pass. this guy is no more proven than Geno and we need all the picks we can muster. theres no reason to go after him when theres other more tested veterans out there in free agency, that we can give NOTHING up for.
Not give up. But you have to have a backup plan. You can't take 3-4 years to find out about Geno and then come to the conclusion he isn't the answer. Idzik will get canned if thats the case
The QB position should constantly be talked about until it's clear we have our guy. If you have questions about Geno you don't let things play out. You bring in more competition.
I agree with this. Even if Geno does pan out, the Jets will need a backup QB. If he only proves to be backup quality, then they're gonna need a starter. Still, unless Bridgewater falls to them or unless they're that high on Manziel, Boyd or another of the QBs, I don't think they should or will take one in the 1st round. Drafting another QB in the 2nd round or lower would show Geno that he still has to earn the job, and would give competition, as well as the vet they sign.
Ideally the Jets get one of the sounder B+ prospects like Murray, McCarron or Mettenberger in the 3rd or 4th round. You want a guy who has fairly sound mechanics to compete with Geno next year because it gives the Jets a real option if Geno just isn't getting things squared away by the time camp rolls around. Between that guy and Geno odds are good the Jets have their starter and backup for the next few seasons. That also gives the Jets 3 or 4 high picks to get playmakers and maybe a safety to sit in the middle of the defense for awhile instead of two years tops like all the Jets recent safeties.
I don't think the scenario you laid out results in the bolded at all. If Geno doesn't have things squared away, then that's a problem and a 3rd or 4th round QB, good mechanics or no, traditionally is not a long-term answer in the NFL. If we go into next year with Geno and a 3rd round prospect, I fear next year will look a lot like this year. At this point, I'm all about an unspectacular NFL vet with Cutler as a pipe dream. I'm sure as hell not trading a 2nd rounder for inexperienced Kirk Cousins, who will likely get eaten alive by our lack of weapons and diminishing O-line.
Murray and Mettenberger just tore their ACL's. they're not going to be competing with anyone next year. Still would need to bring in someone else.
Murray and Mettenberger will be playing in 7 or 8 months. That's about how long it takes to rehab an ACL given current medical tech. Both of them came out of a pro set and won't have to make huge adjustments to the WCO like Geno had. So he gets a few months to get things squared away in the off-season and then he's dealing with somebody who can run the offense without learning it from scratch. The Jets probably want to pick up a McCown or Charlie Whitehurst or Shaun Hill or Tarvaris Jackson to compete with Geno in the spring and early summer. If he's not clearly better than them then there's a real competition in camp between the Geno, the vet and the rookie. That's what the Seahawks did two years ago and it was a smashing success. If the Jets want to do anything next year they're dependent on Geno to step up or on finding somebody clearly better than him to play, either in a caretaker role (the vet) or a breakout role in the second half (the rookie).
Geno looks like dog poop, yet even I cannot give up on him yet. He has arm talent and maybe, just maybe, he can be developed...
Draft a QB. Enough of this backup from other team bullshit. Matt Flynn and Kevin Kolb are prime examples.
I think we definitely need to bring in another realistic starting QB next season, but I'm not sure giving up 2 #2's for Cousins is the best idea. I'll be paying attention to him the last two weeks. At this point is would be a really ballsy move IMO. Sometimes you have to take big risks to get big rewards, but big risks get GM's fired when they don't work.
If Shanahan is on the move and ends up in either Houston or Oakland, it's likely he'll find a way to bring Cousins along with him if he continues to do well in his "audition."
I hope we don't draft Aaron Murray - he reminds me of Chase Daniel coming out of school. Mettenberger is an intriguing prospect. Absolutely no to McCarron. I'm looking for our QB depth chart to look like this Shaun Hill - Geno Smith - Carr / Fales / Mettenberger I hope we draft one of those 3 QBs
I never at all expected for the Jets to compete this year with Geno taking the snaps...and those that did were living a fantasy and are probably the ones that want to drop him like a lead balloon. Lets just have multiple 1 year QB plans - that would be unique.
Don't give up anything for cousins, he is unproven. Go to the draft with all if your picks on the table, fill the skill positions on offense and see what QB falls to you in the draft.
I agree. Whoever the QB will be is gonna need some quality receivers to throw the ball to, and this team needs a FS desperately. The one addition I'd make is to also sign a vet like Hill or McCown.
