I can't remember the source, perhaps thejetsblog and whatever source they quoted, but I remember hearing that as well.
It was a JETS blog. GangGreenNation. http://www.ganggreennation.com/2012/5/3/2996025/why-the-jets-likely-passed-on-bobby-massie Why the Jets Likely Passed on Bobby Massie by John B on May 3, 2012 8:19 AM EDT It was a bit surprising during the third round of last weekend's NFL Draft that the Jets passed on Ole Miss offensive tackle Bobby Massie. Right tackle is a glaring need for the Jets, and Massie likely would have been better than Wayne Hunter and Vladimir Ducasse on day one. There might have been something else at play here. Sports Agent Blog each year rounds up the agents for each drafted player. Massie's representation provides a dead giveaway as to why the Jets passed. 112. Arizona – Bobby Massie (T – Mississippi) – Agent: Schwartz & Feinsod They would be the same Schwartz and Feinsod that represent Darrelle Revis. They are the same agents Mike Tannenbaum famously with television cameras in front of him stated did not seem like human beings at times. The Jets hate dealing with them. Working with the duo on a contract for Revis is a necessity, but the team has let some of their other clients like Chris Baker and Marques Murrell go in recent years. I am sure this was not the only consideration. The Jets probably liked the guy they took in the third round better, but you cannot count out the possibility Massie's representation played a role in the decision making.
So much for: "this isn't personal, it's business". I just hope Tannenbaum doesn't hate other agents to the point that he'd do something spiteful like say, not drafting a guy or signing a FA because you don't like his representation. Heaven forbid..
If I'm not mistaken, didn't a bunch of teams pass on Massie and he was drafted much later than anticipated? Besides, right now Massie is a back up on the depth chart behind Jeremy Bridges, who's not much better than Hunter. So saying he'd come in and be starter on day one is a bit deceptive. Honestly, I didn't see any RTs in the draft aside from Kalil that could come in and start game 1 right out of college. That's rare. You guys forget this already? Bridges was not that much better than Hunter last year and Massie can't even win the starting job from him? It would probably be the same situation had we drafted him. Linesman usually take at least a year to develop. They drafted Hill because they liked him and thought he could fill the void that Edwards left. Not because Massie has the same agent as Revis.
It was moreso in the context of completing ignoring the RT position in the draft until the 6th round when they took Robert Griffith. Besides,.....not much better than Hunter, but how much worse? I'd rather insert a 23yr old rookie may have some upside & getting at worst the same level of play to our current 31yr old RT who has completely bottomed out.
All a ruse my friends, the brain trust is playing possum with these preseason games. Just wait until the games count and Sparano unleashes holy hell on the Bills...
All you need to know about Serby. He was stuffed in a locker long after he finished high school. Loser.
Yeah, this is the point about Hunter often lost in the discussion. At this stage of his career, what reason is there to expect any improved play from him? He needs to learn some technique he hasn't already learned? He's going to be more physical, faster, anything that is LESS likely as he ages? No. He is what he is. NO upside.
His post game quote after the Giant game "What can I say? I've got to get better or else they're going to find someone else. That's the name of the game" was borderline offensive. The guy had 8 months to improve from last year's nightmare,....and after an entire offseason to try and redeem himself, I see nothing. He might even be worse than last year! And he thinks that 3 weeks to go before game 1 is enough time for him to "get better"? Too late, Wayne. That ship should be leaving the dock without you. My only concern is if the Captain has enough balls to make you walk the plank if you can even board.
It's easy to slap Hunter here, but the truth is that he's probably doing everything he can to keep that job at the moment. It's not lack of effort that's holding him back it's lack of skills. Everybody hates the fact that he gets up after every failure and seems not to be fazed by it. Well, news flash, that's what good players do also most of the time in their infrequent failures. Not letting the last play effect the next one is almost a mantra in football. The issue with Wayne Hunter at RT is not on Wayne Hunter. It's on the people who keep putting him out there expecting something to change. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is one of the definitions of stupidity.
Wayne Hunter is Vernon Gholston part II. The guy flat out sucks but because Tanne overpaid him we hold onto him hoping 1 day he wakes up and shows up as a legit OL man. Not gonna happen. The NYJETS are also scared to pull the trigger to cut him and bring in someone elese who might be worse. Imagine the reaction.
How the hell did you come up with this analogy? An aging journeyman, forced into a starting role by default is a sequel to an overrated college prospect taken 6th overall in the draft, given a Brinks truck worth of cash that NEVER worked out?
The NYJETS dont wanna part with an investment they made. Wayne Hunter was overpaid just like Gholston was.
