The defense sucks. The defensive coaching sucks. The offense has potential though. If they can figure out how to hike the ball and and strategize against the blitz, they'll be alright. I don't understand why they keep doing the same thing against the blitz. Also, the refereeing was horrendous! What a joke. I don't remember the refs being this bad when I watched the NFL as a kid. It seems the refs decide way too many games.
I can see with Fields hasn’t worked out in the league thus far. He holds onto the ball too long.Panic sets in almost immediately, and he start looking for a running lane. His processing speed and trust in his reads seem tied to his comfort level. If that first option isn’t there right away, his internal clock starts racing and he bails out before the play has a chance to develop.
The fact is, I loved Aaron Glenn as Jet and the idea of him coming here and being the savior to salvage this dumpster fire was intoxicating. But we constantly make the same mistake. We go with the hot shot coordinator, more often than not a defensive guy in an offensive league and it ends badly. And again, I love Glenn, but his defenses weren't off the charts good over the past several years.
I felt the same way. He was one of my favorite players back in the day. He was probably the Jets' all time best corner before Revis. Hell, what I wouldn't give to make Glenn and Revis young again and make them our starting corners! But if he can't coach the team, unfortunately, old loyalties can't override that. I don't think the problem is that we're picking hot shot coordinators. Literally EVERY team does that. I know that most of the fanbase wants to hire someone with prior HC experience, but the truth is, that doesn't usually work much better; actually, it seems like more often than not, retread head coaches seem to do worse with their second team. Right now, most of the successful teams in the league are coached by guys on their first head coaching job, so I don't think us hiring coordinators without prior HC experience is the problem. The problem is that they haven't found a coach with the right balance of traits. I think the best way to put it is that he needs to run the team in its entirety; he needs to have a balance between delegating and micromanaging, and has to know the entire spectrum of the game. It's not about being an offensive or defensive guru, or being a player's coach or a disciplinarian. A good coach literally needs to be all of the above AND he has to have the right personnel on the field to put his orders into action. Needless to say, it's extremely hard to find such a coach. So, at this point, I don't know. I'm lost as to what they need to do.
Hard to know but for a start, I’d stay away from rookie DC’s anymore…we’ve just been down this road for WAY too long. This is an offensive league. And a passing one at that. You need to find a coach that understands offense and has a chance of developing a QB. Rookie DC’s are not the best option for that…not that it can’t happen…the Houston coach did it with Stroud, but for the most part, an offensive guy is a better bet.
I’m still team AG. I’m OK with him learning on the job as long as he’s learning. Dan Campbell started 0-10 I believe. Aside from to sometimes overly conservative nature of the offense, I’ve been somewhat encouraged by Tanner. Steve Wilks, however, needs to be fired yesterday.
Through four games... Jets have fumbled 8 times and recovered 3. Opponents have fumbled 6 times and recovered all 6.
With JJ down the jets only have McDonald worth a damn off the EDGE. The rest can’t set the EDGE nor rush the passer Q and Phillips are fine but the rest of the interior struggles. LB, Sherwood is there and he’s questionable with UDFA’s and guys off the street playing LB. Secondary was playing with Adam’s and Cisco for most of the game with Stephens (thought he was OK tonight). MC2 got hurt. We have to see the new kid from Tennessee and Thomas in there with Stephens playing S…he seems to play better in zone coming up to make plays but what do I know lol. It’s just a lack of talent in key areas right now.
Some of our mistakes in this game were just baffling. Isaiah Williams chooses to field the second-half kickoff, which is heading out of bounds. That would have put us on the 40-yard line. Instead he returns the ball and fumbles. Williams, remember, was brought in after the Jets cut Xavier Gipson... for fumbling on a kick return. Then, in the fourth quarter, Williams calls for a fair catch on a punt inside the five-yard line instead of letting it bounce and, most likely, go into the end zone. Simpson's stupid personal foul, flopping on a player way after the play had ended. Lazard's pre-snap penalty - just one of many from a badly indisciplined team. And on top of that there was a shocking lack of effort on some plays. Tony Adams 'tackle' attempt on the Achane touchdown run was embarrassing. He just didn't try. It's not looking good for the Glenn regime. It is early, but we're seeing exactly the same boneheaded plays and poor effort that we have been watching for years now. Nothing has changed with the culture of this team. Yes, it takes time to turn a ship around, but they don't seem to have even nudged the rudder.
