I bet boston wishes they got Greg or Simon.

    Oh give me a break.

This isn't 2004, they don't have Curt Schilling in peak form. They don't have near the lineup they had that year either. they also haven't won a playoff game since 2004. There is no question theywant the division and want it bad, they see it slipping away and maybe now they have realized they will blow it so they want to just get ready for october but they want the division badly.

Aren't you the one that is always harping on the fact that nothing matters but October? I'll save you the trouble of thinking about it. Yes, you are.

No, but they have the 2007 Josh Beckett who is as good as or better than 2004 Schilling (who wasn't in top form then either, remember the ankle injury?). Schilling has also posted a 3.55 ERA since coming off the DL at the start of August. He's only 2-4, but he's pitched pretty well. Better than the 2004 Pedro in fact. And if Francona didn't leave him in too long in the Yankee game, the numbers would be even better. Matsuzaka in the regular season has been better than 2004 Derek Lowe, but the postseason Lowe will be hard to match. Overall though, the rotation is at least as good as the '04 rotation. The bullpen is also a LOT better, with a 3.20 ERA in '07 as opposed to a 3.92 ERA in '04.

As for the offense, it's not all that far off from '04.

    2004- .282 BA, .360 OBP, 111 OPS+
    2007- .278 BA, .361 OBP, 109 OPS+

The runs per game are down from 5.85 to 5.31, but the pitching is also better, with a 3.88 ERA in 2007 compared to 4.18 in 2004. Also, the Sox are third in runs this year, and that's with Manny getting off to a slow start and missing the last month, and Ortiz having a slow start as well. With the pitching they have, once Manny comes back, the offense will be more than adequate.

As for you arrogant assumption that you know what the Sox want, when did the division start slipping away? When they started putting the Bobby Kielty's and Brian Corey's in games more, and letting Gagne try to work out of the jam. You have it backwards. They didn't start resting guys when the lead got smaller. The lead got smaller when they starting resting guys.

Hahahahahah i got a big lol at that one.

In the words of Bobby Heenan, I hate to say I told ya so, but I told ya so. Said it in July the Tigers would hit a wall and the yankees would stroll into October like we do every year.

Yeah, I just looked over his numbers for each of his performances, and you're probably right, he may have earned 10 wins, 11 tops. That's fine. He also missed the entire first two months. That's maybe another 4-5 wins. It's an arguable point in either direction that he could have had 15 wins this year, had he pitched out of Spring Training.

This doesn't change my stance on his worth though. He's been tutoring Hughes all year, which can't be discounted. He also had that game where he was pitching a gem, and still hit a batter in retaliation. That's a "ballsiness" this team has lacked since the day he "retired".

Also, as I've said a couple times, we prevented Boston from acquiring him. Let's be honest, if Roger had replaced Tavarez, the Sox would far and away be the most dominant staff in the majors. It's not like they're weak to begin with.

Beyond that, we have to look at the postseason too. All the youth is wonderful in terms of season play, and the future. However, we all know the postseason is a totally different animal from the regular season. Having a guy who has proven he can be relied upon in October cannot be discounted.

And when the Yankees are prepared to throw money at guys like Giambi and Damon every year, you have to be happy as a fan of the team when they actually attempt to spend some on a quality arm for the rotation.

I honestly believe he's worth every penny. It's the whole picture, not the individual stats that bring me to that belief.

well, let's see him pitch in the playoffs. personally, I don't think we'll be seeing dominant appearances from him.

Ahh here comes Captain Junc to save the day with his Yankee whining. You guys have been unbearable for the last 11 years. Give it a rest. You deserve any ounce of shit you get because you earned it with your 96er arrogance. (i'm not talking to you directly but a large portion of Yankee ummm fans)

And for the record I ripped John fatass Kruk when he declared the Yankees dead in May. I knew this team would come back. Why because I said the better division is the AL Central and Cleveland, Detroit and Minnesotta would beat up each other the Yankees get to play the Baltimore and Tampa Bay who are by far the worst teams in baseball it makes a world of difference when you play them 19 times a year.

    That's interesting Rich.

    vs. TB: 9-7
    vs. Balt: 8-8
    vs. Clev: 6-0
    vs. Det: 4-4
    vs. Minn: 5-2
    vs. Sea: 5-5
    vs. Bos: 10-8

It's a good thing we swept the season series against Tampa Bay and Baltimore so we could slide against all the legit playoff teams.

    Oh, wait...

When you ahven't been playing In october in 2 years, haven't won a playoff game in 3 years, haven't won a div title in 12 years and have been in 1st all year long leading your rival at one point by 14 1/2 then yeah it's important and they want to win it and if anyone says otherwise they are either in denial or lying.

no he's nto and although beckett was great in 2003 he's not the big game pitcher schilling was and after beckett the Sox had some depth in '04, they don't now and the pen was alot better in '04 as well.

