant resistence to adding prime offensive skill talent in the name of adding inferior cheaper players and/or overemphasis on the OL. For YEARS this team’s biggest weakness has been offensive skill but anytime an opportunity arises for an upgrade folks dont want the guy due to the price tag, minimizing the position they play or bc our OL arent the mid 90s Cowboys. Even back in 09-10 when we had the best OL in football folks thought it could be better & wanted to upgrade both Moore & Slauson.Nobody saw skills as a weakness & looked how that turned out. Yes you need OL.But you need skilll too.Its not one over the other..its BOTH.And since there are no true quality OL set for FA..we should be taking aim at the likes of Bell who is a clear upgrade & a damn fine player. Not wait 2 years for the OL to fall into place before hoping skill players are available for the taking. Mark Barron is a solid RB..but hes not in the same stratosphere as Bell.Bell transcends the RB position bc hes a threat lined up anywhere on the field as a receiver & if youre a defense you must account for him. You can say hes too expensive, say hes selfish, say he doesnt have much tread left..but tying it to him being an RB and saying we need to wait for the OL to be stacked before addressing the skills is flawed thinking in my estimation; If Bell keeps teams from blitzing sam bc they know hes a great blocker or can beat them on blitz busters froom all over the field doesnt that HELP the OL?? Just saying.
I don't think it's a tough call at all. I believe in taking some calculated risks, and that it takes some risk to achieve greatness, but I think it's too early to swing for the fences, and I don't that Bell is the right player to swing for the fences on. IMO if you're going to swing for the fences with a player, it had better be one who is younger, has less of an injury history, is not likely to get suspended, and one who isn't going to hold out and want even more money. There are still too many holes and too little depth on the team to swing for the fences. IMO the Jets need steady progression next year, but it would be a mistake to be impatient and try to rush the rebuild or swing for the fences too soon. Bell could also make Mac and the Johnsons think the teams is better than it actually is. 2020 is supposed to be a great draft for RBs. RB is the easiest position for a player to come into the NFL, start and play at a high level. I'd rather get a great young RB prospect to pair with Sam, not one who is rapidly nearing the end of his career. IMO edge rusher, OL and WR HAVE to take priority over RB. We only will have 2 decent WRs in Enunwa and Anderson. We desperately need at least 2 more WRs. We either need a new LG or a new C, and ideally need a new LT, and we need better depth across the OL. Injuries almost always happen to OL. Protecting Sam and giving him good targets is more important than signing a diva RB who will want the ball all the time. That would also make our offense much more predictable and easy to stop. Other teams could sell out to stop Bell, and then what's Sam gonna do, throw it to Deontay Burnett or Charone Peake? McGuire is a serviceable RB as is Crowell. Add in Tevin Coleman, Peyton Barber, or Mark Ingram and we'd have a nice RB by committee, and if got anything out of Cannon it would be gravy.
You seem to be forgetting Bell's age, his injury history, and the likely possibility of his getting suspended again. Even if he stayed healthy, not suspended, and had a great season, he's not gonna make the Jets SB contenders. That's wild-eyed fantasy imo. He's also the last player you'd want to have a lot of money in the last years of his contract.
All of this is moot because of the way he turned his back on his team. If the Jets pay him what he wants and he pulls this stuff again, the Jets will continue to be the joke of the league. If this was ANY other play maker in their prime, I sincerely doubt anyone would be hesitant giving the player a blank check. This is exactly why I don't want Manny Machado on the Yankees. I much rather have Harper, who, from all accounts is an asshole, but an asshole who plays to win -- over anyone who "dogs" it.
I think there are good reasons to not want Bell.Thats not my point. Its this idea of being all in at OL at the expense of upgrading other offensive positions & minimizing the impact of skill players
Sorry, I thought your intent was to show that we could sign him and spread his cap hit out. You even made a comment later that if he could get us a SB, sign him. I'm sure there are some posters here who think signing Bell would give us a SB win. Didn't mean to twist your words. I just didn't see anything where you said you definitely were against signing him.
If we could afford to make all of these moves I agree that this is probably the smartest way to go into next season. Lawrence is the guy to target here. He's been more consistent than Clowney and that's my one fear about Clowney. Go with Tate and Humphries. Yeldon hasn't shown me anything as a pro to even think he'd be an upgrade over what we currently have. The other 3 RB's I like though. Trent Brown and Mitch Morse is a nice upgrade on the line. Jared Cook is a big time pass catching TE. I have to look at the corners you listed although Darby seems like the best out of that group. Nice work here.
