I assume Mitre, unless they think that Ivan Nova is ready. Yankees lead 5-3 now, by the way. Best part is that Derek Jeter is finally showing some signs of life.
I'm never shy about criticizing Girardi when he fucks up, so it seems only fair to give him credit for a great call today. When Pettitte had to leave the game in the 3rd, most managers would've gone immediately to a long reliever who could give them a few innings. Girardi brought in his best guy (Robertson) to stop the game from getting away early. Ballsy move. Great call.
As per ESPN.com, Mitre is scheduled to start on Saturday. Let's hope he gets it done he's been solid so far this season, although hasn't pitched very much.
Pettitte out 4-5 weeks. Now it hurts even more that Cashman couldn't pull off a deal for Lee. I'm sure they will have to overpay for somebody now. I doubt Mitre can get it done. http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/news/story?id=5390465
Well if he sticks with Mitre I'm sure you'll rip Cashman for not bringing in someone better, and coincidentally, if he brings in someone better I'm sure you'll call it 'overpaying'. Either way, you won't be happy. We know your schtick.
I doubt they overpay for anyone. Cashman's already said that Lee was the only pitcher for whom he'd move Montero, so Oswalt's probably out of the picture. After him, there just aren't many quality arms on the market--it's a symptom of so many tight division races. Very few teams are ready to start selling pieces. I suppose that the Yankees could go for a Brian Bannister/Jake Westbrook/Brett Myers type, but it's unclear whether any of those guys would represent a real upgrade over Mitre or Nova in anything but name value.
Ted Lily would be an option for you guys, cheap, experienced, performing OK. Certainly an upgrade over Mitre.
No way. Lilly's velocity is down, he's striking out fewer guys and walking more. He's been rather lucky this year. Mitre's actually looked quite good this year. Two years out from elbow surgery, too, which is about on schedule.
I saw Lily's name floated today. Myers as well. I'm with Cappy, go Mitre. Besides, according to what I've read, Pettitte isn't that bad and they put him on the 15-day as a precaution. The good news is, taking Pettitte's spot was Albaladejo, who I've been calling for for weeks now. So the question is, who will Mitre replace? My hope is Gaudin. I really can't take watching that guy anymore. I've been out of commission the last few days. Does anyone know what the deal was with Burnett? Was it anything worse than a strained vagina?
