A lot of what the OP says is true but remember where we came from in only a year. Losing Woody and Jenkins was huge and as usual Tannenbaum being as incompetent as he is thought we didn't need them. Coaching is a huge issue and it will be interesting to see what they do now.
i think we got way too cute this past offseason and it led us to have a shitty season. We thought we were a hot shot team that were automatic favorite for the sb. Maybe this shitty season will bring us back to reality. We have a lot of work to do this offseason.
Agreed. Reading Rex's book you realize what kind of coach that he is. This team will make the necessary moves and get rid of everyone that doesn't want to be here. Rex wants everyone to have his full attention and this team will be back.
this has been a turd of a season, i cant think of one where i have got to the end and been more down on the team - in past years i have always expected us to be a bit crap - after 09 and 10 I had hoped we could at least match the last couple of years (though looking back that was never likely) the problem we have is that if you do not have a good QB it almost does not matter what the rest of your team looks like and if you have a good qb it does not matter what the rest of your team looks like we have sanchez and he is not a good qb. at all. sadly good qbs rarely bcome available (an opportunity like brees is a once in a blue moon event) and so I do not know where the hell we go from here pretty much every aspect of our team is worse than it was the last two years, the OL is worse, the rb are worse, the receivers are worse the QB is worse, the coaching is worse, the defense is worse, the special teams are way worse - this is a team on the decline and we will likely view 8-8 as a good season next year
Rex will be putting a lot of blame on himself this offseason and he won't let this team play the way they did this season. I expect him to make things right for next season
This season feels so terrible because we, as a fanbase, were fooled by two things: Ryan's bluster and a little good fortune. The Jets in 2009 and 2010 weren't really as good a team as "one game from the Super Bowl" suggests (i.e. an elite team). They had quite a bit of luck that helped propel them to where they ended up. In 2009, it took a pretty impressive confluence of events to squeeze them into the playoffs (including the Colts essentially laying down) and 2010 featured a lot of close wins to not-so-great teams. If you win, you win, but those were games that could have gone either way against teams the Jets "should have" (if they were truly elite) beaten handily. I'm not saying they didn't deserve to be in the playoffs, but a sober look back reveals that they were a few bounces away from potentially not making the playoffs in 2009 and possibly not in 2010 either. That they won games once they got there IS a credit, but they very well could not have even been there to play those games. How would Ryan look today if he were coming off three seasons with one or zero playoff appearances? He could easily have had the same level of team and those results and instead of being merely a big talker with "results" and a bad season, he'd look like a completely empty talker. My view is that the Jets were a mediocre team this year and in 2009 (in 2009 they got the fortuitous end-of-season results to get them into the playoffs, this year they didn't) and a merely decent team in 2010. They have yet to be an elite team. Viewed through that prism, this season is not nearly as disastrous. It does throw a pall over how good we can expect the team to be going forward (borderline playoff contender, bleh) but this wasn't an "elite team crashing and burning." It was a mediocre team turning out one more mediocre season...this time, minus the luck (or Luck).
We may not have been a good team but in 09 we had a great D and a great running game. Last year we had an above average D and a top NFL running game. This year we had a mediocre D and a mediocre running game. Maybe instead of looking for Braylon Edwards we should be looking for some nasty run blockers for the OL and another durable back who can actually deliver hits over and over on a D and stay up. It might make sense to draft a safety with some size and range. I suspect we will spend the offseason looking for more targets for Sanchez and OL pass blocker rather than the things that made us a contender in the first place.
Only upside is that MAJOR changes will be made. No more standing pat thinking that we are an elite team on the verge of a championship.
Yep. The wind just blew the curtain aside and the Great Oz is going to have to work really hard to get it back in place.
I agree with most of what you say, though more targets for Sanchez isn't one of them. He's had more targets than previous Jets QB's have had. He's not comfortable in "the pocket" if one ever existed this year. Who can blame him after the beatings we've seen him endure this year. For a team loaded with Pro Bowl or Pro Bowl alternates on the O-Line, they obviously are the most overrated line in football.
my bet would be "well, that's another fine mess you've gotten me in to" before poking one another in the eye in true laurel and hardy style.