Please, they want this division and want it badly. nothing else is working so they are trying everything. The Sox and their fans badly want this division.

cut i out, it was a party on here for 3/4 of the season w/ all the yankee haters thinking the Yanks wouldn't make it to postseason and spcifically the Sox and Mets fans who thought they would cruise to div titles and are now both on the verge of colossal chokes.

I love it, now all of a sudden w/ the yanks hto and the Sox and Mets sliding everyone knew all along the yanks would make it and the Sox don't care anymore about the division.:breakdance:

Just to prove my point I did the research and since June 1 the Yankees are

6 wins 7 losses vs Baltimore
6 wins 4 losses vs TB

My point is withdrawn not exactly domination but they still have another series with both TB and Baltimore so I'd expect them to win 4 of those 6 games.

And junc you really are a whiner. As if the 4 WS in your lifetime aren't enough you need to cry about us Met and Red Sox fans giving you a hard time. You can do the research if you want but I not once said the Yankees were dead and in fact made sure I posted that multiple times. In fact I even recall when Clippard started against the Mets that it would be the start the jumpstarted your season and sure enough the wave of mediocrity ended the night.

Allow me to preface the following by saying that I can already tell you won't do anything but repeat yourself in response to this. You have proven time and again that you are either too stupid or too stubborn to accept being proven wrong, and I'm not going to waste too much time on you again. So say whatever you'd like in response, I'm not getting sucked into your bizzaro world of nonsense, lies, and make-believe "facts". After this my responses will be far less detailed.

There are exactly 8 players who have been on the Sox for 3 years or more- Wakefield, Timlin, Schilling, Varitek, Youkilis, Mirabelli, Manny, and Ortiz. Their manager has only been there 3 years. The GM has been there 5 years. The current ownership group has been there 5 years. So anything prior to that is beyond irrelevant. Now, in those 5 years (which include the current season) they have made the playoffs 3 (likely 4 after this year) times and won a World Series, coming within 5 outs of going to another. The current group isn't hurting for success.

Most of this is gibberish, but I think you're trying to tell me I'm wrong about Beckett in '07 being as good or better than Schilling in '04, and that the '04 team had more rotation depth. You are, as usual, incorrect.

    Beckett '07- 19-6, 3.20 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 8.59 K/9, 4.74 K/BB
    Schilling '04- 21-6, 3.21 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 8.06 K/9, 5.80 K/BB

Nearly identical. To say that Beckett has been worse this year than Schilling in '04 is just plain stupid. Also, Beckett has proven to be a big game pitcher. He shut you guys down the other day in a big game. He's also 3-0, 2.11 in the postseason. He's done nothing but impress in big games. And you miss a key point: Beckett isn't REPLACING the big game pitcher that is Curt Schilling. He's his own big game pitcher being ADDED to Curt Schilling. Schilling is still going to pitch in big games in October, but now so is Beckett.

As for overall rotation depth, here we go.

    Beckett '07- 19-6, 3.20 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 8.59 K/9, 4.74 K/BB
    Schilling '04- 21-6, 3.21 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 8.06 K/9, 5.80 K/BB

    Schilling '07- 8-8, 3.97 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 5.90 K/9, 4.13 K/BB
    Pedro '04- 16-9, 3.70 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 9.41 K/9, 3.72 K/BB

    Matsuzaka '07- 14-12, 4.41 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 8.81 K/9, 2.48 K/BB
    Lowe '04- 14-12, 5.42 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, 5.17 K/9, 1.48 K/BB

As I've said, Beckett this year is as good as Schilling in '04, and you ALWAYS say Pedro isn't a big game pitcher and Schilling is, so starter #2 shouldn't be a problem. Schilling has also been better than his season numbers since returning from the DL in August. Lowe was horrid in '04 during the regular season but came up big in the playoffs. That's the key here, is how Matsuzaka performs in October, but he also has a reputation as a big game pitcher that goes back to when he was in high school, extends through another professional league, and into international play. He also pitched pretty well against the Yankees in a big game last weekend.

I already posted the numbers about the bullpen. In '04 they had a 3.92 ERA, this year it's 3.20. So to say they had a better bullpen in '04 is again, just plain stupid.

How am I a whiner? I couldn't care less about your jealousies of the Yankees. I am not on here making fun of you guys the way you guys did when we were awful. I worry about the yanks never about the mets. I have to worry about the Sox b/c they are in our division but I don't obsess over them the way jealous anti-yankee fans obsess on the Yanks.

What has happened here was a jealous Yaakee hater whining about yankee fans and all I did was point out how bad you guys were earlier in the season and how cocky you were but I'm whining?
