Yeah, he's really a prototype 3-4 DE who's just not a high sack guy. Often he gets them up the middle. I think with the addition of Williams, Sheldon's the guy that get's the most sacks....and hopefully one of the OLB's that Bowles can get going. Hopefully team sacks go up...a lot
He had double digit sacks about 3 seasons more recently than Suh did. I guess Suh doesn't deserve to be paid as much as an edge rusher.
His salary sure doesn't reflect his role as a run stopping backup type LB who doesn't play special teams.
i dont see the need to cut him. and we HAVE gotten younger there. we just drafted mauldin. and i think having pace to help mentor him isnt the worst thing in the world. let pace go next year
exactly. pace wont preven mauldin from getting on the field if mauldin deserves the plays. and having a vet to rotate in and help him isnt a bad thing
Don't cut vets until the young guns show you that they're ready to step in. Also, let's look at Pace's role within this defense as a whole. There are play-makers all over the D-Line & the corners. The LB & Safeties just need to be steady/decent. Unless Mauldin just lights it up in training camp, I think Pace should get one more year. I think it's more realistic for Mauldin to get his first shot at 1st string in 2016. Every offseason we think our draft picks are all studs but let's not forget Mauldin is a 3rd rounder. Not a stud 1st round prospect like Leonard Williams.
Poor Rex he's a great defensive genius. So long as he has Pro Bowl corners. Most teams didn't because there just aren't that many. And were able to do hell of a better job with their secondaries than he did. Despite injuries and going with scrubs. Good coaches can make chicken salad out of chicken shit. All we heard all season long with good personnel on defense and many 1st round picks was excuses. His schemes were predictable. He got burned big time. Good OCs could figure him out easily.
there is a difference between not having pro bowl corners and having the leagues worst corners hell we started the year with 2 safties at corner
Take a look at corners signed by other teams during last season due to injuries. Walls and Williams were much better than most of those guys. We didn't sign an elite cover corner. There weren't many available. Actually Idzik tried to sign the two best FA corners in 2014 and thought he had a deal with Vontae Davis. Rex's inane blitzes on 3rd and long exposed the secondary. Everybody knew it was coming.
rex had to blitz, giving qbs time to throw on a terrible secondary is not an option. it was the best of a bad situation. no team has worse corners, or worse safties
He didn't have to blitz. All the time. Esp in predictable situations. His schemes sucked. His philosophy was for shock and awe. And every good OC in the league had him totally figured out. Other teams like the Steelers were also going with scrubs due to injuries and didn't expose their Dbs the way he did. And Walls and Williams, a good pickup aren't crap. Idzik did sign an experienced and decent CB in Patterson but the guy is moron.
Keep Pace around while Mauldin develops. Gut Babin, Pace is more versatile, and younger by a year even though he has more years of experience