Of course we have to address skills. Does that mean you throw big money that will tie up a large percentage of your cap for at least 4 years to someone who is likely to be in sharp decline in 2 to 3 years and hasn't taken a snap in over a year? To me the answer is are we a Bell away with a knock it out of the park draft, retaining the FA's from our own team we want to keep and filling in with other FA's who may be available? The other thing to consider is we are likely to be hiring a new coaching staff this offseason and maybe a new GM. That means next years team is likely in year 1 of a new program. We are really looking at Bell being highly productive the year after next.
I think if you think next year is a SB year with Bell go for it. I think that's insane. My point is Bell will tie up cap space for years if we sign him. Your point coupled on our own FA's coupled with Bells signing impacting our ability for the next several years has to be considered. If you think Bell makes us a SB contender next year I would go for it. I think that's insane particularly with a new Head coach and program. Am I definitely against it? That depends on how much and how long. I think he's going to want at least Todd Gurley money. I don't think he'll get it but that's the trick in all of this.
I would definitely like Ingram and he would be MUCH cheaper,,,I hate Tevon Coleman but I would make a phone call to Peyton Barber----ps No to Yeldon
Sooner or later a team has to have a dynamic playmaker on offense.Nobody ever wants to prioritize drafting one including the team so therefore it is essential that situations like this Bell one are given a long hard look. Within that, if a guy as good as he is available there have to be reasons outside that of on the field to make him available to begin with & if we just immediately shut ourselves off for the risks associated..chances are you end up going another season possibly more w still no dynamic entity on the offense.sooner or later the team has to take a chance. Now if youre telling me the team is gonna prioritize skill EARLY on draft day & have put the scouting time in to support it..ill take that over Bell any day of the week. But thats not what this franchise does nor what this fan base typically wants. Bell was thought to be a risk dating back as far as his draft day..im a MSU fan so i know him well. Hes defied the odds many times over & i wouldnt bet against him.He does too many things well.If he looses his speed he still has his power & change of direction if he cant pass receive he can still pass block like crazy.Hes a multi faceted weapon than even if he loses a skill or 2 can still help.
Well to be fair, Ingram just turned 29 today and Bell will be 27 in 2 months, so it's just over a 2 year difference in age. I know Bell had the last year off, but Ingram has low wear and tear for his age. Ingram will likely cost a little more than half of what Bell wants in salary, so there's that as well. Ingram has 1305 rushing attempts in 104 games, while Bell has 1229 in 62. The Steelers beat the crap out of him. Ingram also has a slightly higher YPC than Bell, his last 2 years were on par with Bell's best in YPC. I know Bell is a better talent than Ingram, but overpaying would be required to get him here and I feel there is injury risk after having a year off, plus other red flags relating to his attitude. I wouldn't be upset in the least if the Jets got him, but I think the Jets have a crapload of holes to fill and should be a little bit more conservative at this point with just 29 on the roster. Who knows, though, maybe Magic Mike can work it all in.
The way I see it is simple. If Mac is GM and we hire an inexperienced coach, we have no business with Bell. The moment things break down, he'll dog it and we'll be an even bigger joke. Now if we hire Harbaugh or McCarthy and put him in charge of the front office that's different. Because those guys actually command respect.
I agree with what your saying about our needs, the problem is you can't just go sit on Santa's lap and say I would like a #1wr, 1 OT, 1 C, A PASS RUSHER, 1 CB, ETC. FA crop this year is terrible . Sometimes you have to take what is available or save your cap $. Right now Bell is available, either sign him or put your money away for 2020. Don't just spend on players that are 2nd & 3rd tier players. Now if there were a few GOOD players at positions of need I would make sure we could afford them before we sign Bell, but it is very rare to have so many TOP TIER FA AVAILABLE. Example the best WR available in FA is Golden Tate after that there is nothing.
The JETS were one of the BEST rushing teams in the NFL.... with the threat of Mark Sanchez at QB Win the trenches.... win the game Bell is a good player, I just dont think think he's a good fit for the makeup of this team (when you factor in cost, etc) at this stage
I think Bell is a good fit except that if we continue to struggle he isn't going to give 100% like Powell did all these years.
