I'd like to see a FA at: 1) Either RG or RT 2) At least one LB Even if the Jets draft well, I don't see how they can secure that right side of the OL. Howard is a huge improvement from WFH but he's really average or slightly below average player. Moore is gonna retire. Jets need some type of veteran stability out there because opposing defenses are all gonna exploit that weak link in the OL easily. When it comes to LB, DeMario is only going to be a 2nd year player. Would like to see a vet out there with him for just 1-2 season. Even if Jets draft a good LB prospect, I don't think it's realistic to expect a rookie to step up so early in his career. Both kickers MUST be resigned.
well the GM in me says to lay off the free agency pills and begin to right the ship thru selective roster cuts and shrewd drafting....... HOWEVER - the super bowl is in NJ and does anyone think that the jets will go all in for an opportunity to host it. take the excitement we generated in 09/10 and dangle a "home" superbowl in front. me thinks that may be too much for tanny and woody to ignore.
I have to agree with you. Coming into this season, I thought that this year would be a push year with the ultimate goal being the Super Bowl next year. But, seeing as how things turned out, well, who knows...
I saw a mock draft that had the Jets taking Mingo out of LSU in the first round. I hope that's not what will happen, it just doesn't fit, even as a project to turn him into a linebacker. I think he's relied too heavily on just outspeeding his college counterparts, not sure that will translate well to the nfl. As far as linemen, I think there's a tackle out of Michigan and a guard out of A&M or Bama that is supposed to be pretty good, but I may have that screwed up. if you wanna go receiver in the first, maybe that kid out of California. Sorry for the lack of names, memory is failing me.
It will be to much for them to ignore, I expect us to make alot of roster moves cutting and signing players all over the board
I like Jeff Cumberlands potential he looks really good at times and i hope we keep him, We need to replace Gates and Schielnz with better more reliable recivers with better hands. A veteran guy like Greg Jennings would be a good fit so would Joshua Cribbs he has amazing speed. Anthony Spencer at linebacker after we cut Bart Scott would be an upgrade even Chase Blackburn would be an upgrade. Is MJD a free agent next year???Matt Moore to compete for the starting QB job would be a smart move, I rather have him starting then Sanchez to be honest. Moore has looked really reliable at times and im sure he doesn't want to go back to Miami where he has no chance at starting unless Tannehill gets hurt
Free agents pick their new teams for 3 reasons 1. They want to play for contenders The Jets are NOT contenders and look to be in a rebuilding phase soon. Not where you wanna go to get your ring 2. They like the environment (physical location and locker room situation). New York is great and might be a pull for people, but the locker room looks like a circus and not the best place to work. 3. They follow the MONEY We are kinda low on cap space so it would be hard to give them too much. Jets are not in good condition to pick up any big name free agent, even if we got one we will be paying them crazy money to get them to come here.
He would be awesome at RT, and a waste of talent at LG. He's also probably going to be way out of the Jets price range if he goes to FA.
I would focus the offseason on re-signing a few guys on Defense, and the rest of it on Offense. Re-signs on Defense would include Landry, Devito, and Revis (unless he is just totally unreasonable, in which case no choice but to trade). On Offense, i'd let most of our FA's walk, unless we can sign reasonably. I would not invest in Keller. With any FA we do sign, i want to see a high motor character type player. We need a new attitude there. Focus would be QB placeholder, Guards, maybe RT, TE, and a play maker either WR or RB. Essentially everywhere. Crippling problem is Sanchez and Holmes guaranteed money. We need both those guys off the team and our cap in my opinion.
There's no easy solution to Sanchez & Holmes salary. Either trade them to someone else willing to take on the money (which is extremely unlikely), or trade for players with similar contracts, or just keep them until their contracts expire. Sanchez & Holmes are pretty much guaranteed a spot on next season's roster.
That is our biggest problem going into next season. We need a new infusion, new attitude. Those guys kill our cap room too.
Any FA the Jets sign had better either be to a one-year deal or cheap. This team doesn't need any high-cost players that aren't guaranteed to contribute in 2014 and beyond.
None of you guys are making any sense. You want to sign top tier FA's to one year , small money deals. Yea ok that'll happen. The jets will have to over pay for any legit FA bc of how much of a shit show this team is. Who the fark would want to come here , catch passes from the sancheeze and be coached up by Rex. Seriously , who? We need to take cues from the Pats. They are superior to us on every level. The own us. We should take notice and maybe we could learn something.
There is very little cap space next year to sign anyone of consequence, when you figure in rookie payscale for the draftee's next year. At most there will be about 15 million to fill 20 or so roster spots. and that's with cutting the dead weight and carrying over 5 million from this year. of course with some contract restructuring we could open cap space. There won't be any impact free agents this off season. Maybe 2014.
You could cut Holmes and save 1 million or so in 2013. Trade comes out a little better but good luck finding a buyer for him as he's over priced, but it's possible since his downturn in production some teams would pass off as being a victim of a bad QB. Sanchez you can't even cut in 2013, he goes from a 12 million cap hit to over 19 million cap hit if you cut him, and with his contract there is noone on this gods green earth you could trade him to even if you got the other guy REALLY REALLY drunk. Sanchez is a bottom 5 QB getting paid top 5 QB money.
