For the most part, we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. I don't think Jets fans are hard enough on Rex. He traded up for two bad players. To some extent, yes there have been a lot of highly-ranked D players there when the Jets picks rolled around, but since Rex has had a lot of input into the draft and helped set up the team's value board, one can hardly say that it's just a matter of tough luck that the best players available were always defensive players. Pryor was not projected to be a top 15 pick by anyone I've seen. I'd like to know who made that projection. I was just reading today how Kiper, Mayock, and one other analyst had Pryor ranked. Kiper had him ranked slightly ahead of Clinton-Dix, while Mayock and the other analyst had Pryor ranked in the early 20s about 7-8 spots AFTER Clinton Dix, and I think even Kiper had Pryor ranked around 18-20.
I saw Pryor projected to go at 16 from multiple sites/draft "experts". I don't see the need to quibble about two or three spots in mock drafts anyway. Pryor was a good pick on paper and let's leave it at that. We will see what he will bring to the field soon enough.
I am not talking about Rex's overall drafting grade (not a big fan of that myself), I am just saying Sanchez/Green/Geno/Hill picks show that the Jets are willing to pick offense when they think it's a good value. From his draft profile at Nfl.com: http://www.nfl.com/draft/2014/profiles/calvin-pryor?id=2543469 " Draft Projection Round 1 (top 15)" But even aside from that, just from listening to people talk, both Clinton-Dix and Pryor were considered elite type players at their positions, whereas Cooks and Lee were considered 2nd tier.
Don't get me wrong. I like Pryor a LOT and do think he is one of the top safeties in the draft. I wouldn't have a problem at all with his being the #1 pick if the Jets had used more high picks on the offense over the last 5 years. I think anyone that considers Brandin Cooks a 2nd tier WR is nuts. He's gonna be a star in the NFL imo. I'm not a gambling man, but if I were, I'd bet the ranch on it. He would have been perfect for the Jets.
Kiper and Mayock and all these other so called analysts are total buffoons . I don't give a damn what they said. My favorite player was Shazier, some of you guys were arguing with me that taking him at 18 would be a reach, most mocks had him as a end of round first. well look he almost went top ten. y ou know which orgs listen to these so called expects? the Jaguars, now they have Gabbert 2.0 from a third overall.
As it turns out you were right on. Even though it did not happen, I read the Jets were trying very hard to trade up with Tampa for M . Lee. Good call
Nailed number 4. We could have gone 3 WR with our first 3 picks and then picked a CB in the fourth and there'd be morons spouting off how Rex still controls the draft.
